Some girls was such an attitude... When it first came out, everyone bought the tape, and wore it out in the car... Every song was such an attitude. Great reaction again.
I remember when this album came out. I was in seventh grade. I also love the Mick Taylor era. Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street are among my favorite albums.
The Stones probably at their rocking peak, this. Not their greatest tune, but just showing their range. Some Girls is up there with the best albums of all time.
“I guess back then you could pretty much say whatever you wanted.” You are correct and you’re only two songs in. There’s a few more of those on the way. 🤣 Favorite off this album: respectable
This was always my favorite song off this album, mainly because it was the closest in style to pre-disco era Stones. However, as the years passed and I got older, I began to appreciate all the other songs on this album more and more and really like a lot of them. Some Girls might be my favorite now, but Beast of Burden, Just My Imagination, and even the quirky Far Away Eyes are awesome.
In 78 I thought the Stones were ready to just stay with the same old same old . That LP had everything. Very defiant and fit with Punk movement and the "Miss you " was so popular they almost pushed the Bee gees off the charts. A full fueled LP connecting many genres . I wasn't huge into Country ,but " Far away eyes" hooked me on that too. Interesting you caught that Cowboy feel to this . Great review 👍👍😎❗
Biz, you gotta do "Time Waits For No One." It's fire! If you're ready to hear Keith (Richards, guitarist) sing some dirty lyrics, do "Little T&A." Another great song with Keith singing is "Before They Make Me Run." Whatever you do, don't listen to "Star, Star!" We went to see The Stones live whenever we could!
I think Keef is a very underrated vocalist. Another favourite of mine is You Got The Silver, and also Sleep Tonight. An excellent harmonising backing vocalist too, essential to The Stones sound. A favourite performance of mine is the 1972 live version of Happy, with Keef and Mick sharing a mic.
Punk and Disco were really trending in the late 1970s so the Stones incorporated some elements for this album. This tune was clearly inspired by Punk Rock with it's simple and stripped down arranngement and the raw attitude of the music and delivery. One of my favorite tunes from them that sounds great when played live.
Hey Biz! I love that you are doing this album, it's the album that got me into The Stones, not a bum track on it. My fave is probably 'Before They Make Me Run'. 'Far Away Eyes' is also a favorite
I love their cover version of …..just my imagination by the Temptations! Always liked that one the best on this album. Of course all the other tracks were so totally The Glimmer Twins gems. But taking another bands song and trying to do it in their own way takes guts. Stones have the guts to pull off a great cover version.
One of my all time fave song lyrics(esp that I can relate to). "I'm filling a need, and I'm filling a hole. My mom is so glad, I'm not on the dole". Nuff said.
A very solid Stones album, we wore it out in high school and it got a ton of radio play...On a side note I once heard an DJ talk about interviewing Charlie Watts in the 70s and finding it hard to focus on the subject matter due to the fact Charlie's skin had a "green tone" from heroin use😮
"Beast of Burden" my fave from the album. "When the Whip Comes Down" is to me about a dude who leaves home early to be a street rat, selling sex, and who's ruled by the dictates of a tough street life. it's almost a companion piece to their controversial song, "Cocksucker Blues."
This is a really great album. Miss You how they play it live now with an excellent funky bass break is superb. Beast of Burden is another classic song. Absolutely no filler tracks here. We have rock, disco, blues, soul, punk ,country and western all delivered in style. It was nominated for a Grammy and deservedly so. Thank You Jesus. Thank You Lord.
Y’all gotta listen to the 10 outtake tracks on the anniversary re-release they put out a while back. Those previously unreleased tracks are one of the best Stones albums every fir real if you like blues and ir country
53rd Street was apparently where gay prostitutes would hang out waiting to be picked up to turn tricks. So, you can imagine what “spiting” on his face actually means here. The next track is a cover of the Temptations’ number one hit “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)”. It is one of their greatest covers ever. Jagger adds lyrics to fit the New York City theme.
🎼Maybe I will become a playboy 🎶 hanging out in gay bars🎶 & move to the Westside of town🎶 you hit it on the nail Armando & ppl that grew up in NY didn't know that🤔
Check out 'Far Away Eyes' or 'Respectable'. Really the whole album is good. It's the most "radio friendly" album that The Stones put out. Their best album as far as just being a bad ass album is 'Exile On Main St.' The Stones partied harder than any other band in history. They make Motley Crue, Poison, and all those hair metal bands look like Christian bluegrass music or some shit. None of those groups would have been able to hang with The Stones.
Some of my favorite songs on this album are,. “Shattered”, “Beast of Burden”, “Before They Make Me Run”, “Respectable”, “Some Girls”, and of course their country song “Far Away Eyes”, do one do them all.
I strongly recommend checking out the 1978 live version from their Fort Worth, Texas performance . The energy and tempo of the live version blows the studio one out of the water.
Funny you should mention 'when the shit hits the fan', because another of my favorite bands, Little Feat, has a song actually called "When The Shit Hits The Fan", though it is usually shortend to just "The Fan", on most album covers. But it is a cool song none the less. Maybe once you are done with Some Girls you might enjoy that one from Feat. Patiently waiting for "The Girl With The Far Away Eyes". Just got home right now from seeing Alice Cooper, the King of Shock Rock, live in my home town. 70+ years old and still sounding great. Unbelievable.
Alright Biz...my favorite track on some girls is beast of burden. Miss you is close behind. BUT...your going to hear some masterpieces! Far away eyes, respectable, and before they make me run, are awesome. You need to know, Ron Wood does the vocals for before they make me run. Anyway...it ends with a helluva bang with shattered the last track!
@@67stickyfingers the funny thing is I knew kr sang this, but I had been listening to rw 7more days and had him on my mind and was so anxious to recommend the other songs on some girls that my mouth spoke before my brain was in gear!
@@67stickyfingers I am so glad I got to see them in concert. I got stoned at the dome! Grew up in detroit and did 37 concerts in the 70s. Pontiac silverdome was where 1 seen them. The only show i never got to see was zeppelin. I had sent $ for tickets 1980 joe louis then bonham died. I was heartbroken. Especially when I got a refund instead of tickets though I would never use them.
"When the Whip Comes Down" seems more a nod to Punk Rock than Southern Rock to me. The Rolling Stones were never politically correct. If you check the lyrics again and read between the lines, the protagonist is a gay hustler working truck drivers at the East River docks. Still provocative. Funny thing about forbidden words, when I was a kid in the seventies it was f-bombs, but from what I've read of linguistic studies done on them, today it's n-bombs and other racially derogatory slurs. As for my favorite song on that album, it's "Beast of Burden". The guitar work on that is super sweet!
Only tracks 4, 5, and 8 are what I'd call obscure. All of the other tracks had a lot of airplay back in the day. "Far Away Eyes" will make you go "WTF?"... look up Buck Owens and "The Bakersfield Sound" to understand the origins on that one... 🤔
Yeah, say what ever you want. Why not we all do.....and if you disagree you're a liar. You may get punched in the face but that's the consequences. But today's thin skinned soy boys would never understand the world a lot of us grew up in.

Southern Rock????? Huh??? I don't think you really know what that is. This is raw, stripped-down pseudo punk. "Some Girls" started this phase in 1978. Nothing epitomizes that phase more than this song. And no, "When the Whip Comes Down" is a sado masochism reference.
Back then you could write any songs you liked cause the soy didn't flow like today and everyone and their brother didn't get their wittle feewings butt hurt over every little thing.
My favorite Stones Album. Dirty, raw, nasty, just incredible. Whip's my favorite track
My favorite Watts drumming, which means top five favorite drumming songs ever.
Great album, great song by the greatest rock n roll band that ever existed.
Some girls was such an attitude... When it first came out, everyone bought the tape, and wore it out in the car... Every song was such an attitude. Great reaction again.
Favourite from this album, probably "Shattered". Shadoobie.
Yes. Shadoobie.
What say?
I remember when this album came out. I was in seventh grade. I also love the Mick Taylor era. Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street are among my favorite albums.
So much of this album gives you the grit and dirt that was NYC in the 1970s. That said, this album still holds its own today.
Before They Make me Run is my favorite song off this album. You can hear Keith Richards sing the lead for a change ✌
All álbum man....
I also love the work of Ron Wood on this song as well as the album.
The Stones probably at their rocking peak, this. Not their greatest tune, but just showing their range. Some Girls is up there with the best albums of all time.

great album. "explicit" ? more to come.....
FAR AWAY EYES \m/ \m/
Before They Make Me Run and Shattered are my favorites. The lyrics and the groove make it for me!
I believe this song is about a street hustler....I always this was a real rock and roll tune.
Jagger said so much once about this song. Much of that in the 1970s as true today. No doubt it’s about street hustling!
Their best album in the Ronnie Wood era!
I loved that we got a chord change for the guitar solo.
Great reaction! Excited to hear the rest of your reactions from this album!

Wow. I never realized that reference, even though I vaguely knew about the area.
