Yes it is. Howlin’ Wolf’s “Commit a Crime” gives me chills, and Clapton picks up Richards’ Gibson on “Everyone Knows About My Good Thing”. But the whole album is great.
The Black and Blue is underrated. The lead solo on Hand of Fate is Wayne Perkins. A beautiful clean lead reminiscent of folks like Don Felder from the Eagles. Jagger’s gritty voice is classic on this cut with the usual Richards rhythm licks. Hey Negrita and Hot Stuff shows off their funk persuasion.
@daleclark7127 - I agree 100% that B&B is a very underrated album. I rediscovered my love for it recently and added Hand of Fate, Hey Negrita and Crazy Mama to my playlist. (Stones have been my favorite band since I was 9 years old - I’ll be 61 in a couple months 🤘)
The Glimmer Twins. Mick and Keith, were on a cruise ship. An older couple came up to them, saying, “You look familiar, who are you?” Jagger and Richards, very amused by the question, laughed but refused to give her an answer. The lady said, “Oh, come on then, just give us a glimmer?” And the Glimmer Twins were created.
I think it's a great Stones album - very funky, some reggae influence coming through too. Critical opinion sometimes gets it really wrong, like on Macca's first few albums - I'd always heard how rubblish they were...until I had a chance to hear them for myself!
So many great Stones songs Lee! A similar vibe to this is found with "All Down The Line". A deep cut from arguably the Stones greatest album, Exile on Main Street.
What are you talking about ….. “Wiki” this whole album is GOLD !!!! Every track ! No Lie (1976) true Stone’s fans would agree 🎸 Hot Stuff is track 1 Memory Hotel is track 4 Fool To Cry is track 7 ……tucked in neatly between “It’s Only Rock’ n Roll (1974) & “Some Girls” ((1978) ❤️
Glad you liked it Lee. I agree, that was a seriously good Jagger vocal and I guess you could argue that with the Stones putting down a tight rhythm, it didnt matter much who was playing lead.
ppl didn't like Black and Blue when it came out, but it's more than stood the test of time. Not considered a classic stones cut, but would be the top song in most bands discography. shows how great the stones are
That dirty, deep rhythm riff and fill is another Richards signature that he continued to use throughout the rest of their catalog. I like The Stones deep cuts as much as I like their singles, in some cases even more. Winter is great deep cut from Goats Head Soup album.
He had quit the band over a year prior to Black and Blue. No Mick Taylor on here. Ron Wood filled in for their 1975 American tour and would officially join the Stones in 1976 when the Faces broke up. He's here but not on a full-time basis nor does he handle the solos. This album had lead guitar guests that were in a way auditioning but neither Wayne Perkins (who does the solo here and on "Fool To Cry" plus one of the better ones on any Stones LP with his solo on "Worried About You" which was shelved until Tattoo You in 1981) and Harvey Mandel (who solos on "Hot Stuff" and "Memory Motel").
Only the Stones, who are notoriously cheap, would invite a man to try out for the lead guitar position and then record and sell the tryout! It works, though, and this album, though there is some stuff I’d skip, is underrated. The most impressive thing is that their run of easy greatness where they could do no wrong is over, people are sick of them, they’re tired, worn-out, trying to kick addictions, various police departments are investigating them, their lead guitarist quits, and still they manage to put together this album. The last song, “Crazy Mama”, I also love, and “Hot Stuff” is a pure funk groove that they occasionally get back to. As far as I know, the three people who’ve recorded with both the Beatles and Stones are Eric Clapton, Nicky Hopkins, and Billy Preston, who’s all over this album and came up with the walking bass line on “Miss You”, the star single from the next album, the wonderful ’Some Girls’.
Black and Blue used to be quite dismissed but these days it's getting a more fair treatment in general (just like The Who's By Numbers another mid 70s record by a classic band). I think it's a very interesting, different album, quite funky and with some cool rockers and ballads. So, quite balanced, more focused than It's Only RNR.
Actually, Wikipedia is pretty forgetful… That’s a pretty good album one that I don’t hear often is the song Hayden Negrita would really to me anyway has that reggae twist in it?
Funny, one of the biggest hits from this album was Hot Stuff. Personally, my least favorite song from the album. Loved the rest of the album, was part of my high school years soundtrack! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did then...
Yeah, not the greatest Stones album, imo. But it's the Stones so even on their worst album, their going to have a couple of great spngs & Hand Of Fate is one of them, great song. Other stand outs are Memory Hotel & A Fool To Cry. Lee, check out Wild Horses from the Sticky Fingers album. It's another ballad, but it's my favorite Stones song. Just a great song on a fantastic album.
Only the Stones would invite guitarists to a tryout, tape the tryout, and sell it. Pretty hilarious really.
BLACK & BLUE is one of my FAVE Stones' Albums!!!!
I Can't believe someone reacted to this song..i love it ❤❤😊😊
Finally! I've been waiting for at least one reactor to do this song. This is a hidden gem in their entire repertoire.
Classic Keith Richards open G guitar tuning masterpiece!!
Thx for sharing
You feel that guitar and it makes you happy!!😎😎😎😎
last year they came out with "Blue and Lonesome"- an overlooked blues album. Mick's voice at his age just kills.
A truly astonishing record.
Yes it is. Howlin’ Wolf’s “Commit a Crime” gives me chills, and Clapton picks up Richards’ Gibson on “Everyone Knows About My Good Thing”. But the whole album is great.

B&B is my favourite Stones Album, it has a great ‘tone’ for want of a better word.

My favorite Stones tune is Shattered! Also love Little T&A, Waiting on a Friend, Play with Fire, Can You Hear the Music.... Soooo many great songs!
I’ve always loved Mick’s shoutout, towards the end, to “Charlie Boy”, a long time term of endearment for Charlie Watts.
I've always found that when I sit and listen to any of the Stones's "lackluster" albums, I end up thinking "How is THIS considered lackluster?"
I have no idea. This was really good. And it’s a deep cut of a deep cut. They were that good!
I think it's a great Stones album - very funky, some reggae influence coming through too. Critical opinion sometimes gets it really wrong, like on Macca's first few albums - I'd always heard how rubblish they were...until I had a chance to hear them for myself!
that black and blue record kicks major booty- start to finish.
So many great Stones songs Lee! A similar vibe to this is found with "All Down The Line". A deep cut from arguably the Stones greatest album, Exile on Main Street.
I can't believe there's a Stones tune I haven't heard ... be here we are. Nice one.
Amazing guitars and vocals, perfect drum and bass ❤
B&B is uneven as they say, but when it’s good, it’s timeless.
What are you talking about ….. “Wiki” this whole album is GOLD !!!! Every track ! No Lie
(1976) true Stone’s fans would agree 🎸 Hot Stuff is track 1
Memory Hotel is track 4
Fool To Cry is track 7

Great song from a great underrated album ❤
You are correct The glimmer twins were Mick and Kieth
Glad you liked it Lee. I agree, that was a seriously good Jagger vocal and I guess you could argue that with the Stones putting down a tight rhythm, it didnt matter much who was playing lead.
Ron Wood joined the band during this album and Ron brought a song with him that he didn't receive writing credit for called Hey Negrita
ppl didn't like Black and Blue when it came out, but it's more than stood the test of time. Not considered a classic stones cut, but would be the top song in most bands discography. shows how great the stones are

Winter is the hidden gem of GHS
The billboard for the album was great!
Yes; they would never get away with it today, sad to say.
Plenty of great tunes! “Melody” is a great tune, especially for reactions.
Nice Stones tune that I’ve not heard. Loved the guitar work on it. Thanks Michael K and Lee. Did you say Howie Mandel? 🤣
I love the Black & Blue album.
I'm not a big Stones fan, but this track kicks ass. I actually love this album, very funky!
This is the first album that Ron Wood was on with them...but boy do I love Mic Taylor's playing.
One of top 3 Stones songs.
One of the greatest guitar solos ever, by Wayne Perkins.
They really should've gone with Wayne Perkins. What could've been!
Hell Ya !!!!! The whole album is great!!! Rock on dude.
Great Album, Hey Negrita is a great track from it.
Mick Taylor (Before Ronnie Woods time) was playing lead guitar. Keith is a Rhythm guy most of the time. These guys were so good.
He had quit the band over a year prior to Black and Blue. No Mick Taylor on here. Ron Wood filled in for their 1975 American tour and would officially join the Stones in 1976 when the Faces broke up. Always like this one, nice groove
Hot Stuff and Hey Negrita are both great tracks, and very funky.
Imo, this is the best mixed album they ever did. That is Wayne Perkins doing the guitar solo.
Best song on the album IMO
Please listen to "Hey Negrita" from the same album: great reagge/funky groove, great vocals and dirty lyrics!

Black & Blue is a great album! Love Crazy Mama and Negrita! Play the video for "ANGRY"!

The best on the album : HOT STUFF 👌
Gotta do Sway next.
Old Stones fans don't consider them "deep cuts".
Sway is definitely in the top 3.
I finally got to see them play it in Austin 2005. Mick Taylor wasn’t there, but…
Black and Blue is a great album,
I think you'd like; Let it Loose, or Loving Cup.
My guess has always been that Ronnie does the main solo. So good. Almost Mick worthy.
I always thought it was a decent record- some hidden gems on it
It’s the Stones. It’s got to be good.
This is an excellent album. Perkin's solos on this track are superb. Wikipedia don't know shit.
Wayne Perkins does a .Best song ofstones.
Crazy mama rocks great album a must have
I hate to have to make some stupid comparison just to piss everybody off for a response, but I like Black and Blue better than Some Girls.
I don’t, but I like “Crazy Mama” and “Hand Of Fate” better than “When The Whip Comes Down”.
It’s a close call but you might be right.
Wiki...WTF. Not their best album but a good album. "Crazy Mama" is another great rock n' roll track from this record.
Actually, Wikipedia is pretty forgetful… That’s a pretty good album one that I don’t hear often is the song Hayden Negrita would really to me anyway has that reggae twist in it?
Beggars banquet

The rumor was they bought it from Gram Parsons for $50,000, but I can’t see them paying that much for anything.
Hey Negrita from the same album!!!!
I’ve always loved Mick’s shoutout, towards the end, to “Charlie Boy”, a long time term of endearment for Charlie Watts.
