The 224 was very smooth running. I remember my dad's passenger set with the green cars he bought as a kid and brought out every Christmas for under the tree. It was also a good ozone maker which smelled terrific mixed with the scent of the tree. Great memories!

Great seeing postwar There's nothing like them. They're wonderfully crafted engines and cars

It is a great running locomotive. Whoever had that set kept it in great condition. That is not something that you see all that much. Thanks for sharing the history of the set and posting.

It was well cared for and then stored away for a while. A little dirty and some surface rust on the wheels, but it cleared up great. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Super! That dump car looks like brand new. Probably never had coal in it. Nice job.

It might have had coal once when new, but obviously not used much since. It is a very clean set, but unfortunately no boxes.

I am fortunate enough to have a prewar 224. Wish it was a 224E. It seems to short out after running for about 5 or 10 minutes. Any ideas?

@@ronalddevine9587It is a difficult thing to diagnose remotely. The fact that it runs for a while and then shorts out is odd. Is it the transformer that cuts out (red light) or the engine first? My old 254 had two shorts in different areas, but it was an immediate short where it would not run. My 224 ran when I first got it, but it was a little sluggish with a dirty motor. The tender motor did not run because the motor brushes were gummed up and stuck in the brush tubes. It is possible for a motor to be gummed up to the point where the resistance can cause a small transformer to trip the breaker over a little time. Has the engine been serviced lately? My 224 did require a new lamp wire because of exposed wire. Let me know a little more and see if we can work through it.

What did you clean the surfaces with? They look fantastic!

That is one of my secrets... Lol. The plastic shells typically are washed and very gently scrubbed with a "soft" toothbrush using dawn liquid soap and then rinsed. I don't scrub over decals. I then apply a little Vaseline using soft paper towels and Q-tips for corners and then wipe dry with a soft microfiber cloth. It leaves a nice finish. The engine and dump car I don't use the dawn or water. I sometimes use Endust first to get some of the dust and dirt off, followed by the same Vaseline trick. But the cars were in nice shape to begin with.
