This is brilliant Joe, oh to be young again! Three of us relatively untrained 70 year olds, with my wife as support crew in our white Ssangyong Rexton, rode from Bluff to Nelson starting 25 Feb, having no idea about the Sounds to Sounds. Our route took us up the Hakataramea and then over the McKenzie Pass on 3 March, and I reckon we passed you grinding up near the summit around 1.30-2pm, and you looked like you were totally cooking in the heat. We came across bike packers following you at various random points on our trip north, including Rockford Road near Fairlie, Geraldine, Ram Paddock Road heading to the Hurunui, Hawarden and Hamner, all badass and in good spirits, a lot of women and older folk. All very inspiring, congratulations mate!
@@joe.nation Will be doing some of this route in the next few weeks so watched again. Great music choice & nice terse storytelling style :) Good luck with 2024 & congrats on the brilliant TTW finish.
Thanks mate!! Yeh the gut is definitely the hardest part of this sport. This is the first ride that it hasn’t been a factor for me… potentially the lowered intensity but also added as many fats to the diet as possible instead of just sugary carbs. Easier said than done though. Pretty personal thing i think
I live in Blenheim and can't get my head around Ship Cove to Hanmer in one leg. Respect! Bloody good effort.
You're both so hard core and fit! It's my dream to bike pack New Zealand but not in a rush. I love gravel bikes! 😊

What a way to see our country!
Congratulations on another stout ride 💪
I remember your name from early DH races, sick. You're an absolute mad man still, but for a different type of riding
The scenery and terrain makes that an epic one
What a ride… awesome. Is there anyway I can get hold of the GPX file…. Are in planning mode for a NZ visit.. escaping the Danish winter
I was on the same ferry as you, but I never saw you again. Took me almost 3 days to get to Wards Pass😂. A fantastic effort, well done.
So impressive - thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks mate!

I just finished but took twice the time you did! Not sure my footage or editing will be as good as yours 👌🏼 Thanks for posting 🤘🏼
Love your work!!
Rufus IS the spirit of gravel!
Good vid, thanks for the effort. Very great full.
What a beautiful country we live in :)
Oh man. I'm itching to get out there (and take a bit more time). Great vid.
I think it’s worth comparing that this man is riding the same distances in a day that most people drive 😂 mad dog
Even a cameo from Steve! How good
Awesome efforts in a day 🥳🥳😯...What bike is your mate riding...looks v cool 🤔
Bloody impressive ride... once again. Which Garmin are you using?
Thanks mate, edge 530
Rofus where did get those bike shorts
Mate...when you doing the Tour Divide? Your a natural for that route? And you'd post a quality time...
Thanks mate, giving it a try in 3 months time actually!! Hoping to film too
Good effort!
Awesome ride well done. What brand is your rain jacket?
Well done mate! How do you keep the gut intact after all that sugary processed food for 5 days? How many calories burnt in total? #maddog

would gravel tires be fine on double fence line? thanks
yeh there are some rocky bits which would be smarter to walk with low volume gravel tyres, to avoid puncturing, but it's doable, just not ideal
How da fuk can anyone cycle 300km a day!? That's insane. Respect. I hope Rufus is doing fine.
