Great demonstration by cutting away the part of the block showing how the balance shaft can be out of time! I’m looking to reseal the leaky head cover on my mk7 gti and I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole regarding timing and whatnot with these ea888 engines. Great videos, thank for the help!
It's a 7:1 ratio, you do not have to remove the gear to align it properly, just take the chain off and spin that gear set until it's on the timing mark. Great video and love that you cut the block to show the internals 🤘
It's actually an 7:8 ratio. 21 teeth on one and 24 on the other. Anyway I think it's bad advice for people who don't have experience timing an interference engine to "just take the chain off" and start spinning things. Yes, you can spin the balance shafts. But turn the crank or cams without the chain and you'll have pistons bending valves. Additionally, you have to know where the gear driven (lower) balance shaft needs to be when piston 1 is at TDC.
I think everyone who has worked on one of these engines really appreciates the part of the video where you start hammering on the engine, th-cam.com/video/zW9tJr_g3RE/w-d-xo.html. That's really cathartic...
Hey there we are a shop and we are having trouble with this 2013 Audi Q7 premium plus 3.0 gas supercharge. We did a timing job cuz of chain slap. After we put everything back together we still had DTC p0018 camshaft position bank 2 sensor A correlation code. We double checked the timing by turning it over and making sure all the dots lined up correctly and they do. We put a new camshaft phaser bank 2 and code still persists. We checked the wiring on both camshaft sensors and vvt solenoids and all check out good. We ohm out camshaft position sensors and vvt solenoids also. We swapped the camshaft position sensors and the code did not follow the sensor. We swapped vvt solenoids and the code did not follow to the other side. If there is anything you can add to what we've done or something to look for would be amazing. Thank you if you can
Great video bro. However, as a VW GTI mk6 owner, I will express my thoughts and experiences with those engines. Stay away!!!! Just stay away!!! It’s a money pit guys.
Have you ran into the issue where the upper guide lengths are different? I have three blocks, and two have the short guide, and one is longer. How do I order for the right guide length. Normally, I just reuse the guide, but I through away one of them for one of my short blocks. Great info on the timing of the balance shaft, by the way! Thanks!!
Hey naptown! I’m back hoping to get some more insight on that other balance shaft. I pulled it out and after reinstalling it I’m having trouble getting it to spin. My timing chain moves fine but my balance shaft chain is stuck
By the look of your videos your are a bwa engine pro so I would like to ask you how to check the chain stretch on live obd data what to look for and take it to consideration please.

I can't see it anywhere any ideas on where to look? could it have made its way to the sump? otherwise I ll just need to reassemble and hope for the best argh help.
Hey man i think the mechanic that installed new chains made this mistake. If you mess up the time on the balance circuit the motor wont throw codes but it will feel like an electric razor buzzin the pedals and the shifter. My engine vibes at 2100-3500 in a strange buzzing way super high frequency and vibrates change in the cupholders. The only way to restore the engines smoothness is to take that relay sprocket off and start completely over again?
How often do you replace these balance shafts? Do they go bad? Mine happens to be a 2010 a4. I need timing. But im wondering if i should do the balance shafts as well.
Great video. I have a question. I replaced the balanced shaft and everything works perfect, but it is leaking oil where the balance shaft and the water pump gear screws. Any idea what i could have done wrong?
Can I ask a question im regbuilding my cczb engine re using the old balance shafts but the spur gear on the inlet side is meant to replaced due to back lash limits as new ones are coated. Do you replace? I can set back lash by moving it slightly but whats a good setting ive got it a 0.2mm has slight play..just seems stupid to replace for back lash if you can set it.any help welcomed
do I need to get new guides every time the chain stretches a bit? it makes sense for broken timing components but has anyone actually measured the wear on those things?
Great video!!!my balance shaft got stuck car doesn’t turn on changing it will fix it or you think damage was done to valves or something els chain didn’t break
@angel Rodriguez yes , if the balance shaft seized then the motor choked on the valves because the chain drive system is dependent on the balance shaft being able to move freely. You most likely bent valves and now have no compression. New head time!
Are the timing chain kits for a 13 cmpa the same as a 2010 caeb kit? Can’t find any kits local for the cmpa but I when I look up one for the caeb there a few options . Swapping cmpa into 10 a4 that had a caeb in it before
When you line up the balance shaft chain with the T30's, will you be at TDC at the same time? I'm wondering whether to line up theses dots at the same time as lining up the main timing chain at TDC before removing it
@@Miketheknight98 I'm struggling to remember now as I did the job weeks ago. I think I turned the two balance shafts until the dots lined up with the marks on the new chain. The important thing is that the main chain and sprockets are never moved from TDC during the chain replacement.

Is there a trick to installing the balance shaft on the exhaust side? I’m having a pretty hard time, as when I try it’s crazy snug. When it’s all the way in flush, the gear doesn’t spin, at least not easy. I snapped off the hinge for the bolt off the original, by trying to work it out. Lesson learned, or so I thought… ordered a replacement, and tried to use the bolt to ease it back in, and snapped that one off. So now waiting on the second replacement, and won’t attempt, until I get another game plan. I’ve heard of people saying if you put it in the freezer, it’ll allow for an easier fit. Any truth to that?
I understand what you’re saying but it’s not correct. The VW repair manual doesn’t mention any of it either. The two balance shafts rotate together so their weights have to be rotating together where you put the weight doesn’t matter. As long as the dot on the inlet balance shaft sits in between the two dots on the sprocket and the copper links are on the dots on both balance shafts, those balance shafts will then be working in perfect harmony with each other. If what you said was correct then everytime you turned the engine off you would have to turn it off so that the weight on the balance shaft is downwards, which makes no sense. Bottom line is: if it’s all in time, it will rotate in perfect harmony with no vibration.
But to check the timing of the relay shaft/intake balance shaft, some people do actually remove it (and replace the bolt and o-ring) to 100% know that it's in time.
hey whats up man had a quick question for you , have a 2010 a4 s line and found a set of Kolbenschmidt pistons/rings , would you say theyre decent enough to throw in the car along with som eoem gaskets/chain etc ? also cant seem to get a straight answer for what sized wrist pins id have 21mm, 23mm? thanks in advance!
He has addressed the wrist pin size in one of his previous videos. I don’t think he is an advocate of aftermarket parts. I refreshed my 2.0T from the knowledge i gathered from his videos. What I did with the piston rings was just clean them with a brass brush. My car has over 3000 miles since and no issues.
@@grnbean379 I’ll look for the video regarding that. I will be getting new pistons / rings rather than just cleaning them up since the old design sucks ass and will basically be a somewhat temporary fix

@@NaptownTuner Now you have me worried! Just did this job at the weekend. I'm very familiar with TDI belts but this was the first chain I've done. I do remember checking that the dots lined up as in Humble Mechanic's excellent chain timing video but must have just got lucky on a 1 in 8 chance... I certianly didn't rotate a few times to line them up. Engine runs sweet so fingers crossed all is good!
No need to pull the gear, just rotate the shafts till the single upper dot is in the lower double dot on the bottom inside gear.....don't disassemble in the first place
Check that the back side of the pulley and the crank gear to verify either isn't rounded out, and make absolutely sure that it fits securely on the engine. If you're unsure, take it off and try again.
I find this funny. Just follow the normal procedure for chains on a ccta and put everything at tdc, when you re time the motor your using the colored links on the chain. You're making it wayyy more difficult than ot actually is.
