If a 3000gt is the hardest timing job you haven't done many bmw or audis. I have a vr4 and it was way easier then this. I also did a timing job on a v10 bmw so maybe I'm just using that as a comparison lmao
@@nicholasbrown6481 I've got the kit for the 1.4 litre VW engine, & it will do others. I agree on buying the right tools, like he used in this video. The kit I got cost me $400!! The kit is worth having. We most likely have seen lots of easy to do jobs ruined by lack of suitable tools.
This upload came at perfect timing, just had a 2011 A5 come into work with a timing failure and no compression. My buddy did timing on one of these a few months back, they way he described it sounded very scary/complex lol this video makes it feel quite easy! Won’t be scared to do my MK7 GTI timing once it’s needed! Thanks Charles!
Charles is absolutely right about taking your time and following the shop manual. Set the beer aside for later. Be rested and alert. Do it in stages if you can. Tearing it down only took me a few hours. Then I stopped and read about it again and again. As it is I did a full timing set on my B8 A4 as "maintenance" last fall before the old tensioner coughed. Guides, bolts, chains, balance shafts, gears, cover, timing bridge. Yes I plan to keep the car. It's not really a hard job but you need to be alert. If you lose timing or forget to torque something down bad things can happen in a hurry. And the fact that the timing marks don't line up after rotating the engine one or two revolutions threw me until I read about it. An Audi engineering paper stated something like 164 revolutions. Crazy. I bet you I checked those marks 10x :). Good luck!
Hey buddy Wow that is such great advice, as I am trying to rebuild my sons car engine, which was his passion and jot. Unfortunately he passed away last year due to long term illness. Awesome video and great tips Also don’t forget to bolt the cam bridge up before tensioning the main chain. With the chain tight it makes installing the bridge much more difficult.
I just wrapped up the timing set on a 2011 A5 this evening. I did have a heck of a time getting the cam bridge on because I had put it under tension first. This was my first time doing an Audi timing job and I didn't even think of it. I wish I had read all the comments first!
Your video explains a lot and simplifies this job well, Planned on doing this job for a while and stopped driving my A3 when it started making noise on startup. Glad I did cause today I got the lower timing cover off to be met with the early style chain tensioner.. My car was serviced at the dealer until 2019 under the 10yr warranty program by the previous owner, I was surprised to see the early tensioner style hanging out in there at 140kmiles.

@@HumbleMechanic Hey there! Back again! For a timing chain/tensioner project, what resource would you use to allow the most yet practical access to the engine? (Engine hoist? "Engine support bar"?) Is the 1.8L similar if not the same as the 2.0 timing? Clarification: My main issue is maintaining the engine within the parameters of the engine compartment, since access is tight and parts to the mount are in the way. So I am trying to find a safe, yet workable solution, especially since there is one main part leading to the passenger-side mount that really is in the way. Thank you a bunch for taking your time to answer as I go through tons of timing-related (as well as auto-related) content!
Fantastic companion to the repair manual! ( you did mention using the repair manual, right?) 😉 thanks for walking us through this. With the motor in the car. This stuff is very hard to see!
So much stuff jammed in there... This is why I love the Mercedes OM617: to change the timing chain, all you have to remove is the valve cover, the thermostat housing, and chain tensioner spring and housing. Then cut a link out of the old chain, attach the end of the new one to the old, making sure the chain is constantly meshed with the cam sprocket while you carefully rotate the crankshaft and the new chain gets pulled through, then permanently connect the ends of the new chain. Imagine, replacing a timing chain in less than 20 minutes. (With enough practice)
Freakin' VW dude. The idea of not having to mark shafts and whatnot but just time a chain by simply connecting the old with the new gave me a feeling I don't even know how to describe 😂
I had a 2009 1.8 tsi VW Passat with 219000km but i got tired of repairing it all the time and got rid of it and got a 2012 C250 Mercedes with 145000 kilometers. This Mercedes has perfect service history and great equipment list
Good video, I would have added the cam sprocket holding tool in the video as well when removing the crank bolt. Showing the step of reinstalling the crank pulley without risk of losing time on the bottom end.
Nice. Video just in time. I’m getting my cylinder head redone with new valves and valve seals so I will be rebuilding my top head. Along with everything brand new. Thank you for this video.
I have 1 last question. I’m putting my head together now. Does the metal gasket between the crank block and cylinder head take any of that black silicone? Or I just make sure everything is clean lay the gasket and torque the head down to 40Nm?
I did follow the video with the factory repair book specs and am still running strong 💪 thanks... 🎉 i though i was not.going to be able to do it all 💯, I replace all seals.. head, valve cover and main seal, and no leaks at all... thanks brothers 100000 times. You make me a mecanic jajaj
Thank you so much for this video man. Quick question for you, what should we be replacing when we change the tensioners? I've spoken to several shops that have given me quotes from $800 to $2600 and some of them say that they need todo balance shafts, cam bridges, cam cradle, or something like that... plus several chains, guides, lower cover, etc... I don't understand why the price is so ridiculous and they want to change so much when really the only part that is prone to fail is the actual tensioner/chain. I would infinitely appreciate your input!
Great video! I had this pre-emptively done to my 2011 Mk6 GTI a couple years before the big class action (new chain, tensioner, guides, and cover) because having a stab of anxiety every time you crank your car up isn't a good way to live. I'm glad the Mk7's don't seem to have the same tensioner and chain issues. Honestly it doesn't look like that bad of a job, though it's probably a much bigger pain in the ass to to do with the engine in the car, surrounded by accessories.
Getting the middle bolt out of the mounting bracket is probably the hardest bit. Just doing it on a Scirocco and there's not enough clearnace between engine and body for the bolt and a tool to remove it. Ended up removing the last bit one flat at a time, took ages. Not looking forward to putting it back in!
Wow Charles this was an awesome video I have a few of those TFSi 2.0L motors in A4s and I’m susceptible that I either broke a timing chain or jumped.. it cranks fast and like no compression.. I’m gonna open it up both upper/lower covers and have a looksie.. I feel very confident in putting on all new guides, timing chain and balance chains and even the oil chain and tensioners .. looking fwd to this now .. I was thinking it’s a scary job .. I also like your visual tdc indicator in cylinder 1.. excellent stuff .. really enjoy your content 👍🏻

Isso claro, se após essa empreitada meu motor não explodir. Um salve do Brasil! Forte abraço!
This helped me a lot, thanks so much. Had to replace my balance shafts and timing and had never even done timing before but made it happen.
Awesome.
From Zimbabwe , Africa thanks genius .
You have a good knowledge of mechanics. Thank you bro Thank you
You are the best buddy. Tanks, my wife learned in this video.
Great video! Sure does make more sense than the 40 pages in the factory repair manual!
YOU SIR ARE AWESOME! I have to do this on my wife’s 14 A4 . This helped a lot
I had a 2009 1.8 tsi VW Passat with 219000km but i got tired of repairing it all the time and got rid of it and got a 2012 C250 Mercedes with 145000 kilometers. This Mercedes has perfect service history and great equipment list
you are an excellent teacher... you should think about giving lessons for life!
Good video, I would have added the cam sprocket holding tool in the video as well when removing the crank bolt. Showing the step of reinstalling the crank pulley without risk of losing time on the bottom end.
literally all I came here for and he just says " its tricky" thanks...
@@Ozzaphellah just the metal gasket
I hope Lit is spending a lot for all there advertising on TH-cam! If not they should be! Video is just awesome.
I’ve seen their ads like 1,000 times. Ahahha and some moving company too
Thanks man..I'm totally understand now..tomorrow I will be retiming r4 Porsche macan..it's 2.0 tsfi engine.
I did follow the video with the factory repair book specs and am still running strong 💪 thanks... 🎉 i though i was not.going to be able to do it all 💯, I replace all seals.. head, valve cover and main seal, and no leaks at all... thanks brothers 100000 times. You make me a mecanic jajaj
lol, no cap I enjoy doing this job because it feels good to see a vehicle running good AFTER putting in my work and experience to use.
What I learned from this channel is VW are annoying to work on and has a crap ton of special tools required lol. But great teachings and content.
Super helpful. Thanks dude. About to tackle my stretched chain on my MK6 GTI. This, and the manual, will help.
They still have timing chain needs. 2014 passat. timing is at 4.7%
Thank you for the the advice for timing chain on a Volkswagen and makes my job a lot easier just I like working on cars
Excellent video, I am looking to do my Fiances timing chain on her VW Tiguan and this was extremely informative and helpful.
Thank you again, you made it possible for me to fix the car I purchased. You have detailed instructions. Thank you
Fantastic tuition video. Assuming you follow this guide to the letter, you'll have no problems.
You make look so simple, great instructions! I would feel confident doing it myself with this video
I feel the same way. Love his work.
feel the same way :D. can't wait to phuck up my engine and get that huge dealership bill
@@ArminVBThe1 you got this lol
Thanks a lot for your very detailed, informative and priceless timing video. Its been so helpful. Cheers. Be so blessed.
Hello an all the best to you from Romania... i have just followed your entire video with all steps included.... result? It runs better than before .... if you ever reach on these lands... i will be more than happy to offer a week of vacation here ,mount side or see side ,your call... i manage to avoid a 2000 euro damage . Thank you, and all the best to you !
Would you say this is job is do-able for someone who never did timing belts/chains?
@@cangungor090 i sure never did timing chians before this, and because a stupid mistake,i had to reset timining chain of audi 2.0 tfsi 2014, and by the exact specs of this guy... i have done it without the special tools that lock the engine in service mode... he is more than helpfull and a few people actually give a fair advice by knowing exactly what do they explain... i respect others work...
Those who can!!! TEACH! imma join the rest of y'all in stating the obvious. I am subscribed and ready to take on my Scirocco which has just popped the chain.
Awesome Tutorial and just finished my audi a3 sline with your humble vag knowledge..runs like new yahoo. May I ask what might be the best future motor swap for this 2012 audi a3 eventually in your opinion. Thanks and peace out
Thanks for making this video. It helped me learn these engines while making a video on a Tiguan that I checked out and repaired a few weeks ago. Great content on this channel.
Thanks for this video. It helped me get me audi back on the road.
Hey Charles, love the video man. Nice to see it outside the chassis
Hi, brother, it's very clear, fiddly, and I feel confident
I love your video's. Big fan. Have to swap head gasket of a 2.0 hdi and im nervous as can be. Love your skills sir. Awesome.
Bravo . Very clear video images and transcription
I like that zip-tie tip....just one little thing worry about less. This diy is waiting for me this summer....
Your video is fantastic, BUT remind people to cover the oil pan area before dropping a bolt, and it bouncing into the oil pan, Yep, I'm the one that made the impossible bolt into the oil pan.. Murphy is my best buddy, Dealer wanted $3,100.00 to do job, I did it for $220.00,, THANK YOU VERY MUCH,,,, SAVED MY WIFES CAR.
Thank you I did it with ur help and shop@DAP got everything I needed for this job just right. Only fail oil squirting out of dip stick even with new cover. Did not replace the seal on tube though. 🤞that dose it.
Still interesting to watch your video even I have done this job more than 10, 15 times. Very clear explanation.
Thanks so much
Damn, this makes the mk4 1.8t look like a breeze. I remember sweating making sure I had all the marks lines up.
The MK4 1.8T don't have anything on this, Even changing the timing chain tensioner and gasket is easier than working on this TSI engine. If I had a TSI engine I could definitely do this job.
Knowing my skill set and these new motors I would likely take this to my local VW shop. Kevin and his team are great and worth the money for this job. It seems harder to do this than the VR6 in my Jetta.
Here in DK all auth shops are incompetent, the just follow the guided service computer, and dont know how to measure/test anything
I'm totally agree with you soeren72. I think this kind of jobs are very delicates and must be done for a person with sources, skills, with enough care and taking measures and not only with a manual or machine. Excellent video!!
You are an excellent teacher. I am waiting for "How to properly time and install Timing Chain on Touareg V6 245 SI Petrol CGEA engine."
By the way the kit with all the tools on Amazon for the 2014 vw Jetta is $58.00 and has all the necessary plus a few not needed as well for other makes Excellent
thank you so much for this video, i did my own timing chain and this helped alot
Great video, great for a normal timing chain replacement however if the engine isn't already timed up then this video doesn't help as much, other videos have showed there are timing marks on the cam pulleys so may require a revisit or caption adding to the video, keep up the good work.
Well done. It is very useful. From Iraq - Erbil
Best video on the net for this job 👏 👌
Thank you so much for explaining the dark links won’t match up again. Lots of people don’t get that lol.
So much useful information and great tips !!! Thank you Humble Mechanic!!
Watching from Namibia or learning from Namibia
Great video! Not many show the balance shaft timing. Thanks!!
This is such a good video. I would love to see a video of this quality for a 3.0L TDI!
I don’t wanna. Hahahhaha that would be a super helpful Vid. But so much work
