Deadwood is one of my favorite HBO series. Timothy Olyphant played a great Bullock. My wife and I also liked him in Justified. So much so that when we needed a “R” name for my son’s middle name we went with “Raylan”.

Seth Bullock never "cleaned up" Deadwood and admitted as much in his unpublished memoirs. He told about a nucleus of underworld gamblers who actually ran things there. He would not mention their names, but the Denver newspaper described them as a "dozen men clique" who orchestrated the assassination of Hickok. Bullock mentioned that too in his unpublished memoir. Al Swearengen was certainly a member of the clique but not one of the two leaders. They were Billy Nuttall and "Ten Die" Brown. BTW, Nuttall and Con Stapleton were terribly portrayed i8n the HBO series, because they were both physical studs in their own right and Nuttall an excellent athlete and professional clog dancer. Bullock fought to be re-elected and it was a tight race, but the gamblers swung the vote in favor of Johnny Manning, He ran the top gambling saloon in Deadwood called the Senate. His partner was John Mann. Manning & Mann. The Deadwood papers related how Bullock was so pissed off at losing the election to Manning, that he refused to hand over the keys to the sheriff's office for two weeks. Bullock did not put that little fact in his memoirs.

I have stayed at the Bullock many many times. It use to be my favorite place to go on vacation when most of the slot machines used the coins and by the end of the night your fingers were black from handling the money. But now it’s all digital and new owners of the property and lots others. Use to love getting up early and going down stars where there was always hot coffee and porcelain cups to drink from and sit down and have a coffee and smoke. But now it’s styrofoam cups and no smoking. Also I loved the hills so much I bought a 40 acre place just across the state line in Wyoming but the rich and shameless have bought so much things have just went sky high and I couldn’t afford to build there after retirement. Use to be a great place but now it’s like any other. Money money money ruins everything.

There was virtually no difference between the Canadian and American West. It is rather parochial to express the view that the former was of no consequence by using maps that show the West to be American only. You need to do a little more research in order to present an accurate account of the Old West. 🤷‍♂

First: SUPER interesting guy. BUT, there was minimal gold in the Black Hills, and what was there was exaggerated by Custer and his party to lure in miners so the US could then take the land under a "protecting our citizens" approach. AND the Black Hills were ONLY part of the Sioux lands because the Sioux stole the land from the Crows a couple of generations before around 1765. The Treaty of Fort Laramie gave the land to the Sioux and Custer moving into The Black Hills was very illegal and everybody at the time on all sides knew it was illegal. There is an ongoing lawsuit that is still contested by the Sioux, even with a one billion dollar judgement for the Sioux. I hope they are successful. Not to be too political, but I'd rather see the Sioux get money in holding the US to its sworn treaty obligations than have that money spent on forgiving college loans for graduates with degrees that don't earn them money or contribute to our society, or college loans for folks who don't want to work or spend less than what they do make when they finally get to work. One is just and the other is vote pandering. (I'd like to point out that I paid back about $90K in school loans, early, and I was grateful for the opportunity at education those loans gave me. And I also understand about predatory collectors, which our government should give borrowers relief from.) Sorry for the political rant, but when you see how the Sioux were and continue to be treated and compare it to a worthless multibillion $ give away the injustice is clear.
