    🎹 For MAC users, drives formatted in HFS and APFS will also work, as long as they are not encrypted.

    Great video! You actually don’t need the hub tough, you just need to connect the power cable to the OTG and the HDD will have power, there’s no need of an external source.

      Depends on your iPhone/iPad. Some need more power and at least the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter

    I just bought a Toshiba external hard disk drive and it’s NTFS. I kind of felt that it’s the issue why I can’t transfer any files. So I did some Google search, and your vide was the first to pop up, and it quite clearly showed the solution. I will go home and reformat the hard drive to exFAT. Thanks for this tutorial!

    Oh you are a superstar.
    I never realised why my iPad Pro would not see my LaCie 1Tb hard drive. I purchased a powered 4 port hub and using the Apple powered adapter I can now access it.
    However, I did have to reformat the hard drive from NTFS to exFAT file system.
    PLEASE BE WARNED THAT THIS ERASES ALL CONTENT ON THE DRIVE SO BACK EVERYTHING UP FIRST.
    It really did work sooooo brilliantly thanks pal.

    I have a seagate 2TB HD for my iPad Pro. So you know you don’t need to power a HD with the iPad Pro as it’s powerful enough to power the HD. Also I just purchased a Sata HD caddy for my iPad Pro that can hold 3.5 or 2.5 HD’s. As I don’t own any form of pc or laptop anymore and have a collection of old HD’s with stuff on them I need to get off/use and then clear space on them for future backups.
    so I’ll let you know how that turns out when it arrives on Friday.

    Thanks Pete for this "detailed" video. I am in the process of scanning all of our family pictures to a USB Ext Drive and have 3K+ pictures on a NTFS drive. I was going to back all of them to another Ext Drive so I just formatted that one to exFAT. After I back them up to the exFAT drive I will re-format the NTFS drive and re-format that one to exFAT. My kids all use Apple so I will be good to go with my powered USB Hub. All GREAT stuff and thanks again. You saved our family much grief in the future! !! !!!

    Hi. I just bought a Seagate hard drive and an authentic USB 3 Camera kit on Apple retailer here in my country. It's already in exFAT format out of the box, unfortunately the hard drive is just blinking and my iPad mini 5 doesn't read the drive.

    Pete, a USB to Lighting cable would have been much cheaper and simpler than your powered hub. I use one all the time with my 7th Gen iPad, which has a Lightning port. The same Apple adapter you're using, but with my USB to Lightning cable for power. No hubs necessary.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. If you’re using the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter you can just plug the lightning port in to power. I recommend a hub because you can then hook up an interface , keyboard etc as well. But you’re spot on. Many drives work with just the adapter as long as you have power. studiolivetoday.com/usb

  • @davetpilot
    @davetpilot 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    FYI You don’t need a powered usb hub. The adapter has pass through charging ability via the lightning port to charge your i(device) as well as the ability to power the usb port. 😉
    If you plug in a drive, the i(device) will say “cannot use accessory - this accessory uses too much power”. Then simply plug your i(device) charger into the wall and into the adapter’s lightning port.
    The drive will be powered through the usb port.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nice one. Yes, some devices will work with just device power and others with a power pass-through if you're using the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. I still prefer a powered hub for convenience and multiple devices personally. studiolivetoday.com/usb

Why can't you expand on the idiosyncrasies of actually transferring files, to and from the iPhone/external drive, and showing the actual process on the Files app screen? Apple has not made the GUI interaction particularly easy, given the additional commands that are hidden behind their tiny icons and not readily apparent.

    Hey Pete, thanks for the informative video. Just purchased my first iPad and plan to dump several files onto it from an external My Passport drive that I've had for a while. Unfortunately, I already had about 72GB of data on the drive and its formated as NTFS. I have already backed up the 72GB of data onto another drive so that it won't be erased when I re-format the drive. My question: When I go to re-format the drive to exFAT there are several options that pop up for "allocation unit size", the default is 256 kilobytes but it ranges from 64 to 32758, is it best to leave this on the 256 default setting or is there a better selection I should choose? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
