    The only thing worse than a repair taking way more time and effort as planned, is finding out it didn't fix anything. Including the setbacks in your vids just makes them that much more relatable! You got this!

    Great video. I am sorry things didn’t quite work out but anyone who actually works on older vehicles, completely understands. Your channel is all the better for the honesty in the content. Working within the constraints of a budget, always translates to more wrench work and time. Completely normal. Cheers 🍻

    I bought an 18 month old Niva in the 90s, in the next 5 years I replaced just about every bearing and rubber mount in the car. I found that the trick is to expect that everything you remove is going to be worn or broken, that way anything that isn't will come as a pleasant surprise. Keep up the great work!

    Yes it's always the parts switched between generations. I had the same fun with the 5th gear gear and the diferrent inside diameter.

    In my experience with gears boxes especially old ones is the spring weakness or breaks in the selector housing that holds the gear in place.
    Take a look at the selectors I think that's where your problem lies

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      That could very well be.... I was also suspecting engine/trans mount.. because its in the small movement when I let go of the throttle that kicks it out of fourth...

    Hi Seppo another very enjoyable video on the Lada but you definitely need to persevere with that 5th gear mate because how will you ever know whether your radio is on or off if you use the 4 speed I can’t hear mine until I’m in 5th but that all adds to the character of the car. All the best from AU Richard 😂

    I've been told that the 4 speed is more reliable and resistant. The issue with noise can be adressed, I think. My Niva has a thick engine bay insulation and it is noticeably quieter than other Nivas I have driven, even with very worn out driveshafts and joints.

    I'd be looking for a bent selector road, worn dogs and weak damaged ball detents on the shift rods. That's normally the root cause of gear jumping.

      Thanks... I think I was blinded a bit about the fact that this is a common issue on the lada niva and its the thrust washer that is the culprit... But of course it can be so many things! I think you are on to something here, and I will look into it!

    You need a daily driver and need to use the lift to work on other cars. It will be useful to know if the four speed gearbox is in working condition. Taking those factors into account, maybe fit the four speed gearbox. That will enable you to drive the Lada while you investigate the cause of the problem with the five speed gearbox and order parts. ☮️

    Sounds like something inside the box has failed causing it to pop out of gear, which sucks given the work you did on trying to get it working again... :(

      @@SeasideGarage I don't know about the Lada gearbox but a lot of the older gearboxes used to have a ballbearing under the selector , when the ballbearing had worn down it would fall out of it's seat and then it would jump out of gear , or it might be a chipped tooth on the gear itself . I don't know if this is the case with the Lada gearbox though. 10 out of 10 for your patience and enquiring mind to sort out this problem .

  • @sinorman231

    what a shame,, must be better to try keep a 5 speed i expect will lower the RMP so will use less fuel, am sure you will find problem,,at least it doesnt jump out of 5th gear

  • @theblackhand6485
    @theblackhand6485 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well what should I say? It is your own lack of interest not wanting to open up the gearbox itself. If you should have done that you would have find the problem(-s).
    So know you have to replace the gearbox once, no, twice again, just replace the clutch parts you didn't replace thus far: what is good today can be worn out tomorrow. In other words: you might happily drive another three months and suddenly the clutch gets stuck. And then what? Then you have to get off the gearbox for a forth time!
    Changing know is driving happily for the next 8 years or so.
