I watched dozens of RC 600 reviews and this is hands down the most useful video on how to use the gear. Exactly what I was looking for as a beginner looping artist. Thank you!
Hey Rick, thanks for posting your content. I really appreciate the organic and pragmatic presentation. I come from a systems development background and your experience outside of looping comes through in your videos. Best of luck and I look forward to your future videos.
Thanks so much! Yeah that background is sort of unavoidable in the way I present things :). I've got another one in the works and hopefully it's as useful as this one in a slightly more hands-on way.
Nice vid mate. I don’t have a 600, have the 500 that I’m not real fond of. Now I’m about to try Loopy Pro and see if that works for me. Your vid is making me think again and maybe going the 600 route…hmmmm. Thanks for the info!
I feel like my response should be somewhere between "I'm sorry" for creating the uncertainty and "you're welcome" for providing the info. I actually want to look at Loopy Pro a bit myself, though I really love the 600 at this point. The trigger for making this video was realizing I was getting really comfortable with the workflow I've been able to fashion from it. Thanks for the comment!
I'm so glad I found this video. I've had the RC -600 for a while now and there is a steep learning curve here. There are a lot of videos out there, but this is my favorite so far. I really like the way that you presented your work flow. It was not rushed, and it was explained very well. Keep up the good work Rick! This video helped me a lot!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you got a lot out of it. Since workflows are so custom to the looper I was worried this wouldn't be generally useful, but I wanted to try and see what people thought. And some of those tips at the end are a big part of my show these days :).
I enjoyed this very much. You did it in such an orderly manner. I am a beginner looper and a song writer. Laying out percussion and bass for the entire piece is my challenge. I play acoustic and electric and sing. I want to save lots of originals, some simple, some complex, and use it for live productions with other vocalists and musicians. I also play bass. Any examples would be helpful. Thank you, Mark.
Hi Just found this video and your channel. THANK YOU!!!! I’m just getting started and the workflow stuff is exactly what I needed. I will have to adjust the workflow to the RC505 as that’s the unit I have, but the settings I believe are pretty close if not exact if I’m not mistaken. Needless to say I’m now subscribed and hope that you’re able to continue making content like this. Thanks again!!!!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you got value out of this :). I have a mix of ideas (and I'm exploring TH-cam Shorts) for future videos, but I do expect to make more of this type of content, along with some ideas I use in my actual arrangements (and in particular some common ways I use the workflow I outline in this video in practice). Thanks for subscribing!
I'm glad yt suggested me this one, I searching from time to time sth on rc600. I found your video inspirational, attractive and professional. Thanks for that!
That's a great video, very well done. Just for the sake of discussion: on the basic workflow, if you set tracks 2 and 3 to single mode, this is why, how and when you use single mode: while track 3 is playing you hit record/play on track 2 and you can immediately record the chorus part while you sing it and nobody sees you do it, and it happens with a single press. Right now you're having to stop 3 and then start 2, but that's the exact problem single mode solves. I love where you put the all start/all stop, I may steal that one. Thanks, man! Blinding Lights is great!
This is a great alternative approach to part of what I do with this and helps me understand single mode, since I haven't really played with it at all. That would work on many of my arrangements, though in general my arrangements are split between this faux-single mode I demonstrate and a true multi mode (my cover of Melt With You is like this). Also, I love your setup! And beautiful cover of Time After Time on your channel :).
@@RickSandersMusic I have five patch setups: one is Ed-Sheeran-style all-multi mode, the way you're set up. Another is one multi and two single, which I'd use the way I suggested here (90% of my songs are performed on that SSM mode), then I have a four-channel MSSS (I put the multi in the top row for percussion). I can use this for songs with three distinct parts, such as Wild Night, One Headlight, and It's My Life. That allows me to record the three parts on the first pass and switch to electric lead-rhythm. It's a lot of fun! Then I have a "Tennessee Whiskey" mode that's S-M but in 6/4, and an "Africa" mode that's in 2/4. It's really great for creativity and on-the-fly looping. I appreciate the discussion!
Haha, I always wondered when someone would have a look at the bookshelf. I've read those a few times, though these days it's usually audiobooks :). Cheers for the comment.
Very nice video! I think SINGLE MODE on tracks 2 and 3 would help a lot in that switch you r showing around 19:40? Again, thanks for the video. Inspiring!
Well-spotted! To avoid starting a song in the wrong memory, I'm using a one-size-fits-all setup. So I can emulate single mode with my settings (as I demonstrate) but I can also use tracks 2 and 3 together if I want to (for instance, if the chorus is the same chord progression as the verse). And my arrangements are roughly 50-50 between the two. Previously I had a second memory for different track lengths (which made a handful of songs easier to loop) but I found myself in the wrong memory too often and I'd have to train-wreck and restart. So I use this one for everything and it supports every song in my repertoire.
I’m so happy I found your channel! Do you explain why you use the TC helicon harmonizer instead of the harmonizing capability in the RC 600 in another TH-cam video?
Thanks for the kind comment! In truth, some of it is habit - the Voicelive Play is the oldest pedal on this board. I used it back when I was doing acoustic covers with an RC-1 looper when I started. But I've heard mixed reviews of the onboard harmonizer effect. I could absolutely experiment with the RC600's effect and see where it fits in. A couple practical considerations with the setup in this video as organized, though is - I am currently out of FX slots. So I'd have to drop something to make room for it. And my vocal mic only occasionally goes through the RC600, which is another thing. For the mini-kit (see my other long video on the channel) it's something that might be worth experimenting with, but I'm again, pretty constrained by available FX slots. So TL;DR - I'd 100% try it if I was starting from scratch, but it's hard to make room for it with my setup as it is today, and I just love the VoiceLive Play pedal. Happy looping!
Great video!! We have very similar workflows 🤘 have you tried playing with loop sync on tracks 2-4 set to loop length? I ended up doing that after getting the wrong measure starting a few times 😂 Subscribed and going to keep watching, thanks!
Hey thanks for the comment! I think I have too many songs with too many different track lengths to know if that will work for what I do. It might, in truth, but I prefer being in control of the "start" - if I miss a loop start or start it early, I just jam "stop" twice to kill the rogue loop and hit start again. But it doesn't happen very often anymore :). Cheers!
Excellent,I might have to get one.. I got the RC 500.. it's simple to use but I might have to get one of these to. Thanks for the information in the time I've learned a lot on this one.. I didn't know s*** about the rc600 but it seems like everyone's using it... I'm pretty cool with the ic500 now, and this will help me when I get the rc600 I'm definitely getting one
Super helpful thank you for making this video. Not sure if it's possible with your current setup, but learning how incorporate a MIDI keyboard would be great!
It's something I'm looking into, actually! A lot of my workflow choices are the lack of things to assign to. It would open some interesting doors having that option.
So I'm not sure how you would do that with an expression pedal in particular - if you're referring to how I use an external footswitch (Ctrl rather than Expr) then I'd say that while I use an external footswitch to Play Tracks 1&2, I don't use it to stop them - I instead use All/Start Stop to stop things in my setup. To set up the "play/record Tracks 1 & 2" I set up two assigns to the button in question: the first of which does Play/Rec on Track 2, and the second of which does Play/Rec on Track 1. That order is important (Track 2, THEN, Track 1) and I share why towards the end of my video "Designing a Portable RC-600 Loop Setup". Hope that helps!
I don't *think* that's possible. I think only one track can be recording at a time. And you can set different tracks to only record from certain inputs (it's another way to record vocals only some of the time). But if you're asking if the mic can go to Track 2 while the guitar goes to Track 3, I don't think the RC600 supports that.
@@christopherturner5053 I don't have direct experience with that, but I'm fairly certain you would be able to use different amplifiers (I interpreted "at the same time" as simultaneously, rather than "in the same setup" at first). Generally running into a mixer. The "mini-kit" often goes directly to an amp, but my primary setup is to a mixer. It works pretty much in any setup I've used, though I make sure not to do much to the EQ of the system I plug in to since I pre-EQ the tracks inside the RC600.
Great in depth video, your explanations are very well presented! One thing I did not understand however, is the benefit of having track 1 on Immediate sync instead of measure. I certainly understand the negatives of that, but what benefit does it give you? Why not just have it on Measure as well? Thanks.
Great question! And I did forget to include this. It's specifically for the "Track 1&2 start" (or if I wanted to do Track 1&3 later). That button has an assign for Track 2 Play/Rec and an assign for Track 1 Play/Rec, but it doesn't activate them simultaneously - it hits them one after another. So if I set Track 1 to Measure sync, rather than starting them together, Track 2 will start but Track 1 will wait for the next measure to start. (This was a bit maddening to figure out at the time) I might have mentioned this in my last video, but I'm not sure I ever said explicitly that this is why Track 1 had to set to Immedate sync. With Track 1 set to Immediate, Track 2 starts right away because that assign fires first, and Track 1 starts right away because of the Immediate. I hope that makes sense as I've described it here; I may file that away to add into a future video!
I need major help.. while I still have the problem I’m facing clear in my head. Im trying to loop the song “ one headlight” as you probably know.. the verse is waaaaay longer then the chorus. So after recording the verse in track 1, I attempt to record the chorus in track 2. When I hit record/play button after recording track 2 it doesn’t start to play… it records as long as my track 1 is. So I’m left with dead air until it ends. Please any help would be amazing!
Assuming you're using my setup, Track 1 will define what one measure is. So in your example, with a desire to have different loop lengths, I'd recommend putting some kind of percussion on Track 1 that represents a drum groove, then record your Verse and Chorus on Tracks 2 & 3 (or 4). That will let them be different lengths from each other and lower the minimum length. I hope this helps!
Great question - my mic runs through a Loopi A/B Switcher. By default it goes directly to the board, bypassing the looper, but I can choose to have it go into the looper. It's positioned after the VoiceLive Play so I can record those effects in my loops when I want.

this was really good, but you really needed to turn the bad drone music , that was in the background, while you were explaining things. it was very annoying . thank you though for the info
My next video will probably feature less and/or quieter music (only in the intro/outro) :). I've gotten this feedback a couple times. Thanks for watching!
@@RickSandersMusic hey Rick, I just really appreciate you man. love your videos.
are you a musician? are you an active listener as a musician? Why do you have that incredibly distracting music in the back ground when you are explaining a complicated piece of gear to MUSICIANS?
Apologies for the distraction. I confess it doesn't distract me when I'm talking through technical stuff, but I'll keep that in mind for future videos. And yes, I'm a musician :).
I noticed it, but wasn’t distracted. I’m a multi instrumentalist.
@@harmonyaquarian9210 I’m an active listening musician who focuses on music when it’s being played, background music is for day walking mouth breathers who don’t listen!(aka bad or non musicians)
Been playing guitar for 27 years, the background music didn't bother me. Het off your hugh horse @bonzology322
@@fandangobrandango7864 Playing guitar for 27 years badly isn't impressive
