    Over 40yrs I have sailed and owned six fiberglass and one wooden boat that I poured my heart, time, and money in restoring her. There were days over the two yrs that I just wanted to pack it all in, but her soul kept calling me back. It will become if it has not already a mission, a passion to bring her back to life. I am hoping that Ken can find the time to lend a hand or his knowledge as it will be invaluable. An adventure you and your family will relish all your lives. Yvan

    Well now, you have certainly gotten my attention. A neglected John Alden schooner bought sight unseen. My heart is with you no matter how you may interpret my comments. I am a boat carpenter and have owned a couple of boats this vintage and others. I've subscribed to this channel so I can meet you and possibly help you in some way throughout your journey. Mr. Page, I am looking at a 1959 Alden/Hinckley 42' yawl. I believe it's a one off build. Original named Bellatrix , currently Night Wind. She is in Brooklin, Maine on the hard for at least three years. Not sure how we could message each other with out making public. I subscribed to this channel as well, because I want to learn from these two...

    I sailed on this boat a lot when I was kid growing up in Essex CT 25yrs ago. Sad to see the condition but great to watch the recovery. As an owner of an Alden wood ketch, this also helps keep pep in my step for maintenance.

      @aldensadventurer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I own the Alden ketch Abigail and keep her a couple towns near where Mark kept Adventurer. Abigail looks like a 39’ Malabar XII. Hopefully we cross tacks again. Good luck in the restoration.

      Also I find the soul and craftsmanship of these old wooden boats amazing.. if this was a fiberglass or aluminum it wouldn't be worth fixing..being able to always fix anything that goes wrong with a wooden boat makes them very special

    I remember the listing was under 60k when I saw it, it sure is a rotten boat but not so bad, certainly not the worse I see on this video. I didn't buy it because I couldn't visit the boat back then.
    It is an excellent boat if you know how to deal with wooden boats, otherwise it is expensive as there aren't a lot of people knowing how to work with wooden boats these days.

    I do love the impossible brought to its knees Keep the faith and watch "Sailing Yaba" and of course "Captain Ron" / Keep in mind that rebuilding an old wood boat is like building a new one with an old boat in the way. Never lose sight of the adventure after the fact as seen in "sailing Uma" and Parley revival. An Yes I do spend my time on YT and loving every minute of it. As Parley said "In 40 years " you get the idea. Love your new channel and can't wait for the next episode.

    My Grandfather had an Alden 54ft schooner, which he kept at Rose Wharf in Boston before the war. As Howard worked at the Custom House in Boston, the noon meal was often ate on board, being a short walk from work. Although young, I remember her lines were beautiful and she sailed like a dream. Captain Ron: "That's just dry rot. Don't worry about it. All boats have it. At least yours is above the water line. Well, most of it, anyway." At least you're young. Because, while rewarding, repairing old wooden boats, is definitely a young person's game. But, kudos to you two for doing it and saving the old girl! (and, if you don't understand the reference, go rent "Captain Ron" one night, it will make you laugh and make you feel better!)

    I'm usually critical about most people working on boats I've been around boats most of my life 67 years of it I'm retired commercial lobstermen and fishermen out of the state of Maine and have preferred Wooden Boats until the last few years I know your intentions are good on saving this John Alden schooner. Most John Alden boats narrow and not much room below what I like is that you're tearing the transom out and you haven't even got the lines that are on the deck out-of-the-way

    • @aldensadventurer
      @aldensadventurer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you are a man after our own heart!! With a life at sea you must have many stories. Adventurer is fairly roomy down below, at least for something of her shape and year.
      Haha, the vacancy of the travel lift was a last minute offer and we jumped at it, couldn’t explain all this in the video but love that you spotted the unkempt deck 😂👍

    I'm looking forward to following you on this project. But can I suggest you keep camera movement to an absolute minimum in every shot. Plan the shot in your head first, then set the camera on a tripod and shoot it. You can't move the camera about swiftly up and down, side to side on the run as your eyes see something and you refer to it. Viewers can't adjust that quickly.
    If there is to be a pan or tilt, do it gently, deliberately, otherwise it makes for some "seasick" viewing.
    When talking to the camera as you did, avoid lots of headroom between the tops of your head and top of screen....eyes should be in the top 1/2 to 1/3 of the frame..
    Good luck.

    Hi folks, I enjoyed your first 2 videos and hope there are more to come. I circumnavigated on an Alajuela 38 called Moonshadow which is based on an Atkins design from the early 1900's She's glass, but still a traditional boat design. I still own and sail her but, I'm not doing long ocean passages at this point, however still hope I have a few more in me. Not many modern boats pull my heart strings like your Alden or my Atkins/Alajuela

      I think you got rooked. Did you have the vessel surveyed before you bought it? If not, have it surveyed and closely check all the framing timbers. If you have rotten frames, best replace them and all the rotten planks. If the boat doesn’t pass a close inspection when you’re done, don’t even think about taking her offshore. You have a lot to chew on, good luck.

    • @aldensadventurer

      Danged fresh water is the culprit. If she leaked saltwater into the bilge while sitting that will help. You’ll need to be totally committed or it’ll break you. I’ve seen countless dreamers tackle old wooden boat projects that never succeed. I had a friend who saved a 26’ catboat from being burned as a bonfire, because it was not much more than driftwood. Five years later, she was gorgeous, completely rebuilt. I asked him how long it took to finish her, he answered, “Who says she’s done”. That’s it with wooden boats, you’re never done.
      I once saw a quote by a Navy admiral written on the bulkhead below on a steel schooner. “The only thing ship’s do by themselves is rust”

    You don't need a tent, you need a cool shed with natural ground floor to keep the woods moisture respectively not to dry it to fast. Drying fast will result in cracks and the planks will shrink a lot so the gaps will open up with no chance to close again. Depends very much on the wood the planks are made off. To be honest this project is far bigger than you imagine and will take years probably. Another reason to work in a shed. I have an A&R from 1937 in an brick stone build shed with a cellar below and two levels above making the climate inside very stable and warm enough even to work when it's minus degrees outside. Unheated of course. Heating would dry the air and therefore be seriously counter productive. The floor is concrete but with the rest of the building being just perfect it's at least great to work and easy to clean. I believe you're going to work full time on it, so that will make things a lot faster. But be prepared to discover a lot more than you already have. My boat was not floating anymore but looked quite sound, I knew the frames have to be replaced and the deck was completely rotten. What I found out the keel sole, the aft and forward stem had to be replaced, many planks as well. The keel bolts from galvanized iron were only needle thin and the iron has reacted with the oak, destroying the wood and the bolts at the same time. The keel sole will be soaking wet and needs to dry really slowly. The thicker the wood the slower. If it can be safed which I doubt. The hull - deck connection was rotten as on Adventurer and caused planks to be exchanged. In the end there's not much left from the original boat. Didn't want to discourage you, but it's better to be aware of what is coming up I believe.

    Found the description of Adventurer online, certainly a boat with history. Watching the video as your moving her for haul out, was struck by the sight of the current cockpit coaming, so the 1992 refit did quite a number things. Think it’d be interesting to see how the layout changed over time. Best of luck with the work ahead of y’all!

    This looks a promising channel - hope it works out for you all. The high speed panning with the camera reveals the excitement you feel. The description on the offcenterharbor web page makes me think you have a beautiful boat with lots of potential. I'm hoping you'll carry on the TH-cam series of boat rebuilds.

    I've seen this many times here on TH-cam...people fall in love with the idea of a boat and that pushes everything else off the screen. But they didn't buy an 'idea'...they bought a wreck. Often it will be cheaper to just build a new boat from scratch than to try and 'restore' a wreck like this. I know this sounds harsh but it is often the reality. Lovely people, now facing the hell of boat restoration. I wish them good luck and happy sailing down the road. Have a look at Sailing Yaba to see what is involved in 'restoring' a rotten boat...definitely would have been cheaper just to commission a new boat. At least with Yaba they have cheap labor and good access to a range of woods at low prices. In America...another story entirely.

      Yes wood and labour (which we are doing ourselves) may be cheaper elsewhere, but this is where the boat was . We are very happy to find ourselves in Cambridge. A new build may “often” be cheaper than repairing or rebuilding an old one… but oh the workmanship and the history and the uniqueness of the old ones.

    I don't know if you are foolish dreamers or you'll be able achievers, this is a massive job with the associated massive costs. Even if you supply your own labor this is a shed load of cash and effort. Personally I wouldn't take the boat if it was free, despite having boat building skills and the spare time, but the cost is to prohibitive and unless you are seriously cashed up, I hope you don't regret this decision.

    When it is restored, may it last another 100 years.
    Being older, think I would rather sail then restore, but it will remain quite a beauty. Hope the cost of lumber, which has been rather high, does not 'sink' your efforts to rebuild it. Looks even more ambitious that Magic Carpet, and they have a protected shed to work in. See Sailing Alma.

      Hi Robert. Thank you for your comment. Absolutely! The only reason we are restoring her is so we can go sailing.

      @@aldensadventurer Well, I built 3 boats from plans, I've used West System epoxy lots of times and it's finicky and expensive. A famous boat builder from Wa. state that made my boat plans told me about Raka epoxy. Now it's all I use. Far superior to West Systems, And it costs less too. I mixed epoxy with a little cabosil and graphite powder I got from "Raka" I mixed to a thick black paint consistency and coated the bottom up to the boot stripe. I sanded it smooth exposing the graphite super slick bottom and on the saltwater every day never got marine growth.
