I am in my 70’s. My family moved from a small town in New York (pop 5000) in the early sixties to Southern California. You are right that California isn’t like it used to be but neither is the small town we left. Because I have family there, I’ve been back many times. I’ve also driven across the country many times, spent extended time in other states and other countries and none are the same as they used to be. They shouldn’t be, times goes on. My “home base” is still Southern California, I still love much about SoCal, I’d appreciate less traffic though.

I completely agree with you about California. I was born and raised in the Bay Area and raised my 3 kiddos there too and it has changed so much. My husband and I are in the process of putting our house on the market and we too are moving to Aiken. We found Aiken 4 years ago and visited right be for the big shut down. We loved it but had to wait for our last kiddo to graduate HS. I'm loving your insight on the town and all things it offers. Can't wait until your next video.

So glad you're enjoying you new place. If you decide to explore, come up to North Georgia. Julep Farms in Dillard is a wonderful place to dine and stay with 4 amazing themed cottages. From there, up the mountain, is beautiful Highlands, NC with the exquisite Old Edwards Inn and Spa. We also have Clayton, GA which is a destination for tourist to shop and dine. And don't miss the sweet Alpine Village of Helen, Ga. I moved to the area (Clarkesville) almost 4 years ago and I never get tired of the breathtaking scenery and friendly people. Best to you!

I lived in Southern California most of my life. 20 years ago I decided to move and now I only wish I had done it earlier. It was taking me an hour to get from one side of town to the other on the weekends even back then! When I see the news today about where I lived, I am shocked at all of the crime - we rarely had crime when I lived there. I agree with you, it's just not the same place I remembered. We worked so many early morning hrs gardening. Loved it. And canning. We lived off the land and oh would love nothing more than to be living that way again.

I moved to San Jose when I got married and it was quite a shock (except I love all the shopping, haha!). The last 20 years it has changed and become more crowded. He usually keeps track of how many people come through the garden each year. Their next door neighbor is totally into it now too. She’s thing that they both need to be on an official garden tour. It’s great that you are loving Aiken. We live in a small town in Arkansas that is in the foothills of the Ozark. We have around 7,000 people. We love it. I was born in Arkansas but we’ve moved around and lived in Alaska for 20 years, Seattle, Wa. and Vacaville, Ca. Our daughter is still in Benicia, Ca. We love our town of Heber Springs living near the lake and good ole southern people.

Aiken sounds dreamy for sure. I never understood why so many people want to move to Florida. Way too many people for me and I’m not at all attracted to it. I like small, quiet and easy to get around to different places. The Carolina’s are beautiful!

Hi Just started watching your videos and really enjoying them. I turn 70 (!) in September, eeekkk!Oh well I'm so lucky, many die way too young. I'm sure impressed with how independant you are and just living a great life on your own. I live in California and moved to the desert to avoid the traffic, and congestion. I am loving La Quinta except for the heat. There is obviously no place without something that's not perfect (humidity, heat, tornadoes etc etc) but I hope you end up finding your forever home there but if not who cares, the next adventure awaits. Thanks for your lovely personality and for sharing.

I live in So. California and I would never live anywhere else. I feel very blessed to live in this beautiful state. I was born in New York and I am so happy my father was smart enough to bring us to the beautiful state of California. I do not like the humidity in the south.

I lived in Dana Point & San Juan Capistrano & absolutely loved it because I moved there from Michigan. But now I'm in sierra vista, Az where it is quite dry, we retired here but my heart will always be in So. California. No ocean here!!

Almost four years ago, I moved across country in the opposite direction of Kimberly. After living my whole life on the east coast, I am now in the (secret-shhh) paradise of the California desert. I always wanted to live in California, and finally made it at 60. Spectacular and heavenly 💕

You mentioned Southern when wearing dresses and you could see why. I was raised in south Arkansas and live in Tulsa,OK . Both are hot and steamy in the summer. At age 76 I find linen, cotton, or gauze skirts and cotton tee shirts or tops of similar fabrics are my best summer choices. Glad you are settling in and are liking Aiken. Wishing you all the best❣️

I so love these vlogs. The more you talk about Aiken the more excited i become about moving there. Aiken first got my attention because of the horse community and the weather. While, where i live in northern VT is absolutely gorgeous, the winters are brutal and I start dreading them in August.
Im hoping to come down to the area this winter to check it out in person. Perhaps we can meet and have lunch!?.
The idea of riding my horse year round has me so excited. I do not ride in the winter here, its way too cold.
Although im not a gardener, watching your videos kind of have me excited to try. Thank you and keep the videos coming please!. 😊

We live in a heritage small town, half hr. to coastal beaches, weekly markets in the main St.
lovely highset heritage homes & lowset, nice friendly people & trees, trees,& beautiful maturegardens everwhere, nearly forgot, a big river running to the coast. We,re very happy. I hope you stay in Aitken.

I completely agree with you about California. I was born in Glendale (50 miles from L.A.) and spent 50 years there. It was once very sweet; but, as you say, no longer. So, hubby and I moved to Cedar Crest, NM for the next 25 years....so different from California. Loved the friends we made there; but, we grew tired of the very cold winters (sometimes 22 degrees). So we got out a map and decided we wanted warm, green and about the same temperature as San Diego, Ca. we drew a line laterally on the map and landed on Aiken, SC. We visited about 3 times for vacation and then made our big move. We've been here 5 years and truly love it. We found the same sweet people you have met and felt the same small town atmosphere-feeling that you have expressed. We are in our early 80's and don't plan to move anywhere else. So glad you love Aiken, too. And I loved your Blog today....maybe I'll plant veggies on our upper deck so the deer don't get them...LOL

I am so enjoying your videos and admire your decision to move cross country to start a new chapter in a place that makes you feel at home. Your ambition in settling and decorating inside and landscaping outside amazes me and I so enjoy watching the antics of Lucy and Dex in the background investigating everything you do. I look forward to your next vlog !

I’m pretty sure there is no nitrogen in that compost. If things aren’t growing right, you might try an organic fertilizer. A good quality potting mix is a good choice for planting.

I too am from Northern California originally. I spent my life there until my late fifties, raised our daughters and worked, my husband retired and we decided to move to Harvest, Alabama! We have family near by, so it seemed like an ideal location. Other than the humidity in the summer, and the occasional threat of tornado's, we are very happy here. I guess everywhere except the west coast has actual weather! The cost of California living, and the crime makes us very happy to live in the South!
