Thank you so much for uploading this! A delight from start to finisch! I always rewinded Wilder's parts and watched them twice. What a wonderfull human being he was! All of them, really :)
I was a movie theatre usher when "The Producers" played in St. Louis back in 1967. I loved it. Most people loved it. One guy hated it and asked for his money back. I think he was used to movies as "spectacle"...not "in your face".
The so called re-make to me only proved how fantastic the original film was. Btw I hate musicals they bore me to tears and I would never go and see a staged version of this. The film is about the creation of a "musical" staged production but to actually create a staged version of the whole thing to me is insane because the great joy of the film is seeing it for the first time and NOT knowing the plot - on the other hand most if not all musicals actually give away the plot in their programs along with the scene details. I am so glad I saw the film without spoilers and got to see the awesome chemistry between Zero Mostell and the natural comedic genius of Gene Wilder providing the perfect showcase for what was to come. As for Zero Mostell when I saw the film I did not realise how much of the real Zero Mostell was inserted into his character Mr Bialystock - it was only some years later when viewing his appearance in a talk show (back in the day) when I finally realised that after all for most part Zero was just playing himself! That is a tribute to Mel Brooks because he picked the perfect person for that role and to this day I could not envision anyone getting anywhere near the performance of Zero Mostell.
Everyone is declared a "national treasure" by someone making a comment on TH-cam video. At last count, I think there are 10,159 people I've seen declared as a "national treasure" meaning being declared a national treasure confers a uniqueness about as special as a pomegranate...
While this other commenter states that the term is overused, it is truer for Mel Brooks than for anyone else. I have this thought about Mel anytime I think of him and I know no other who fits the bill. Carl Reiner was close - a comedic genius whom I loved and Mel loved, but I don’t know if there will ever be another Mel Brooks. He is the only person who earns that title from me.
I saw this by chance as a double feature along with Monty Python's "And now for something completely different" at a neighborhood theatre. They would alternate the films and I would stay all day. I also saw harold and maude and obsession this way. This was in the mid 70's.
Mel Brooks didn’t have that much faith in the adaptation of the play, it goes onto win the most Tony’s in history. I’m glad it did so well and we have three ways of enjoying the Producers now
Mel brought in Thomas Meehan (Annie, Spaceballs) to help give the script a musical structure. Mel wanted Jerry Herman (Hello Dolly, Mame) to write the songs but Jerry told Mel he is a good songwriter and should do it himself so the comedy would be all his. Wise advice.
A true masterpiece-- the only time in England history where it was reversed-- a TV movie hit than became a true hit on Broadway-- art mimicking life and than life mimicking art!!!- a true one of a kind!!!-- mel brooks is such a funny down to earth non- political correct man--- the producers made a success out of a flop!!!!---
I'm here to remind myself of what satire looks like, in preparation for the release of Jojo rabbit. The last time I saw The Producers was when they still had VCRs.
HrHFish went to an amateur show of this at our local theatre. A complete stranger and me couldn’t control ourselves after the big musical scene and the guy playing Bialy had to hold up until we could get a grip on ourselves. I wish i knew the guys name. He was West End quality.
Love this film. It 's the best US comedy ever made. Its up there with the Life of Brian. Now there's a thought Jesus and Hitler the Bromance!!!! The critics totally wrong as always. I don't pay any attention to critics as they tend to be middle class social climbers who aren't good enough become directors or actors so they become critics.I would have loved to be at the premier as I would have been laughing my ass off along with that drunk woman.
I didn't think anyone could top Mr.Motstel but Nathan Lane was just as funny, He's funnier in person than in movies to me Mr. Lane is strictly broadway.
I loved the movie except for hippy Hitler so it's no wonder they switched it out in the musical. The musical itself worked great on stage but the filmed version of it wasn't so hot.
These seven parts interrupted my dinner. Thanks for a job well done!
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Wilder as part of a promotional tour. He was the most humble, gracious and delightful person.
Great documentary of one of the greatest movies ever! So many classic scenes so many classic lines😀
Mel says at 2:22 , as long as you have enough to eat and someone loves you , o.k. amen
All the wrong things that happened to me turned out to be great, except for cancer.
I couldn't help but laugh at that. We love you, Gene Wilder!

I not a fan of documentaries, but I'm glad I decided to watch the Making of the Producers. Thanks for posting it.
I am now reading Mel Brooks bio. Like all of his films, it's a laugh a page. I haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time. Don't miss it.
Uwielbiam wasze filmy i aktorstwo.

I just realized Max’s middle finger was sticking up in symbolism.
Is there a Making of The Producers 2005, the Broadway musical?
"Don't be dumb. Be a sparty. Come and join the Nazi Party!" Mel Brooks
Not to be annoying but, "Be a smarty"
He’s like a terrier 🐶
Um... Chaplin?
im just watching the new one, its great, but Will Farrel is the least funny thing about it.
+basscataz Exactly. So true. Now, I like Will Farrel. A LOT. I'm a big fan. But he just didn't "work" in that movie.
I loved the movie except for hippy Hitler so it's no wonder they switched it out in the musical. The musical itself worked great on stage but the filmed version of it wasn't so hot.
