Why is it that as a 65 year old from a non-urban environment and totally different musical background I feel such a strong musical kinship with what is coming out of this scene in London? Nubya, Shabaka, all the others, it's just great!
@@th3rdeyeopen I do very much try not to pigeon hole myself and keep my ears open to everything, but I feel an odd sort of actual kinship with this stuff...
Hard to know. One possibility is that - in a sense - jazz is a foreign language to any non-American, and they're going to speak it with a foreign accent. But that's not a weakness, and it can be a strength. People from other countries have listened to different pop music, they aren't tied to Black American musical roots, they have different cultural concerns, and they can and do bring a fresh perspective to the music. For a start, Britain is a whole lot closer to Africa, and there are plenty of genuine African musicians living and touring there. So you'll hear thing like Sons Of Kemet's ferocious rolling groove, that Americans wouldn't do the same way.
As the old folks used to say "She's been here before" If there is any doubt rather it's Jazz or not I submit for your perusal "Gil Scott Heron's album Reflections in which he answered the question very nicely...."Is that Jazz?"
Seems a lot of commenters haven't understood that "Is It Jazz?" is just the generic name of the series, of which this is one episode. It literally tells you that if you read the intro blurb.
@@buffplums I realised long ago that you can't say anything about anyone on the net (however well-meant) without somebody jumping on you. I'll probably even get flak for this. If only we could just enjoy great music.

JerryAttric42 Yes! Yes! I agree so am I sick of it. It’s music and it sounds good. Not just a lot of scales and patterns it’s more than just that it’s a song that’s created from your mind. It has a beginning and an end. I think people are forgetting that’s what music is. Stop trying to be someone one else and do your thing and stop trying to repeat the music that has been done. Nothing wrong with playing some of it but it seem to be all these so called jazz musicians want to do. She is being creative and exploring the unknown.
@@kazire4591 your comment seems somehow ironic to me. Back in the early 90's I overheard some dude talking trash about Redman at one of his early concerts. Saying he couldn't play and that there were countless players that were better. And today, Redman is held in high regard. It won't be long, Nubya will have her place.
Is it improvised art, is it played live in time, anybody who doesn't know the answer to these questions has NO place in art. Improvised art played live in time... Yeah man.. It's real jazz.....
@@justanoptimist303 it's a transitional model, I think... the bell keys are on either side of the bell, whereas a 10M has them both on the player's left. Lovely lovely horns.

Check out Ezra Collective, they make up a lot of her backing band a lot of the time. Femi Coliosso on drums. One of the best gigs, I've been to. If you want to check our similar stuff, also Yussef dayes, Alfa Mist, Henry Wu,
Jesus people need to learn the history of Jazz before questioning if something is Jazz. Jazz has tons of Sub genres and I'm sorry but "Smoorh Jazz"is a Sub genre and doesn't speak for all Jazz. She definitely sounds like Bebop to me.
Odd sound mixing decisions here. Sax is way too low, the snare dominates strangely , and the video ends up with her interview speaking voice often way louder than her sax playing. Great music though, thanks for that.
Am I taking crazy pills? I mean she's fine but straight up she's the weakest member of her ensemble by a mile. What's with all the hype? She's certainly decent, but yeah I get the jazz question...if she wants to rock the heads and leave it to others to improvise but very meh. Absolutely yes, take a listen to Dizzy's carrebean rythms, and the double Kenny Dorham-Joe Henderson albums...
Nubla Garcia faz lembrar John Coltrane! Fantástico som.
Yesterday (05-11)she was in Bird Rotterdam., she was great and also the other bandmembers, especially the double bassplayer
Of course it’s jazz the drummer has set the theme for various of things of jazz.
Fat tone on Tenor, lovely and great band Thanks for posting
That ”fat tone” used to be a trademark of old american made horns. That’s not to take anything away from Nubya’s unquestionable artistry.
Precise, sharp, clean, sometimes hypnotic. She is 20 and something ... let her grow.

Nubya has that ‘John Coltrane’ serious focused look to her ... she is so very talented!
My first thought as well - however, not only the look but also his sound (in the first piece).
Quel Qu'un you obviously don’t know much about jazz music then ....
Quel Qu'un you are a very uneducated person to come out with a comment like that, probably don’t even know who John Coltrane is

"If it sounds good, it IS good" (Duke Ellington)
