i was lucky to see Melvin GIBBS with Dave DOUGLAS ensemble in Hamilton at Something ELSE festival....a fantastic mixing of sounds and attitude , i am so keen to visit NYC and try to find a show with Harriet Tubman, so great a player and i am glad to hear this interview.

Seems a lot of commenters haven't understood that "Is It Jazz?" is just the generic name of the series, of which this is one episode. It literally tells you that if you read the intro blurb.

Heck noone can even deFINE Jazz. It is only the egocentric elitists who THINK they can. Is it working in upper structures? Is it the heavy use of "color" notes? Is it improvisation? Is it swing? Is it the bebop scale? NONE of these is exclusive to the "genre." Nor is any COMBINATION of these things. "Jazz" is just as diluted as everything ELSE!

6:50 there I have it; a free musical spirit. It's 2017. Now, 5 years later, everyone in this band went into their own thing. Yes, they will reunite. But by then, The Comet will have fallen. their last album, even very good, felt more like a montage to me than a real collaboration. I hope I'm wrong. The Ancestors, Kemet's and the Comet, for me. I hope not to loose another one ...

Jesus people need to learn the history of Jazz before questioning if something is Jazz. Jazz has tons of Sub genres and I'm sorry but "Smoorh Jazz"is a Sub genre and doesn't speak for all Jazz. She definitely sounds like Bebop to me.

Hard to know. One possibility is that - in a sense - jazz is a foreign language to any non-American, and they're going to speak it with a foreign accent. But that's not a weakness, and it can be a strength. People from other countries have listened to different pop music, they aren't tied to Black American musical roots, they have different cultural concerns, and they can and do bring a fresh perspective to the music. For a start, Britain is a whole lot closer to Africa, and there are plenty of genuine African musicians living and touring there. So you'll hear thing like Sons Of Kemet's ferocious rolling groove, that Americans wouldn't do the same way.

If it isn't jazz (and I would argue strongly that it is) then it is jazz's profound loss. Mr. Henry is and has been phenomenal since early childhood.
