I only wish I lived a bit closer but the cost and effort of the three day trip was well worth it as the memories are priceless. I also learned a lot about conditions and know the river is rarely that giving. Definitely need lots of rain and some low pressure for it to be so generous with big fish but I guess that’s what weather forecasts are for and, especially as the kids get older, you need to try and be flexible or opportunistic about when to head there. But it’s a stunning place even if the conditions and the fish don’t play ball.

@themagicoffishing thank you John, Christmas greetings in return. it's a ship canal fed from the Severn, 16 miles long, 16' deep, 30+ yds wide and plenty of big fish of all kinds, it was a big surprise to me, I fished it for 7 years and got to know just a few stretches. 🧔 👍

Thank you for a year full of wonderful fishing videos on TH-cam and for the beautiful book you wrote. I never thought I would enjoy fishing again after losing several of my friends over the past few years, who are sadly no longer here to join me by the water. Thanks to you, I have rediscovered the joy of being by the water's edge.

I couldn’t believe it when I looked behind me and it was sat there! It even allowed me to close the distance by about half when I decided I’d pushed my luck enough and took the footage without zooming in too much on my phone. It wasn’t too long after that when the late barbel nearly pulled the rod in, despite the bait runner being on! Cheers 🍻

Was another good video. The pegs you are fishing I've been in a few times but noticed they have changed the peg numbers at the top end were you are was 96 and holds some big barbel best I've had from them pegs was 15lb 14 on meat when it was well up but had a few doubles in the nice to see daytime barbel. Kia is very helpful and landed a few fish and photographed a few. Geoff who lives in the white house is helpful as well talked to him a few times when I've been there keep the videos coming

What an amazing day John, very well done Sir.👏💥 Real Trent Torpedos..! You know, i just love the B-roll you film and use, it really adds to the hole experience, makes me feel like i can almost smell the river environment. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s for that alone mate.. Can't wait for the next one.. 😊👍

    • @themagicoffishing
      @themagicoffishing  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Cheers mate. The Trent can be ridiculously scenic when the weather is right - which is interesting considering that many anglers think of it as a huge and almost industrial waterway with few bankside features. It’s true it can be a wide open venue and a little bit daunting when the wind is up, but on evenings like that one you can pretty much point the camera anywhere and get magic! As much as fishing for silvers is my favourite style of fishing, with my background in match angling, sitting it out for bigger fish definitely leaves your hands free for B roll a lot more!! Have a cracking Chrimbo and I enjoyed your latest release as always 🎣

Nice work on a few grayling from the Don today - in shocking weather! I was in Sheffield this morning, at my dad’s, and then drove over the Snake to see some of Rachel’s family in Manchester, and it was snowing over the Pennines. Derby tomorrow and then all the way back to Surrey for Christmas. Yep, it was a seriously good trip to Collingham and aside from getting very wet I was mega lucky with the conditions. Would love to get back next year…🤞 Have a great Xmas 🎅🏽

To catch a couple more biggies was the cherry on top. Do you know what, I think that jacket was a bit of a bargain on eBay! I wanted something for the spring and autumn when it’s not too chilly but you still need a wind proof outer layer in the evenings, if not all day, and it’s no particular brand but has served me well in the year or two I’ve had it. Well done John , two more cracking barbel from the tidal Trent. You certainly caught the river when it was well up for your three day trip and bagged up big time. Having watched your video of the previous day when you fished peg 41 and did so well, I fished peg 41 on one day of my four day trip to the Trent in mid October. Sadly the river had fallen a lot since you were there and I did not have a single bite all day even into almost darkness. From the peg No sign it was a good ten yards down to the water and , as I said, not a single touch all day. That’s fishing,

Gutted for you mate, but really appreciate the comment and the fact you’ve had a go 😎 Conditions are (almost) everything with barbel as you say and I got very lucky 🍀 Also very wet 😄 You will get lucky in the future I’m sure and the Conveyor Belt field (my first vid from there) is supposed to be good in lower water… 👍🎣🐟 Again, small particles and almost constant recasting with the feeder. If you saw my vid at Gunthorpe earlier in the year you’ll know I’m not immune to blanks (and indeed on the Thames) either, but as you’ll know, they make the red letter days all the sweeter! Have a good Christmas 🎅🏽

Tight lines for your fur & feather event and may the fish be biting, even in the cold. Have a great Christmas 🎄

I hope to fish the Trent for barbel one day but it's difficult because I don't drive. As a resident of Yorkshire, I've fished the Wharfe, Swale, Nidd and Ure (some of which you may be familiar with as a Yorkshireman, John) for barbel, with varying degrees of success. I have a couple of days guided barbel fishing on the Wye next August, which is my treat to myself to celebrate my 60th birthday.

That is a brilliant birthday gift to look forward to and the Wye has been on my target list for a while as well. I know it’s suffering from all kinds of pollution in places but is still supposed to be one of our top barbel rivers. Perhaps surprisingly, I’m still to fish many of the well known Yorkshire rivers, as I so often headed south from Sheffield, but maybe this channel will give me incentive to try one day… Thanks for a great comment.

Fished that same area 2 weeks ago in the middle of storm Darragh!! We had to bail out after my brollie literally exploded …. Kai was in shorts!!!

Never?! I suspect that man never wears anything else 😂 And I very nearly shared the experience with you - saw the massive weather coming in and actually texted a mate in Sheffield to see if he fancied a wild couple of days but it’s 3 hours each way for me from Surrey these days and something came up. Nice work for braving the elements!! 👏

Fantastic video John, what a river the Trent is, by the way did you know that the kestrel is no longer our most common bird of prey, it’s now the buzzard as the kestrels are declining at an alarming rate, so sad

Thank you Martin and, no, I didn’t realise that although I see a fair few buzzards around Surrey (along with red kites) and that was the first kestrel I’d seen up close for a long time. I was hunting along the banks all afternoon that day and I couldn’t believe it when I turned round and saw it perched on the post behind me in the slanting evening sun. Knowing that fact makes it all the more special 💙

Hmmmm, not sure I’m afraid but there are some really good instructions on the Collingham AA website about finding the place (which I used for my first trip), along with some great tips on how to fish it - collinghamaa.co.uk/

Who, other than a thrifty Yorkshireman, buys himself birthday presents "marcharley6465" aka "Yorkshire John" 😳 ?? ... I've heard that Yorkshiremen don't catch many Barbel because they don't like spending much money on bait, therefore they use swimfeeders which have no holes in them so that not a single maggot can escape 😳😳!!.....
    Just joking 😂😂❤🎣👍 lol

LOL, I’ve not heard the feeder with no holes before 😂 🎣🐟 Will have to give that a try… 🤔😄 Cheers 🍻

Stop waffling and get the fish back in.

Steve, what I don’t show is the fish having a good rest before I show it to the camera and a good rest afterwards. That’s a given for me and it was out the water for a minute as I celebrate the special capture with viewers. Every fish I caught that trip was treated with the same respect and swam off strongly. If you don’t like my vids and all the effort I put into making and sharing them (for free) you don’t have to watch them. Try someone else’s waffle or give it a go yourself and you’ll realise it’s bloody hard work that maybe deserves some nice words. I totally respect your desire to see fish looked after but I can promise you they are.

@@themagicoffishing I accept you rest your fish and look after them. My point is that holding a fish up to camera for over a minute(not including setting up and down) is not necessary. You try holding your breath for over a minute and see how that makes you feel. You could(and others do) narrate over a still picture of yourself displaying the fish, it minimises time out of the water and still leaves you the opportunity to celebrate. I have no desire to make fishing vids. That doesn't diminish my point about fish welfare.
