  • Just Bought This Bertram 35 in San Francisco and was taking it down to San Pedro to her new home. This video was taken right when we left the Golden Gate Bridge and about the first few miles the water got nasty, however it was a good shakedown to see what the boat would do in choppy water. She handled great as a matter of fact.

YOU MADE IT BACK TO PORT SAFE IN MY BOOK THATS A JOB WELL DONE ! MOST OF THE PEOPLE MAKING THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS I BET NEVER EVEN OWNED A BOAT OR SKIPPERED ONE . There is something very therapeutic about (vicariously) sitting in the cockpit with you as you steam through the ocean. I feel your pain as you hit every big swell, and (strangely) wish I was there! Ha ha! Thanks for the video! 🙂

Nice old 35 there, solid boat... Sounds like 555's / Triple Nickels.

With 50 years on the Great Lakes, on a 118' yacht, a 700 ore carrier, and other size vessels and yachts, I would agree that is a tough sea. Also, they are "confused" seas, not nicely on the bow. I am surprised the skipper did not change course to bow on for the bigger seas, though. Great video for sure...but four years old now (2017). Plus he running "slow". That hull loves to run the seas!

Now I don't have to post what I was going to. LOL
Sometimes you don't get to go the direction you want to go, even in a sportfish. At least quarter the seas for a while, then swap quarters until you get to where you're going or the seas calm down. Inexperienced capt.

Lot's of keyboard captains on here commenting not knowing the circumstances. Here in Donegal we don;t call that rough, more uncomfortable. At times it's better to give it some wellie and keep her head up, but only if you are in the position to do so. We once put a leg out in a much heavier Northwesterly and we were only making 7-8knts in our Cyfish 33, not pleasant but she tooks us to dafety. This captain had to work with what he had and he took it nice and handy for that reason. Awesome boats those Bertrams!

To bad the capt didn't use the hulls abilities, he let her wallow in the seas. Use some throttle next time.

I have a Bertram 31 in the SF Bay. Those are "rough" seas that appear to be exacerbated by coming out of the ship channel and heading south across the South Bar. If you're ever in the Bay Area again, you'll have a nicer ride heading all the way out to the end of the ship channel and then heading south. Uncomfortable, but never in doubt in a Bertram!

  • @MachTuck

Seems to me he could lick it up a bit and have a nicer ride! Bert 33 true sportfish owner here, Love Bert's especially the older ones, I own a 77 model 33 SF and a 69 offshore hull early Bert's have been my favorite for many years. Reliable always and always maintained well. Lol cannot afford New ones!

That's "smooth" for that section of ocean. Sounds like 6-71's doing about 1100rpm. Should have tried getting up on plane. Bertrams deep V's are known for enjoying fast in rough.

+trucking604 To all those who thought i was a pussy with the throttle... let me explain... The boat has triple nickle cummins. V555 and one cylinder had a hole in it but it ran good enough at a slower speed (under 2k RPMS) to get me home. I would of loved to romp on it right there but i had only known the boat less than a couple hours and i had a long way to go..(try that sometime) Nevertheless it made it all the way home and when i got there i replaced the sleeves on the stbd engine and replaced all the injectors on both engines and it has been purring like a kitten for over two years now and i go out every weekend. the engines now have 4000 hours on the hour meters but the one i did the inline is a little newer. I love this boat... very good mileage and safe.

Jeff you did everything exactly right here...you don't go blasting thru seas like this even if ur plants are in perfect condition...these people on here who say go fast don't know what they are talking about...doesn't
matter how great ur boat is and the Bert 35 is one of if not the best out there...!! I am looking at one right now with 3208s in it though.
