Your tutorial videos are always so clearly demonstrated and explained. For those of us that don’t shoot nearly as much as you, these videos are solid gold. No complicated BS, no trickery. Just straight up useful information. Thanks Nathan!
Woah this is so wild!! Not sure if you remember but we worked together back in 2004 before you moved to Calgary, and this was a suggested video for me and I had to do a double take! Glad to see you're thriving and photography has been working out for you so well! Nice to see you again. The video is great too, I'll sub!
2:46 Thanks Nathan, these are so good and the tips are much appreciated. Gearing up to take my studio work to the next level and i love 1 light setups. (as you can guess). Thanks for your contribution to the craft and industry. Love
Thank you so much. Really helpful you talked about angles and where to position light/ objects. Challenges I've had in past was being told "oh you sorta place the light here", which is harder to recreate... so i appreciate you giving more guidance.
With the optical snoot shots it looks like you have a lot of room ambient fill - very clear from the pullback shot at 5:56. So results are going to vary a lot depending on ones ambient room lighting. If you have a dark studio you may need an extra fill light to get similar looks.
Great images and results, thank you for the video. Please put something on the boom arm end to prevent anyone catching it and taking an eye out, I use tennis balls myself.. saved my eyes many times 🤣
Love this video. I have definitely use aleast two of these in most of my shoot. But definitely will be giving the last set up a go next time great video Nathan 👏🏾🙌🏾
As always, dense, pragmatic, straight to the point and so amazing, beautiful, and inspiring Art photography and outstanding teaching. I love your 1,2,3 lights concept that revisits tranversally, in a new & very interestning way, ideas exposed in prior videos.
That was a very understandable explanation of how to use one light for portraits ! Definitely helped a lot ! and i cant wait to try those set ups as well ! Thank you !!!
Great video and awesome photos Nathan! I got rid of my optical snoot (similar to the one you are using) and got a Nanlite Forza 60 (there's the option of the Nanlite FS60B for those on a budget) and their Projection Unit for the Forza 60 or 150 (the ones with the fm mount) The optical Snoot eats too much power and it was a bit of a hassle, the WYSIWYG of the led light and no loss of power output (in fact it magnifies it)
@@NathanElson That's great Nathan! If I may recommend check the Forza 60 and the 150 too, the only downside is that the fm to bowens adapter can't hold the weight of softboxes larger than 90cms, but I'm having too much fun with their projection unit and their fresnel for the Forza 60/150!
Nathan, I thought this was a great video. Some of us don't have a studio but do have a small collection of modifiers. For us, this was a useful video, for sure. I will of course watch your next more elaborate lighting videos, but this is likely to be the one that is most valuable to me. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for doing these videos and sharing your knowledge. All The images are amazing. The image on the right @9:21 is deadly!! Will take time to absorb all this wealth of information. Hopefully won't take TH-cam 8 hours to notify me on the next parts.
Great videos! I've been enjoying learning from your content! I'm actually in the process of opening my first studio. Do you have any must have items that you could recommend?
Hi I’m just getting into photography I really love and admire this page and work how does the light trigger? Is it an accessory that attaches to the camera, does it come with the light? Sorry for new be question!
I am new to off camera lights. For the overhead light and most shot, is the overhead light the main key light? Or continuous lighting? And I see flashlights popping in the video, are they coming from a flash behind you?
What's up my dude thank you so much for sharing your lighting tips I would love it if you would talk a little bit about your lights as well what you use why use them overheating problems etc.. don't have to make a full video on it but would you recommend some lights
yoo !! this is sick! What would you say youre settings typically are here? I am new to the studio session world and have been using a dynalight and pocket wizard to have the fkash be connected. Just wondering what your typical ISO/Shutter/F stop would be looking like ? :) thanks for all the help!!!!!!!
You mentioned you moved your optical snoot about 10 feet back…what if the shoot location doesn’t allow you to move the light back that far, would you still be able to use the snoot?
Hi, Nathan! Great video. Thanks for sharing. Just curious what light was in the optical snoot. I don't really care about the brand name, just the lights power output capability (ie. 500w/s or 1000w/s). Is it also the Godox AD600 Pro? Thanks again.
Very inspireing video. Starting out, would you get one high quality strope like AD600 pro and later add more AD600s. Or would you for the same price buy 3 cheap ones? I have cheap speedlights, cheap stands and triggers, and it isn't verey relyable. So I'm looking at upgrading.
I feel like you've already answered your own question :) Reliability is everything when it comes to gear, and that is what you pay for. I would take one AD600 over 10 cheap lights 100% of the time. Not only that, the AD600 is so much more versatile in regards to modifiers and power output. Spend your money wisely, get better gear, and add to it as you can.
I may be blind here but where is the flash coming from? I have 1 light, Godox SL60 and the and the Neewer Z1. This one light setup will suit me better for now but I struggle in positioning the speedlight.

That's solid. I have a Forza 500 and a bunch of the pavotubes. Great lighting, I will have a look at the Forza 60 as well.

In studio I am usually at f/8, ISO 100, 1/200th of a sec

1:45 without a grid, we can aim the line with the softbox curve also
100%
After this series, could you do series of videos lighting groups in the studio. Most videos on TH-cam is always focused on on shooting an individual.
Solid idea, thanks!
I may be blind here but where is the flash coming from? I have 1 light, Godox SL60 and the and the Neewer Z1. This one light setup will suit me better for now but I struggle in positioning the speedlight.
