  • At least 264 suspected gang members in Haiti have been killed by vigilante groups since April, the UN representative in the violence-wracked country said Thursday, voicing concern at the trend. Haitian police have been unable to quell the unprecedented violence by gangs that control much of the capital Port-au-Prince, and residents have begun to take matters into their own hands.

It's interesting that they didn't do much when the gangs were terrorizing the citizens. But now that it's the citizens terrorizing the gangs, it's a problem and something needs to be done about it.

This is not a worrying phenomena. It's a very sound strategy. There's a very famous picture, from the gold rush days, of criminals hanging in downtown San Francisco. Things were very bad, with the authorities letting criminals do as they pleased. After vigilantes hung a good few law and order was restored, and decent folk were safe again.

Yeah, about that San Francisco incident. People took over City Hall and held trials. They appointed judges, called witnesses, and followed due process.

Haiti has received 12 billion usd since 2009 as foreign aid from different western countries. Plus each year haitians receive 2.5 billion to 3 billion usd as remittance from different countries, primarily usa, canada, and France. In fact foreign aid and remittance make up 30% of Haitian gdp.
      How much they need still?

You have to understand the term “ Foreign Aid “……. This so called help is only on paper….the majority of the aid is re-funneled back to the Politicians who voted for it…..it’s a big Scam……

Instead of foreign occupiers the government should regulate these groups as state sponsored militias. Local defense will always be better than small contingents from wealthy countries. Expanding the armed forces would likely lead to demands for political change ending in popular revolution or dictatorship. But both option seem better than the current anarchy.
