    It‘s cool to see someone finally making a understandable guide on how to undervolt!
    After undervolting my 2080ti the fans were basically inaudible because of how much the temperature dropped, but that also introduced me to the terrible coilwhine those cards have...
    Weirdly enough it helped taking off the backplate?! This seems to be a common solution for Turing cards from EVGA

    • @ANOVII2
      @ANOVII2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Just taking off the backplate made the coil whine go away !?!

    • @philipps4322
      @philipps4322 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Anime Thighs Save Lives Yes! I read about it on reddit and thought I might as well give it a shot before I RND my card the third time because of terrible noise and it reduced the whine massively. While gaming you can‘t really hear it anymore over the fans and AIO pump noise of my CPU
      I have the EVGA 2080ti XC2 Ultra

    • @ANOVII2
      @ANOVII2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Philipp S I have the same exact card. I’ll look into it. So freaking annoying the noise is but as long it runs good, I don’t mind it. Gonna sell it either way when or if the 3080ti comes out.

    I would like to add some advice that I was given on Reddit that may help others. start by resetting your GPU settings in MSI AB to stock. Maintain the curve as you adjust points (the slope that is set by default) on the f/v graph by holding CTRL when making adjustments. lock the voltage at points along the f/v curve by selecting a point, then pressing L. To test a lower voltage at the same frequency, hold CTRL while you increase the frequency of a lower point on the curve, then lock voltage at that point. This netted me a 100mhz increase in core frequency stable under load @ .913v. in particular, the curve of the graph as it reaches its max frequency at a given voltage is important to the result (which is why I suggest holding CTRL while making adjustments)

    Got my MSI 2080 Duke from 1050mV down to 925mV, dropped 6-7C. Still holds strong at 1960-1980MHz and I was able to make the fans run slower too. You are an absolute legend!
    Few things I had to do in order to make everything work, enable voltage monitoring and voltage control in the Afterburner settings. Once you find that minimum stable voltage point on the graph, press L to 'lock' the GPU to that voltage, then press apply. I had to do this to get the voltage to drop, not pressing L and pressing apply would not lower my voltage. Looks like this makes the gpu stay at 925mV even when not under load, pressing L may not be the correct solution but I couldn't make my voltage lower any other way. Applying the locked profile, then unlocking it and applying it again made it work like in the video.
    TL;DR Enable voltage control in Afterburner and try using L to lock/unlock the voltage if yours wont change.

    BTW The HBM memory voltage on Vega is not what you set it to, it is locked by BIOS to 1.1 on V56 and 1.35 on V64. What you set in Wattman when you edit the memory voltage is the Voltage Floor at which the HBM power state applies to the Core. IE if your power state number 5 on the GPU Core is at 1050 mV, and you set memory P3 voltage floor at 1100 mV, the memory power state will start applying past core state 5 and force the voltage to be 1100 mV.
    It basically tells the Core voltage when it should go from its stock power state of 800 (V56) or 945 (V64) to whatever you set manually on the memory.
    Bit confusing, and especially now that Adrenalin 2020 removed the ability to force a min power state it can be tricky to get your HBM OC to apply when gaming.

    Fantastic guide!
    Also, for those who are wandering if Vega 56 can overclock while being undervolted, I'll suggest to try this values:
    800mv until P4 then 900, 950, 1050 for the boost P state.
    Leave the stock clocks unchanged, set only the boost at 1667 mhz. This way it will boost around 1640~1700mhz.
    Power limit must be at +15%.
    PS: it will not work at all with other values, only the boost clock can be changed, down.
    For the hbm, it depends on the manufacturer, I use 960mv and 960mhz, this values will guarantee that the overclock on the memory is actually used.

Was able to undervolt -100mV on a single fan EVGA 2060 which was always bouncing off the 83C temp target & throttling (unless I manually locked fan RPM at 95% or higher) After undervolting it now maxes around 80-81C and maintains a slightly higher clock than before, Core clock usually sits 1905Mhz while playing Days Gone at 99% GPU utilization / max gfx settings / 120fps cap, I was so used to seeing the PerfCap readout in GPU-Z showing Thermal triggers during gaming but now it always sits Idle! Turns out some time ago when I had no idea what these tools really do I ran OC scanner on my 1080Ti and it set a low voltage at one specific frequency. Ever since then I've had completely random crashes in games and I couldn't pinpoint anything (Drivers, hardware, software). Furmark hit the power limit and stayed under the bugged frequency so it could burn for hours with no issue. Some games ran perfectly (Halo MCC) and some crashed within minutes (black mesa). That single bugged frequency/voltage point has been a thorn in my side for like 6 MONTHS. I even returned Borderlands 3 because I thought the game was badly made. Also my 1080Ti is now 49c while gaming, noice.

    Using a Sapphire Nitro+ RX5700XT, I sightly lowered from 1.35v to 1.1v and the frequencies are more smooth, most of the time 2043/2051 temp are lower such as power draw. It seems to be the sweet spot. I didn't try to move lower since I'm very happy with this setting. Thank's for your help.

    • @kristjanlorents6505

      @AmpEdition I think I'm still going to buy it not worth to buy the 2060 super as it's the same price as the 5700xt, and there are a lot of solutions already that fix some of the issues.
      Also Nvidia have been known for ending support on many of their products earlier than AMD, so I wouldn't call it future proofing, many of the problems can be simply solved if you have an understanding of how the BIOS of your motherboard and windows functions, simply not worth the 2060 purchase, drivers will mature and the problems will be solved. At the end of the day when the drivers are at their peak it will eventually beat even the 2070 super, I mean look at the benchmarks the 5700xt already wins in Battlefield 5.

      @AmpEdition Alright my 5700xt arrived today, no issues performance is near 2070 super level, compared with my friend my setup even wins in some games, running latest drivers no issues at all.

    From 1044 mV -> 906 mV @ 1875 MHz
    Was able to lower fan speed to 40% (the minimum for my founders edition card) while at full load.
    Temps during Heaven + Cinebench R23 @ 76-77 C, which is fine for me as I care more about noise.

    One thing I'd suggest to add if you ever update this for the 40 series and RDNA3 cards is to add a quick walk-through for editing the fan curve in Afterburner; doing so is not as obvious as you'd think in the latest version of Afterburner.

    undervolting my gpu helps alot it lowers heat, noise, and power consumption. I can deal with a bit of lowered performance. I usually dont mess with any afterburner settings in my previous gpus but when I bought my current rtx 2070 super I just can't ignore the heat the noise and the power consumption compared to the gtx10s series. Good video and advise regarding undervolting, I wish I knew this sooner.

I have undervolted to 800mV (and underclocked it to ~1750Mhz) and lost 6deg from peak temperature, but more importantly peak fan speed dropped from 81% to 62% during Unigine Heaven benchmark. GPU temperature has drop 8 degrees Celsius in same conditions /ambient temperature as well as the power consumption has dropped atleast 25 watts. Finally, be sure to test with tessellation at maximum for insuring stability in tessellation dependent games .

    For anyone trying undervolt/overclock your Vega 56/64 card, DON'T use the AMD Driver undervolting, it doesn't work on certain cards, for me it changed absolutely nothing in undervolting but it does overclock.
    Use OverdriveNTool, download the newest version and set up a profile and only change the voltage of the last two p-states.
    I managed to get 1570mhz on 894mv easily, also don't let your Hotspot temp go over 105c

    [RX460 bios modded to RX560] Nice video with your tips i could improve my old UV/OC. Another thing that i noticed is when trying to optimize the memory controller voltage (keep core freq under 1Ghz ) HWINFO will show (GPU Aux Voltage VDDCI) if your target is 800mV but the card floors it at 875mV. Later when setting the P7 the IMC automatically go up to 950mV if needed, even if 875mV is your setting. My modded card has a softpowertable to increase min voltage from 715mV to 731mV; P7:1297mHz@1150mV P6:1249@1056mV P5:1200@994mV Memory: 2000mhz the card is powered from just the PciEx.

    The thing about undervolting, the fans will actually get louder because they ramp up later..unless you have a manual fan curve but i undervolted my vega 64 and dropped like 10c on synthetic benchmarks. The voltage for p6 and p7 was 1100mv and 1200mv. I undervolted p1-p7. I got p7 and p6 almost 100mv lower. Freaking amazing. p6 and p7 were at 1520 and 1630 with the voltages lowered and i got a +50 on the core clock with a memory overclock of 1100 mhz on the hbm2. If i want overall lower temps i could lower the hbm back to 945 but with the 1100mhz i get like +3 frames lol
    other than that i get near 1080ti performance and a little around 2070 performance. Got to fine tune it a little more
    also, use msi afterburner. It's more simple, and i find it applies better. WIth the power limit slider up if you want to lower the overall amount of power the card uses, lower the core voltage a tad and try again. lowers my temps about 5c

    Use the max *stable offset* for core clocks without adding any voltage.
    Then go to 1050mV or 1075mV and add 25~50mhz *depending on whats stable on your card* and enjoy the higher boost clocks.
