When I was a kid, we used to jeat our house with wood. We'd go down in the woods and cut up dead standing trees and haul it up to pack it into the basement for winter. We would always find huge fat grub worms in old oak trees. I haven't seen a worm like those in so long. It must be almost 40 years. Not little ones like yours, Phil. Love that Olive!
Hi Phil the Californias Olive wood is really lovely it has beautiful grain and colour the bark is nice. The bowl is magnificent and unique it looks nice with the bug holes and the cracks it has amazing character. You are a masterwoodturner and have brilliant skill. Thank you for a fabulous video. Amanda xx
Another beautious piece, Phil. I think the bug holes are an act of nature and tell a bit of the history of the piece. Glad you left then in and not filled.
Got my Thursday evening Shady Acres fix on Friday evening. Huge blizzard kept me plowing and shovelling til late last evening. Lovely job and lovely wood, for sure. Thanks for sharing, Phil.
Olive is fun to turn and yours is art, didn't know about bugs 😢 sorry...just wait for next piece ,spoiler alert, rotted out pith and hard as all get out 😂. Nice one Phil Take care be safe Dennis
Live Meat ! ! ! Pop'em on the griddle or eat them "Quigley Down Under" style! I prefer mine, soaked in and then with a shot of Mescal. Yumm, Yummy! Such a beautiful, wavy grain of the heartwood and the odd shape it forms, inside the bowl. Another winner (larvae dinner), Phil!
Hi 👋, Phil from Phil, that is some great looking 👀 grain, Artwork, I been back again to the Uk , one of my friends new someone selling some tools, I picked up 24/5 Crown wood turning tools, and a curved tool rest, Nice job Phil , keep up the great work, from the moulin.
Olive is just gorgeous! I would love to have a short section in a video that compares different types of wood in your turnings. The Vegas olive and the CA olive especially.
I just received a pretty nice pile of Chestnut from a friend who needed some some spindle work done. The grain colors almost looks like the Heartwood of that olive wood. Waiting on it to dry is the hardest part. Happy turning my friend ☺️. Awesome piece 👍
Hi Phil. Am at minute 7. I am accustomed to you using the 1.5 inch flat scraper in curved hollow areas. Am used to seeing you use your gouge to sheer-scrape. Cool We're getting a few inches of snow at the moment in low wind conditions. Nice fluffy snow falling slowly. Peaceful night. Back to the video. ...Lovely, graceful shape. Like a wave.
Howdy Phil👋👋 my 7 yr old son finally watched some of your turning videos with me. So many questions. He also thinks your wood lathe runs on magical gas... not electricity. I said it all depends on what Phil had for dinner my boy.
Another great turning Phil, that is really remarkable grain and the bug holes are just a part of the history of this piece of wood, really enjoyed this one. All the best to you. Regards Jim
Living in Central California I am surrounded by olive orchards (Lindsey Olives is about 40 miles away). However it is not easy to get ahold of pieces unless you are there when a tree falls or they are removing to build homes. Love turning it and the smell is very nice like cooking with olive oil. The whole shop smells wonderful.
Wow! The grain on this piece is so nice! At about the 6:40 mark, there was an eye looking out from the piece into the camera, too cool. You're an artist Phil, a true artist!!👍🙂
I paused the video there, trying to decide what is staring out at us. I think either a bird or a rabbit, with the color going up and left being the beak or ears.
Hi Phil Late commenting this week, in the Dominican for some sun and relaxation. Fantastic grain inside and out with bug holes for decoration, what could be better. As always beautiful work. Take care Bob
