That's amazing Scott I Bess test my knives just for fun and to see where I'm at on them when sharpening and I have never got numbers that low. Thanks for showing this I probably would have had doubts if not seeing this but dam looks good to me. I'm pretty amazed it held an edge that keen so well also. Props nice job.
I have been using the same BESS tester by Sharp and I totally agree with you - just a bit of stopping with Gunny Juice makes a sharp edge a stunninly popping sharp edge with little time and effort needed to be invested into stropping. I did learn from experience that the technique used with the BESS testing equipment does strongly influence the score but the SLOW pressure test is definitely the most difficult to get a low score with.

Wow! I can regularly get between 100-110 on my Bess by hand on stones. Once even got a 48, but haven't been able to repeat that. To get 6 or 7 just is incredible. That's lightsaber territory. The force is strong in this one. You must not have even been able to feel that cut. You may want to just set that knife aside for show off purposes. :-)

To be fair the knife was probably around 150 or so when I started. It was sharp just not as sharp as I wanted. I had this one set aside for awhile, but couldn’t help myself and I carried it for a bit. So it’s nowhere near that. I was just curious how long it would last being really sharp. I have cut all kinds of things and haven’t tested again yet. It’s still sharp though. Not sure if it’s sub 100 anymore. I will have to test it.

I've tried other guided sharpeners like the Spyderco Sharpmaker and now I'm seriously considering the TSprof system with some Venev stones. Finally after many months of trying I can get a decent edge by hand, but still not consistent enough, so the guided systems are very appealing. What a rabbit hole! Only recently found your videos and am getting a lot of great info from them. Thanks for doing all these.

Never seen low double digits. Way to go! Question, coming off my 800/1200 Venev for stropping, I've got your 1 micron Gunny Juice you recommended. Also have the basswood and 3M micropore tape. Would you recommend applying your 1 micron both with and without the tape to compare, or is with tape the way to go? Thanks!
It works both ways. The main advantage of the tape is that it easily allows you to refresh a strop by just replacing the tape when it can’t be reloaded anymore

Nice work man, that puppy has a good edge on it. I have gotten some low numbers too (probably dumb luck) however even after the slightest use the front end sharpness really died off quickly and the bess number really shot up. I had a manix 2 in s110v around 20-25 bess that would double or more after one slice through thin cardboard, still very sharp and held an edge for what seemed like forever however that follow up number with the M390 is impressive. If I remember correctly the clips register a little differently and you have to multiply x 1.2 to get the correct numbers but that really isn't adding much to the overall score in your case.

And when I tested after cutting I expected it to be in the 20’s or 30’s. Holt was really spot on with this heat treatment. When using the other you can pull it so tight that it’s ready to break. I have both. Maybe I should go back and test it on that too. I have to find the spool because I don’t use it often. Did you hear Vadim passed away?

Yeah you can really alter the results with the other one if it's over tightened / too taught. Would be interested to see how they compare, I made a weighted clamp out of surgical pliers and weighted tape to try and make as consistent as possible when fixing the line in the jig. Also been searching high and low to find a filament that replicates the line from them.

@@dcuttingedge5422 go through your progression on the stones. Then go back and start with your second stone and go through it one more time. Then lower your angle when stropping by about 1/2 a degree

I sharpened and resharpened the D2 knife three times and averaged around 200 BESS every time. My Spyderco P3 with S30V is around 140 BESS and seems to get sharper and sharper with the right stropping. Whittles hair. My thought is to stay away from the cheap D2 stuff and get another Spyderco to play with. Thank you!
With the Gunny Juice stropping emulsions it depends on what your highest grit stone is. The Glide is the graphene based lubricant. I don’t in the EU at the moment but I do in the UK
IM SORRY YOU GOT WHAT SCORE?!?! I thought I was finally getting good results getting numbers like 60-100... But that's beyond insane. This literally redefines what I thought was possible. Also, is there a possibility of seeing 0.05 micron gunny juice being able to be available? I have 9 micron down 0.1. although I mainly go 1 micron to 0.1 micron.

@@MrMZaccone I used 1x6 CBN resin bonded stones 80, 150, 240, 500, 1k and 1,500. Then an Edge Pro Diamond Matrix 4k which is about 5 micron. Then a Venev F1200 which is 3/2 micron. From there Gunny Juice 1, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.1 micron. I finished with my personal stash of 0.025 micron Gunny Juice. And I happened to have a really good day sharpening that day. Could I duplicate it? Depends on the day. Everytime? No. Sometimes? Yes

I don’t know about world record. It surprised me. I was just in the zone that day. I would say that level of sharpness is pretty rare. For me or anyone else. 🤷♂️

An objective, positive comment on the test. Edge On Up describes the test is not accurate for too fast movement. They describe the movement must last at least 4-6 seconds, from when the display starts counting grams and you must be able to read the numbers pretty much from gram to gram. I have seen a video where someone shows that with fast movement you can get low gram views. He has the purpose of the video to show that the tester is not truthful. I tried to time your lowering of the blades from the first number appeared until the string breaks, ~ 2 seconds and the one time the movement is jerky, ie the speed is higher. The clip holder is not in the middle of the scale and stands up against the plate, which with the friction can lead to lower test numbers. The clips are not verified/certified and are not produced by Edge On Up. The clips are not mounted with the same media/string as the holder with the wire roll and show 20% better tests than the verified/certified one. The challenge with the Edge On Up tester is that it is very sensitive. It is difficult to carry out a movement of 4-6 seconds at a steady speed. You have A tester. That tester has a high sensitivity of 1 gram. When testing the dark knife, it shows what I can manage to read in the 2 seconds until the string breaks, 28, 73, 144, maybe a few more numbers and you can't manage to read most of the numbers on the display, as described by Edge On Up, so your movement is faster than Edge On UP requires to get a valid view. There is no doubt that the knives are sharpened sharp and are probably made of high end class steel. I don't get your whole grinding method beyond cbn wheels up to 1500, but you seem to be an experienced grinder. SchliefJunkies has made a setup with a spindle that allows him to move the knife vertically at a steady speed. It is probably more something along the lines of what you would have to test to get a valid result, but it is cumbersome. I got the A tester this year and practice the movement. I haven't used the clip holder that much, so I don't know if it matters if the clip holder is in the center. With the second holder, which is larger in diameter, the centering matters. If it touches the plate, the display counts when the knife tip is placed on the support. The friction between the holder and the plate affects the display.
To me the BESS is not the end all be all testing method. And can vary from machine to machine. It’s one tool to give you an idea of something being sharp. It tests the beginning of a cut it doesn’t test overall cutting performance. Sharpness testing has so many variables that are impossible to account for everything. There’s a reason that I don’t post BESS scores very often. It can give me an idea of certain aspects. There are many ways to test cutting performance. I just checked this because it seemed sharper than average. I personally don’t care about the score. This wasn’t a “look at me and look what I can do test.” It had more to do with the debate that a “ really sharp edge doesn’t hold”. That’s why I did the second test. I wasn’t trying for a low BESS score to begin with. I just happened to freehand a nice edge and was curious. I am not running around bragging about the score. I am more impressed that the edge held up pretty well. Can I try to get a lower score and go even slower? Maybe. Do I care to? No. I am not trying to prove anything specific about my sharpening skills or lack there of either way. I am not timing my test. If you want to time one for yourself by all means please do. And share your results. This channel is about helping other people with tips on sharpening. I never intended for this to be about me. I am not trying to impress everyone with how great I am. I am an average guy that’s been sharpening my whole life. I have gained knowledge that I try to share. I don’t claim to know everything or that I am the best. Don’t try to read too much into this. I wasn’t trying to show off. I was curious with a particular edge and shared that. It’s that simple. I did a second video because I was curious about some things. If you do a test and count seconds and do better please share the video with a link so others that are wanting to know more about the BRESS please do. And I am not being condescending in case it seems that way. I am about truth of information. So if you have a video to share I am completely open to allowing that here. I read your reactions to questions about the test of the fine high quality knives you publish, obviously not being equally received as objective, positive or curious. It must be assumed that you have a desire and a purpose for showing the video. You seem surprised and impressed and want to share that the test of your high quality class level knives shows an unusually low Bess score and want to share it on fb and You Tube. This may result in comments. If questions can be raised about the quality of the test. I apologize for my inappropriate comment on the quality of your performance of your test and perceive that my skepticism in following the manufacturer's caveat regarding the quality of the test medium's use is not significant in that test. I read your reactions to questions about the test of the fine high quality knives you publish, obviously not being equally received as objective, positive or curious. It must be assumed that you have a desire and a purpose for showing the video. You seem surprised and impressed and want to share that the test of your high quality class level knives shows an unusually low Bess score and want to share it on fb and You Tube. This may result in comments. If questions can be raised about the quality of the test. I apologize for my inappropriate comment on the quality of your performance of your test and perceive that my skepticism in following the manufacturer's caveat regarding the quality of the test medium's use is not significant in that test.
