This song represents to me the most important part of love that people don’t want to deal with. If you truly truly love someone you must be willing to let the person go. Talking from experience when my ex broke up with me I put up a fight but once I knew I couldn’t make her happy I let her go with love. When you let someone go so they find there happiness you’re going to feel that Knott in your stomach walking away with love only brings you a rewards one she might realize her mistake or two you find someone better. A little late to the party here, but something I really like about the song (aside from the fact that both Carly and Lee sound fantastic) is how smartly it's written. Generally the phrase "I Hope You're Happy Now" can be interpreted either as genuine or more bitter and sarcastic, and the genius of the chorus is that in this song it's both depending on who's singing. From her side it's completely genuine and on his side it definitely strikes me as more bitter and snarky with lines like "I guess my heart ain't worth it anymore." Breakups are complicated and bring out a lot of complex emotions, and I think this song does a phenomenal job at showing that.
I see it as the girl just moved on easily, assumed he did as well too maybe? And he’s taking it as the end of the world kinda thing. I guess I relate to that personally so I’m “looking for it” in songs. Still hurts after 13 years and hearing songs like this where she’s moved on and he’s still hurting really just smacks me right in the feels
