Great review, I have both Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm with SW movement and Tudor Black Bay 58 black dial version. I know the Tudor has so much more hype surrounding it, but I reach for my Oris much much more than the Tudor every day.

I have the Aquis with the cherry dial, and I absolutely love it.
Oris watches look far more luxurious than any Tudor out there.
In my final analysis, just get the one that you like the most for whatever personal reason.

The dail goes to Oris hands down, the thickness on this variant is the issue. The Tudor's classic design along with unlimited strap choices edges it slightly ahead for me, even with that hour hand.
    Great comparison video! 👌❤

Aquis for me, probably my next watch. I love Tudor, great brand, but Oris is the coolest underdog of the industry, and the Aquis is a lovely design. Funnily enough - at least where I come from - Oris has a lot more "street cred" as a luxury piece than Tudor, which is a brand most people don't even know.

I very recently bought the Black Bay 58 Navy Blue to compliment a range of predominantly black-dialled watches in my collection that include the classic Rolex Submariner Date 16610 that I've owned for 19 yrs. The Tudor is a super, very well-made luxury timepiece and I appreciate its rather understated blue dial and bezel compared to the 'bling-blue' ceramic of my Omega Seamaster 300. Like-for-like think of the Blue 58 as a more modern take on its original black and gilt sibling. The blue really pops in daylight or in well-lit rooms and a pleasure to wear. Although not quite up there with the Rolex in the absolute quality stakes - why should it be when barely 40% of the steel Sub's price - go to an AD and try one on. COSC certified movement, 70hrs power reserve and great lume. You won't be disappointed and it's in a league above the Oris, as it should be considering the price difference.

A few years late to the conversation, but I have both the Tudor and the Oris. Honestly? The Tudor BB58 is on my wrist 5x more than the Oris. It's just a much better feeling watch - as it should be given the cost. But yeah, I have always loved Oris and it's been the underdog brand I root for.

Oris looks way way better than the Tudor. Dial on the Oris is killer compared to the more muted and dull BB58 Blue. Never really liked the blue myself, kind of sick of seeing Tudor/Rolex flooding selling forums etc. But the Tudor has subtle refinements with movement, premium bezel and winding feel, but you also pay double.

    • @engineer_wannabe
      @engineer_wannabe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The Oris is a looker! I too found the BB58 Blue boring at first but it has definitely grown on me over the past few weeks :)

  • @aib0160
    @aib0160 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I've just purchased the Oris. However, I didn't go for the new movement as I just don't see how it's worth near double the money. Yes it has 5 days reserve, higher magnetism resistance and a 10 year warranty. But when will I ever need to run it for 5 days without wearing or winding it? If I did not wear it for 5 days there's a chance the time and or date will need correcting anyway so winding it in addition to that is no hardship. The warranty will be dependent on servicing and won't cover damage from dropping the watch so there's not much to go wrong. Mechanical movements last anyway and I have some well over 100 years old that still run just fine. It's not like the 400 movement has a decorated finish either.
So with a standard movement that is accurate to 10 seconds per day you can have the same case, bracelet and dial (other than a vert slight change at 6 o'clock) as the 400 model here for a fraction of the cost of the Tudor, but you also get a date complication and superior water resistance.

I’ve decided to not consider the Black Bay 58 anymore after my experience at a local AD. The bezel action feels like something on a Chinese homage watch, the insert was misaligned by just under one millimeter to the left, the minute hand has dust particles visible at over a foot away and the bracelet links showed lateral play. This was on a newly opened display model which still had some plastic films, so it was shocking to see how low in quality control a €4000 watch could get. This is without mentioning the lackluster clasp.
It’s a real shame because I love the way it looks, but this many issues in a display model (which should be perfect to better persuade buyers) shoved me away. Now to try an Aquis with a tungsten bezel. I wonder how much better their QC is.

Great vid! If you shop around, you can get the oris for 20%-30% off... taking it to around half the price of a tudor.
So it's not really a fair comparison. The tudor is better, but the oris for the price is likely better value since its half the price of the tudor and that bracelet is brilliant, and the ceramic bezel and dial is much more interesting too.

i'd take the Tudor (and i did! though the black one.. :))
the Oris, other than having a rather pedestrian, poor movement in there (it's not even a top grade sw200! unacceptable for that money), it's waaay too "blingy" and shiny for my taste in divers. makes it look way too dressy. too many polished surfaces (which also means wear will show much more and look worse). it also sports 2 things that i really really dislike in divers: a date, and the indices are all pretty much the same. i want clear demarcations on my cardinal points in a toolwatch! and then there's the "integrated" bracelet, which just makes an unnecessary, humongous pain to change straps
at those prices, i'd rather get a Christopher Ward diver.. same quality for half the price.
but yeah... that clasp on the Tudor is waaay too big :( don't know why big companies can't come up with cool and comfy designs like for example Formex

The oris is better quality than CW.
I have both. Multiple aquis and multiple c60s.
I think the mvt does let the oris down... but they do some minor work to them before installing but when you consider you can get an oris for 1500usd, that's less than half the price of a tudor right?
It's a bit of an unfair comparison with tudor. Tudor is more on the price of an omega 300.
I also think with CW, you get no heritage. CW dosent really play with oris either. If you want to find a cw comparison, you'd choose another boutique like monta, and monta will win that battle.

That movement is the equivalent the ETA 2824-2. It's a good movement. Have you ever have a Rolex serviced? Expect to pay a 1,000 bucks because it's in-house.

@@anthonyonline4740 had a CW and sold it (previous gen Trident). i thought it was great for the price and liked it more than all the Orises i've seen and handled (a couple of boutiques near me that i visit often... for the other watches displayed), and didn't see any noticeable difference in fit or finish.
"heritage" is one of the many, many fables told in the WIS world. it's a meaningless marketing ploy perpetuated by the WIS (non)inteligencia and i won't be falling for it, thankyouverymuch
have a BB58, definitely superior to both by a not insignificant amount.

You have a blue Aquis 39.5mm and a blue BB58 with not fitting bracelet and you did sell the Railmaster ?
Maybe have a look for the Glashütte Original SeaQ 39.5 mm BLUE dial on a bracelet. The bracelet is fantastic and the finishing on this 39.5 mm diver is the best I've seen so far.
I want the new green dial, because i can not justify another blue diver next to my BB58.

Yeah, the Railmaster is gone 😅
I've been drooling over the green Panomatic Lunar for a few months now. Such a perfect shade of green 😍

Love the Oris clean ocean but I’m afraid it will be to small for my 19cm wrist…

Given the 14mm thickness, I found it ideal for my 18cm wrist. I wear it mostly with suits though, so it may depend on your use case.

Round indices of the BB58 are classic but seem rather yesteryear to me . . .

Oris looks like a seiko or orient to me and visually has less “quality”. But also I am not a fan of high polish including the shininess of this type of polishing and ceramic bezels.

Oris will lost 50 % of value after couple of years, Tudor will hold value quite nicely
