Tamar, I recently found a hand plane that belonged to my great grandfather. I got it sharpened and ready for use and I needed a shooting board. You are my “go-to” for jigs (I have built your cross cut sled previously), so I made your shooting board. It is, of course, wonderful! Th ask you so much for your content. However, you might have mentioned how much fun using a shooting board is! I might have made it sooner.
Hi, don't sell yourself short on your video production skills, it's very well presented; nice quick pace, clear and well lit, and a good mix of close up versus distance. The best features were; the 15 second starting snippet that outlined where you were going so we could understand the context of everything you were doing, the indepth demonstration at the end, and that you included your mistakes because sometimes we can learn more from mistakes than fluking it and getting it right, but not really knowing how we got it right.

Awesome versatile shooting board. One way to resolve the fence issue. On your "donkey board attachment." Is to make a fence attachment for the donkey board. It can look like your 1st attachment that you made. Just make sure that the fence is tall enough. Cut a matching friction fit groove. Then cut a 45 on it on 1 end. Problem solved & removable if not needed. I always enjoy watching your videos. 👍🏾That lil' bit of silliness😂 doesn't hurt either. But it warms my heart to consistently see your craftsmanship improve. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Hi Tamar, I'd seen this video before, and other shooting board videos since, but this is one of the best, esp. with its modularity. Now, after being less than satisfied with the miter joints on the top of a box I'm making, I just watched this 3 more times before making one. Handicapped by not having a table saw, nor the room to add one until a new home is completed in ~ 9 mos., I tried both miter saw and radial arm saw and decided the former was the better choice, leaving the radial arm saw for 90* cuts and dadoes. I still think that was right, but the miters still need a little repair, and doing it w/o a shooting board is guaranteed frustration. I'll appreciate having one jig for multiple applications! You teach so well, even when (or maybe because) you're in the process of earning. 'Tis said the wise one is she/he who knows what she/he doesn't know - I'm getting wiser every day!
I could not be more pleased with this jig. For square edge cutting the very 1st setup gave me perfect trims. On the long bevels it took me a while to get the cut square to the edge against the fence. I finally decided to make the fence on the 45 degree platform to be adjustable using t-bolts and slots. Now these long bevel cuts are perfect too. I'd never used a shooting (chuting?) board before. I don't know how I ever got along without one. The Low angle L-N Smoother works very well, as long as the blade is ultra-sharp. Perfection seems elusive in this trade, but this is a big step forward for me. - Brad (the just-barely-beyond-novice guy --- but wannabe-intermediate-before-I-die-guy)
Brilliant and versatile shooting board design. Thank you. I need one of these, and making it will be a good project for me. I love your videos, for very specific reasons: 1. No annoying computer generated distracting music jittering away in the background. So many video makers stick some excuse for music on their video and, as a musician, it's beyond annoying because I can't help listening to the "music". Thank you so much for not using any. 2, You don't waste my time. So many video makers spend up to three minutes telling me what they are going to tell me before they actually get around to telling me it. Fast forwarding through the preamble means I have to guess when they actually start saying something I need to hear. You don't do that. I love the pace you set, and if I need to think about something I can hit pause, or if I think I missed something then, heck, it's a video and I can go back and watch again. 3. You leave in your mistakes, and show how you corrected them. So many video makers pretend that they never make mistakes because they are so awesome, and of course they aren't. Okay, that's almost enough fanboy gushing at you, but I should add that your narration is very clear and well paced. You have a relaxed, yet high energy, presentation style, and you set a pace that precludes me going to the TH-cam settings and running the video at 1.5 speed, which I do with so many other videos. Oh yes, one last thing, I love the efficiency you demonstrate, and the simple little tricks and techniques you show me. You are simply brilliant, and I hope you never run out of subject matter.

This is one of the nicest shooting boards designs I have seen. My hat's off to you. To stabilize your accessories just add a hold down to the board (like on your TS Sled). Also, on the donkey's ear, just clamp a scrap piece the same thickness as your work piece against the fence. BTW, I am impressed with your knowledge of what a donkey's ear is. Your skill set and knowledge base is really grown since I first started watching your channel. Looking forward to more of your great videos

You do come up with some really fantastic ideas, Tamar. This is an excellent multi-use design. I have no power tools, so would have to do it with hand tools, but having an idea where you simply change the fence to suit your needs, is genius. I am so going to make something very much like this after watching this video. I have had a shooting board on my to-do list for ages, and this is going to help me get it done. I Love Rob Cosman's videos, and one thing he does is paint the lower edge of the rebate that the plane runs along with CA glue to harden it. That sounds like a good idea to me. Rob also does a totally OTT trick with masking tape to force a slight curve that apparently makes the plane sit flatter on the base, but I think I'll give that step a miss.
@@3x3CustomTamar Can't say I did that, but I did whack myself in the face a few times trying to swat at a bee. That's embarrassing. I once had one of those little ground bees (yellowjackets) chase me over 200 feet across my entire yard just to bite me on the face. He was pissed I ran over their nest with a lawnmower.
Your videos are always a treat. You are explicit in the steps as you describe them and you don't hide mistakes. I make lots of boxes and have a devil of a time getting everything right. I plan to make this jig to see if I can straighten out my shortcomings. Thanks for sharing your skills.
I've seen so many videos on making a shooting board, but this is the first one that's made me *really* want to build one. I think I have my next project for the next time I have access to a table saw.

LOL I had a little honey bee earlier this summer (I named him Bob) that showed up every single day that I was out in my little shop working. He actually didn’t bother me... it was sorta weird, like he just wanted to watch what I was doing. Whatever tool I was working on, he’d land on and just sort of hang out. Weird, right!? But what I HATE is when those wretched wasps come flying in. Those are some mean little ba$&#rds, and always sends me running LOL 🤣 🏃 🐝 ~~~~ Keep up the great work! I always love seeing all of your projects 😊
C Mar ha! That is weird. My fear is that it is a wasp and not a honey bee. The worst are the carpenter bees! I know they don’t sting. But they are so loud that they scare me! 😂😂
3x3Custom - Tamar LOL I hear ya! The loud buzzing freaks me out every time! My real problem is spiders though. I have severe arachnophobia. Any hint of a spider, and I run shrieking like a little kid! Probably not an ideal problem to have for someone who loves woodworking. 🤷🏻♂️

First of all great video and info. I like the saw stop with the micro adjustment. Certainly don't need playing cards to do that now. You were saying right before the giant bee assault that there could be tear out of the wood in that configuration... you could also back it with another piece of wood the same size. Can't wait until the next video.
Build complete! Including the 45 & 30 degree "donkey ears". That is a thing as I saw it somewhere else. For the 2 base board measurements I used Lie-Nielsen's free download of their shooting board. but the rest is all yours! My shop is small and I just don't have the room for all these planing jigs. But I need these. Thanks Tamar!

Gaaaah! Things go so much better when you have good tools to start with. I got my shootin' board fixins' today, and I have to make it with hand tools and a cupped slab on sawhorses. I would literally give you five dollars and a pack of gum for a square shootin' board right now.

Haha! My fear of bees is totally irrational.... I tried the veritas shooting board at a woodworking show and I just had to make one. Just used it on the box project I’m working on and I’m so happy I did! Good luck with yours!
looks like one of the best shooting board designs out there. I like the modularity factor. I'm going to make one for myself, with one major extra feature and some customizations

The SUPER major feature that I'm going to add is: - cut 2 inches off the left edge, plant neodymium magnets on both pieces to keep them together - whenever I'll be board-shooting the long boards, I can then separate the magnets-held left wing, and put it under the other end of the long board, to support it. And I haven't decided yet, but I think instead of the long slot to achieve the modularity, I might use 3 aluminum dowels. this way all I need in the new attachment, is to drill 3 holes in a straight line (drill press + fence).
Excellent video. I was looking for info on shooting boards so that I could improve on what I made years ago. Other videos have the info but your presentation made the difference. You've convinced me to join skillshare.
This is exactly what i need to help me with my woodworking. The shooting board i have is a basic one, and trying to hold pieces at 45° its difficult to get accurate passes with the plane. The mitre attached is ideal as well. My main issue with building one is that im limited with my power tools (no table saw or table router).

That is a really nice shooting board, with accessories. It may take a while, but I think I will have to try to make something like that. I only have one hand plane and I have never used it. I am sure I could get better results on some of my projects if I did. Right now I am just beginning to transition from structural to furniture grade carpentry.

Great video, thank you for sharing. This looks to be an improvement on my current shooting board (based on a Paul Sellars design). I love that you leave in your mistakes rather than edit them out. Real woodworking. After all we all make mistakes. (Don’t we?)
Don't know how i missed this one but this has been on my list of things to do and I really like the way you approached it. It was cool how you went through using it and figured out little weaknesses in the design that you could improve.
Just recently found your channel and like what you are doing so far, great work and ideas. Also major props for referencing where ideas come from, too many don't nowadays. If you want to use body mechanics while you plane, add a little strip of sand paper to the bottom of the jig for while you are pulling back. Great work.

Nicely done. Mineral spirits might work to take off the wax, and give you back the useful friction. All you need to make the donkey's ear work for thicker stock is a straight stick of wood to put between the work and fence. It need not be attached, but a small block at the top to keep it from sliding off is helpful.
I need to make a shooting board.. I actually had a need for one last weekend. Maybe a hole or two in the top of the "base" fence, and alignment dowel/pegs in the attachments would fix the sliding problem (which would eventually happen regardless of the wax).
Yeah. I have been wanting to make this for months. Ha. While that sounds like a good idea. The fence gets chewed up by the blade and you want to be able to sneak it forward to resquare it and keep it as a zero clearance fence for your workpiece

Love beautiful minds at work. Couple suggestions/ideas the 45 the edge stop was wondering if you could put a small grove to lock it in. Second, on all attachments also wondering on putting 2 to three pegs for the attachments don’t slide back. Other then that sweet work.
Thanks! If I didn’t put wax in then they wouldn’t be sliding back. The idea for pegs is good. But really you want o be able to move it towards the plane in case it ever comes out of square or you need to create more of a zero clearance.
Good project Tamar.. Removing wax from the dado I don't know if this will work but, you may be able to reduce or eliminate the wax you put in the fence dado by running it past that 1/2 inch router bit. Given that a brown paper bag is used for sanding in some situations, it may remove the wax without altering the size of the dado. The final and fastest solution is to just make a new fence. Attachment positioning An easy method for positioning the attachments would be to add a fence to the back of the attachments (a little iffy) or to the back side of the shooting board. A more complicate method would be to add a dowel to the bottom of the attachments and a register hole for it to enter in the board. Once the attachments are cut to flush, the blade would not cut them again.
You may be self taught but from someone who is only just getting in to woodworking ….trust me you’re an expert and rather inspirational

@@3x3CustomTamar Can't say I did that, but I did whack myself in the face a few times trying to swat at a bee. That's embarrassing. I once had one of those little ground bees (yellowjackets) chase me over 200 feet across my entire yard just to bite me on the face. He was pissed I ran over their nest with a lawnmower.
Your videos are always a treat. You are explicit in the steps as you describe them and you don't hide mistakes. I make lots of boxes and have a devil of a time getting everything right. I plan to make this jig to see if I can straighten out my shortcomings. Thanks for sharing your skills.

I had a little honey bee earlier this summer (I named him Bob) that showed up every single day that I was out in my little shop working. He actually didn’t bother me... it was sorta weird, like he just wanted to watch what I was doing. Whatever tool I was working on, he’d land on and just sort of hang out. Weird, right!? But what I HATE is when those wretched wasps come flying in. Those are some mean little ba$&#rds, and always sends me running LOL 🤣 🏃 🐝 ~~~~

C Mar ha! That is weird. My fear is that it is a wasp and not a honey bee. The worst are the carpenter bees! I know they don’t sting. But they are so loud that they scare me! 😂😂
3x3Custom - Tamar LOL I hear ya! The loud buzzing freaks me out every time! My real problem is spiders though. I have severe arachnophobia. Any hint of a spider, and I run shrieking like a little kid! Probably not an ideal problem to have for someone who loves woodworking. 🤷🏻♂️
Great video. I had decided to make a shooting board since I have never had complete satisfaction with my joints. This provided some excellent tips. Now for a low profile block plane.

First of all great video and info. I like the saw stop with the micro adjustment. Certainly don't need playing cards to do that now. You were saying right before the giant bee assault that there could be tear out of the wood in that configuration... you could also back it with another piece of wood the same size. Can't wait until the next video.

@@3x3CustomTamar The 45 degree add-on jig is simple. I'll also be making a 30 degree jig for 6 sided boxes.
Build complete! Including the 45 & 30 degree "donkey ears". That is a thing as I saw it somewhere else. For the 2 base board measurements I used Lie-Nielsen's free download of their shooting board. but the rest is all yours! My shop is small and I just don't have the room for all these planing jigs. But I need these. Thanks Tamar!

Gaaaah! Things go so much better when you have good tools to start with. I got my shootin' board fixins' today, and I have to make it with hand tools and a cupped slab on sawhorses. I would literally give you five dollars and a pack of gum for a square shootin' board right now.

@@3x3CustomTamar Thanks. The SUPER major feature that I'm going to add is:
- cut 2 inches off the left edge, plant neodymium magnets on both pieces to keep them together
- whenever I'll be board-shooting the long boards, I can then separate the magnets-held left wing, and put it under the other end of the long board, to support it.
And I haven't decided yet, but I think instead of the long slot to achieve the modularity, I might use 3 aluminum dowels. this way all I need in the new attachment, is to drill 3 holes in a straight line (drill press + fence).

This is exactly what i need to help me with my woodworking. The shooting board i have is a basic one, and trying to hold pieces at 45° its difficult to get accurate passes with the plane. The mitre attached is ideal as well. My main issue with building one is that im limited with my power tools (no table saw or table router).

That is a really nice shooting board, with accessories. It may take a while, but I think I will have to try to make something like that. I only have one hand plane and I have never used it. I am sure I could get better results on some of my projects if I did. Right now I am just beginning to transition from structural to furniture grade carpentry.

Great video, thank you for sharing. This looks to be an improvement on my current shooting board (based on a Paul Sellars design). I love that you leave in your mistakes rather than edit them out. Real woodworking. After all we all make mistakes. (Don’t we?)

Just recently found your channel and like what you are doing so far, great work and ideas. Also major props for referencing where ideas come from, too many don't nowadays.
If you want to use body mechanics while you plane, add a little strip of sand paper to the bottom of the jig for while you are pulling back.

Nicely done. Mineral spirits might work to take off the wax, and give you back the useful friction. All you need to make the donkey's ear work for thicker stock is a straight stick of wood to put between the work and fence. It need not be attached, but a small block at the top to keep it from sliding off is helpful.

I need to make a shooting board.. I actually had a need for one last weekend.
Maybe a hole or two in the top of the "base" fence, and alignment dowel/pegs in the attachments would fix the sliding problem (which would eventually happen regardless of the wax).
Yeah. I have been wanting to make this for months. Ha. While that sounds like a good idea. The fence gets chewed up by the blade and you want to be able to sneak it forward to resquare it and keep it as a zero clearance fence for your workpiece

Love beautiful minds at work. Couple suggestions/ideas the 45 the edge stop was wondering if you could put a small grove to lock it in. Second, on all attachments also wondering on putting 2 to three pegs for the attachments don’t slide back. Other then that sweet work.
Thanks! If I didn’t put wax in then they wouldn’t be sliding back. The idea for pegs is good. But really you want o be able to move it towards the plane in case it ever comes out of square or you need to create more of a zero clearance.

Removing wax from the dado
I don't know if this will work but, you may be able to reduce or eliminate the wax you put in the fence dado by running it past that 1/2 inch router bit.
Given that a brown paper bag is used for sanding in some situations, it may remove the wax without altering the size of the dado.
The final and fastest solution is to just make a new fence.
Attachment positioning
An easy method for positioning the attachments would be to add a fence to the back of the attachments (a little iffy) or to the back side of the shooting board.
A more complicate method would be to add a dowel to the bottom of the attachments and a register hole for it to enter in the board.
Once the attachments are cut to flush, the blade would not cut them again.
