    Pekin ducks
are one of the most popular domesticated duck breeds in New Zealand and globally, known for their friendly demeanor, hardiness, and high-quality meat and egg production. Originally from China, where they were bred over 2000 years ago, they were brought to Europe and the Americas in the 19th century. Pekin ducks are distinguished by their large, white bodies, bright orange beaks, and feet, as well as their gentle, calm nature. These ducks are often kept by small-scale farmers, hobbyists, and backyard enthusiasts for both practical and aesthetic reasons.
    Characteristics of Pekin Ducks
Pekin ducks are large, weighing around 3.6-4.1 kg (8-9 lbs) for adults. They are excellent foragers and enjoy roaming around paddocks, helping with natural pest control by consuming insects and small pests. Their large body size makes them one of the top choices for meat production, and they are ready for market as early as 8 weeks of age. Besides meat, Pekin ducks are also decent layers, producing up to 200 eggs per year under good conditions.
Their calm nature makes them a great choice for beginner duck keepers. Pekin ducks are hardy and adaptable, able to thrive in a range of climates, including the relatively mild temperatures of New Zealand.
    Raising Pekin Ducklings
Pekin ducks are excellent mothers, and raising ducklings is a rewarding process. Pekin ducklings grow quickly, reaching their full adult size in about 7 to 9 weeks. In the first few weeks of life, ducklings need warmth and protection, usually provided by a heat lamp if kept in an artificial brooder. They are fed a high-protein diet initially to support rapid growth, and then transitioned to a regular duck feed after a few weeks.
A mother Pekin duck is protective of her ducklings and will keep them close. The ducklings follow her around, learning how to forage and find water. Pekin ducklings are typically robust, but they require access to clean, fresh water, both for drinking and for swimming. Water is essential for their preening behaviors, helping them develop healthy feathers that are waterproof.
    Pekin Ducks in New Zealand
Pekin ducks have found a comfortable place in New Zealand’s small-scale farming and hobbyist community. Duck farming, in general, is a smaller industry compared to chickens, but it’s steadily growing as more people recognize the value of ducks for meat and egg production. Pekin ducks are favored not only for their productivity but also because they are easier to manage than some other breeds, with fewer health issues and simpler housing requirements.
New Zealand has several duck farms, both small and commercial, that raise Pekin ducks. Although precise national statistics are hard to come by, duck farming is not as extensive as other poultry industries, such as chicken or turkey farming. However, there is a growing market for premium duck meat in restaurants and specialty food stores. Pekin duck meat, known for its mild flavor and tenderness, is especially popular.
Backyard enthusiasts also keep Pekin ducks as pets and for small-scale egg production. In New Zealand, where many people enjoy rural and semi-rural living, Pekin ducks are a great addition to small farms, helping with pest control, providing eggs, and being great companions.
    Conclusion
Pekin ducks are a versatile and valuable breed for both small and large operations in New Zealand. Their excellent meat quality, decent egg-laying ability, and ease of care make them a favorite for many duck keepers. Pekin ducklings grow quickly, are resilient, and benefit from the care and protection of their mothers or owners. Whether raised for their products or as pets, Pekin ducks offer New Zealand farmers and hobbyists a rewarding experience, contributing to both local economies and the lifestyle of rural and urban duck enthusiasts.
