    I am so glad I found this video, this is exactly what I have been wanting to do but all videos are “painting” and do not have technique for distressed look or creating whitewashed look after painting without sanding (again)… I really can’t stand sanding, too dusty and gets everywhere.. going to be doing this! ❤

      YES to the hating sanding… !! Every time I think “well… maybe I’ll just sand this thing - it might be faster”, I do it about 5 minutes and I remember that I was NEVER GOING TO SAND AGAIN! 🤣🤣🤣
      I’m so glad it’s inspired you to try it! Thanks for watching! 🩷

    I did this to my livingroom/family room floor. I. Love. It. So. Much!!
    We live in a 1916 farmhouse and the cost to refinish the floors was way out of our budget. I scuff sanded, used Waverly chalk paint in a light gray and then a water based topcoat. I have never looked back!! Glad to know I'm not alone in my journey!!

      Wendy, we live on a farm, my hubby doesn't take his shoes off either. I've been VERY pleased with how it's holding up. I used Parks Pro Finisher by Restore, it's a water-base polyurethane for floors, in a crystal clear satin finish. I used a brush to put it on in sections. It dries super fast. I put 3 coats on the floor. It's a long process, but oh so worth it. We also have a senior dog that uses puddle pads and clean up is amazing. I hope this helps you out. Oh, I got the polyurethane at Home Depot.

      @Westport Wabi Sabi I do have a few pictures. I'll try to add them. I used a water based poly I got at Home Depot, it's in a gallon jug. "Parks PRO Finisher by Restore" Crystal Clear Satin finish. It takes a while to do, but I have back problems and I'm slow. Sat in an office chair and wheeled myself around. Because I used chalk paint, dry brushed, it dried pretty fast. Took the longest to put poly down.

    My fam has been in the flooring industry for a half century, and I must say that’s one of the best paint jobs I’ve ever seen anyone do on wood floors. You can achieve the same color with aniline dyes and whitewashes if you still want to see the full wood grain. The painting method is easier to repair on your own though. Save some of the mix or write down your mix so you can re create the color, use a small 320 or 240 scotch brite pad to lightly scuff the area, and then re paint the desired area. Also if your floors have contaminants on them, they will need deep cleaned otherwise the paint poly mix will eventually peel.

    U have BEYOND inspired me !!! ❤ we have 90 ur old proginal hardwood floors that we're never properly sealed, however, they do have a sortof gloss to them , especially in the guest bedroom which im turning into a nursery. Ive been going INSANE trying to figure out a way to reso the floors that wont cost an arm , a leg and my firstborn. I also dont have a car and am alone with my 15 monthl old baby girl and my 9e yr old mother in law, so, its kinda really hard to rent a sander and embark upon THAT journey. ~ i see that u said u only lightly sanded with one sheet of sandpaper ?! Is this accurate? ~ i recently decided that my only option is to paint the floors , mostly due to my budget. But, from everything ive seen, u need to either sand them befofe painting , or at least do a screen and recoat , which is using a buffer pad and a mesh wire screen sheet over the buffer pad on an orbital sander and then recoating the floors with a finish. But i want to paint mine then seal them. Im hoping to not HAVE to rent a buffer and do all of that, so , i also learned about another option called deglossing or etching. With a liquid deglosser. But, since i will be doing this experiment in the nursery, id like to keep the qeird chemicals to a minimum. I guess in short, what would u suggest i do to degloss the floors to prep them to paint ? Do u really think the diy paint will adhere to swmiglossed floors ? Oh ! Also, id LOVE to thank u for turning me onto DIY Paint !!! I already picked out 3 colors id like to use in the floors. One is mint chip , the other is pretty pink ( or something like that) and the other one is French something (its like a lavender) and i was thinking of getting the vintage linen , cuz id like to do a pink, lavender, mint green and a sortof white wash mixture (if that makss ANY sense whatsoever, lol) ~ but i live in Miami Beach and i dint know if diy paint delivers here or not. Anywho, thanks SO much ! Ur AMAZING !! ❤❤❤ im going to experiment with my palm sandsr tomorrow lol just for fun. See where it goes from there. ❤❤

      This was super exciting to read lol! I’m so glad you love DIY paint, first of all. That sounds like a beautiful, soft color palette to use. !
      You definitely don’t have to rent a sander, and the only reason I sanded a minute with a piece of sandpaper was to smooth the floor from the base coat I had previously painted on there, BUT for a semi glossy floor, the process WOULD be easier (faster bonding with less need to finesse the paint until you get 2 coats on, which is what you need to do if you paint directly on a glossy surface) if you either scuff-sand it or yes a de-glosser would be fine too. But not mandatory!!

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! And thanks for watching. It's so hard to say how long it takes because you've got to figure in dry time between coats, and that's a little different in each environment, and of course it depends on the size of the floor too. So i'll do my best to answer without drying times, but you've gotta add that in 😊(since all the products are water based, it's only an hour or two between each coat.) For one average room, I'd say it takes me 30 minutes for each coat or layer I do. Add dry time, and you should figure in at least 3-4 hours for the first couple of base layers, and then another hour or so for each color of "plank". If you can get that all done in a day, i'd say to wait overnight before you apply the protective topcoat/sealer!

      That doesn’t mean you can’t! For my projects, when I tried to make 2 cups at a time, it got too thick too fast.
      The plaster will thicken the paint VERY quickly if it sits exposed to the air very long.
      If you mix it in a container with an airtight lid, though, it should be fine.
      For one cup, I used 2 healing tablespoons of P of P to about the same amount of water- adjust to make the consistency like cake batter. Then mix in one cup of latex paint!

      I hope you’ll try! You have nothing to lose, in my opinion, if it’s all scratched up! Even if it’s not MY video, there is A video on TH-cam that you will find that will be the right way for you to do it ….. you CAN. Especially if you’re desperate! 😃😄 That’s when we tend to get scrappy and successfully figure out a way to make something look like we want!
      No, my dog didn’t scratch it up, and I’m always honest so I’ll say that we only lived there about 18 months after the time I painted the floors this time… but I would tell you that I don’t believe it would’ve gotten scratched up.
      Not just because of the clay base of the paint, but the topcoat (Varathane) is 100% durable. Like, for years and years. If you apply several coats, letting it dry in between, I believe it will stay in great condition for you.

    How many coats of the water based poly did you use ? On the back of the can it says not to use in floors so I’m worried. I’m currently doing this painting process in my laundary room. I moved my dryer and washer out but really worried about moving it back in once the sealer cures. They’re obviously heavy so I don’t want it to scratch the floor. I read online that oil based is stronger. Is it possible to do the first couple coats in water based and then the rest in the oil based ? What’s recommended for me?

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Okay, I've got to admit that's a GREAT idea, (if you're worried about moving something that heavy onto the floor after sealing).... you can TOTALLY apply an oil based poly over a couple of coats of the water based, as long as you let it dry completely... and i would apply 2 coats if you're putting oil based over the top; 3 coats if just using the water based. Be aware that oil based polyurethanes, as far as I know, will make a yellowish tone so if you're painting a light color, that would be a problem.
      *I could be wrong - there might be a clear oil-based product out there now, but I've never seen one!
      Last thing I would say: truly, the water based sealers like Varathane are SO durable; they would need to have a week or so to "cure"... for the moisture to completely dry from the sealer... but then it is as durable as any other sealer, in my experience.

      It’s plastic and voc free, but because of the clay, it’s completely durable even for floors, as long as you seal it.
      I use Varathane water based polyurethane, which dries clear and hard as nails.

      Here’s my link for the paint and you can find Varathane at places like Lowe’s or Home Depot!

    Sanding is for uneven wood surfaces or to lift foul smells from the top coat. If your floors are in good shape, there’s really no need to sand.

      @@alonreid I couldn’t agree more! Mine had a little bit of roughness from my previous work on it.
      But also, I know many would disagree with you if you’re using traditional latex paints because it would scratch off without primer.
      But not with chalk and mineral paints, which I obviously use.

      I was lightly sanding because some places weren't smooth. It's not necessary for the paint to bond; it would depend on if your floor was already smooth or if you wanted a textured look instead.

      Hi Kathleen! I'm afraid that I know very little about the care of wood floors in their natural state, (or untreated like yours!)..... I know paint. Specifically chalk, mineral and clay based paints and what they can do for wood, and how to seal & protect the wood with those types of products. I"m sorry I'm not more help 😟.... I know you can bleach wood to lighten it, and I would think that would also lighten the pet stains. I would use a watered down bleach mixture and scrub the pine, and when it's completely dry, I would apply a slightly darker, watered down DIY paint and let it soak into the wood, and then protect it with a water based liquid sealer like Minwax Polycrylic. I hope that helps!

      Ok. Have you tried Faded Burlap with Sandy Blonde, but just a little Sandy blonde... I'd say 3 parts burlap to 12 part sandy? See if you like that, then if it's too light, add a little chocolate. If it's too light instead, add white swan. Let me know if that gets the shade you want and we'll go from there! Keep in mind that my finished color looks that way because of layering the lighter colors over the first two coats of the darker, browner ones.

  • @sarahrobertson4778
    @sarahrobertson4778 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay. So the two coats of chalk paint, then you did individual plank strokes with varied tones mixed with polycrilic water based? Ratio? Did you did them randomly or did you do planks over the entire floor. Then whitewashed with more poly/chalk paint? Ratio? Then 3 coats
    Of pure poly. I really want to do this. Just want to make sure I do it right. How long between each coat? Any sanding between the poly ones?

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did them randomly, using the original plank coloring (the natural variants in the wood, you know, where a darker plank sort of jumps out at you, and looking at the majority of the floor tones vs lighter or darker ones. It's whatever looks pleasing to YOUR eye - that's what matters! I don't measure, but I'd say 1 part polycrylic to 3 parts paint. And then the "whitewashed" layer was more like half and half.

    I have 20 year old pre-finished red oak floors. I’ve had multiple dogs coming and going at will during those 20 years, so some places have no”pre-finish” left, it’s ALL orange and all the beveled edges are dark and dirty looking. It’s a early 70’s house originally…I’ve spent 3 years bringing this house up to the 21st century inside & out (painted brick) & I’m 70 years old! This technique looks to fit my limited budget, giving me the new look I so desire. Questions…I have 4 fairly young huskies at the moment…can I matte down the finish so it doesn’t show scratches as much? And while I want that beautiful whitewashed look, I need to be practical about the dirt walking in with them… so in keeping a wood grain, can adding slightly “muddier” streaks help hide the fact that it’s not as dirty as it really is?😁

    • @ShePaints

      Yes and yes! And good job; you're amazing for doing all that hard work (not because you're 70. Any age! But being 54, i can attest that everything is a bit harder than it used to be, so i wanted to give you kudos.) Yes you can make the finish matte; almost all of the water based polys you can buy have the option of glossy, semi gloss, satin or matte, just like conventional paints. I prefer mine matte as well.
      Yes, you can make it your own to suit you; you can add whatever colors you'd like, so adding some darker brown shades or streaks would be a great idea!
      I'm going to put the link to another video that you might want to try instead or as well, (no pressure of course to watch if you don't want to). I use this finish for a bit more raw, aged look which is better with pets.

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't ever mix a gallon of chalk paint at a time.,. it's so much thicker than regular paint, and once you add plaster of paris, ANY air getting to it will harden it within maybe an hour or two, so it's hard to keep. I've never mixed more than two cups at a time. (which would be roughly 4 Tablespoons of plaster, and about the same amount of water, enough to make it the consistency of cake batter.)

    Hi! Nice job! I'm in South America residing in a 70 year old colonial house with original Dutch lap siding interior-exterior wood walls and original hardwood floors. Everyone here paints wood ONLY with oil-based paint. Yuk! All paint companies say it is a must. Guess that's bc paint police are on the lookout. Back in the day the floors were painted with solvent paint that over the decades in most parts has worn down and in other parts is worn completely off. Is it really necessary to sand b4 using acrylic paint? Asking bc floor sander is near impossible to find and it's massively expensive to hire contractor to sand floor. Floor is too big for hand sanding! Also, do you think I need a primer on interior lap siding b4 painting with acrylic? All Tips appreciated! 😊

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I need to clarify that I paint with a chalk paint, which is why no, you don’t have to sand or use primer! Or work with any smelly oil based products. Chalk paints bond with wood on their own! So no, you do not have to sand!
      When I’m sanding, it’s only to smooth the surface a bit; not because it’s necessary for a durable finish. Does that make sense?
      Now, you mention acrylic paint and yes I’ve known some to mix that in for certain colors, but acrylic paint itself doesn’t bond with wood so I think it would scratch off!
      I think your use of acrylic paint might be a bit different from mine, so I want to make sure we’re talking about the same thing!

I would love to do a medium to light grey but still have a wood look. Will this method still work??? Also could I get the measurements of the mixes???

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching!
      Yes, it will still work, and although you can use a commercial paint that’s for painting cabinets, I think Benjamin Moore has one & other brands, it’s SUPER expensive & I don’t have any experience with those so I couldn’t give you advice that I’ve personally done. … I use chalk type paint (link should be in the description or you can use any brand) which will bond right to the existing black paint.
      And then because chalk type paint is reactivated with water, until you put a topcoat on, you could wash it off so if you’re nervous, you can brush on some just in a small area and see how you like the color first!

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mix I used is more about proportion because I don’t have a specific measurement 🤪 - so it’s more like 1 part of one color to 1 part of another. …plus you can vary the tone a little bit because wood grain naturally varies a little bit.

      Yes, absolutely! I know I can’t prove it without you being here 😅 but let me explain - chalk type paints, instead of plastic- based paints like latex, don’t really sit on top of the wood, but sort of bond to it because it’s so porous.
      So it could wear off over decades I suppose, but it literally can’t peel or crack.

    Can paint scratches be fixed easily?

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the most part, yes. It depends on what type and color of wood floor you're talking about fixing, or do you mean paint that has scratched off of any surface, not just wood? DIY Paint will not scratch off at all, of any surface. It has clay in it, so as it cures, it is as durable as adobe. But if you're just asking about paint scratches you have somewhere, let me know and I'd be happy to give a specific fix!

      That would make sense and be totally fine! I just am a brush girl; have been since I started a decade ago unless it’s a wall or ceiling for a mural and it would be easier on my hand.
      For me, rolling means extra steps, like getting the rolling pan, having another tool that has to be cleaned, … I know that’s a little dumb but my adhd makes me want to start everything NOW, and a brush is more immediate.

    Doesn’t it chip off or look uneven? Work for cherry 🍒 wood floors?

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! Well, it can look uneven like every paint or stain in creation, but the beauty is that you can just apply another light coat if needed until you get it looking exactly how you want!
      Chalk type paints don’t chip like latex can (unless you cause chips on purpose for a chippy look, like milk paint does) because they are so porous & adhere to the wood.
      Latex paint is made from the same chemicals as plastic, which is why eventually it could peel off in a sheet, whereas chalk paints can’t do that even if you wanted them to!

    Thanks for sharing!-
    I have been looking for an inexpensive way to revive my drappy old harwood floors...
    We have a puppy, who is now 6 who has scratched the mess out if this floor as well...
    My question is, does the chalk paint hold up well with high volume areas?- especially 6 year old puppies with long nails who refuse to let anyone cut them and bites them herself?...would you say a darker floor or a lighter floor would work better in this scenerio?
    And also, I believe all the laquer/finish had pretty much come off/worn away in most areas, but for the areas that may still have some, is that what the sandpaper was for in your video?- or can I absolutely get away with sanding?
    Also, whoever installed this floor in my house installed using tiny nails in lines (that you can still see) to I'm guessing it's the framework to the house?- cause in my basement on the ceiling of the floor above you can literally see these narrow planks we walk on up here...like there is nothing in the other side of this floor...lol

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Well, the chalk paint itself is 100% durable as far as paint goes. the more telling element is the topcoat you use, and that you apply it like the manufacturer says to! I use a water based topcoat which can be just as durable as the oil based ones. I would say it would be hard to keep the dogs off of the floors for long enough for them to thoroughly dry between each coat... so maybe you should look for a product that promises durability but quickly! :)
      I was sanding for just roughing up the previous color and/or topcoat, yes. You don't have to sand for the paint to bond, but it doesn't hurt to smooth it up with just a swipe or two. Doesn't take long!
      Also, as a fellow dog lover of a dog who is terrified of getting his nails trimmed, I've learned a lot by watching youtube videos about how to trim their nails the most successful way for them.. and just using sandpaper or a pumice stone is much easier too! Just something to try. I cannot stand the sound of his nails clicking on the floor, so he gets no choice in the matter! (But he gets lots of treats when I trim them.)

      @@ShePaints hey there!- thank you for responding!
      I just meant when asking, is this type of paint durable as far being able to withstand scratches that may result from my pup when she gets riled up due to my teenagers...
      I could keep her off of the floor long enough to paint and dry, but was just more concerned about the durability of the paint with scratches...or would it help to put more coats of topcoat on to protect the new paint job?
      New question tho- we have pretty old ceramic tile in the bathroom, and I keep running across these videos where people recommend not taking the cheap way out to paint old tiles-will chalk paint and topcoat work for the bathroom as well?- especially if it does not have a fan to properly vent the moisture when someone showers?...
      Apparently, who ever layed these smaller tiles thought peach and maroon look great together...lol, I would love to change it, both on the walls and the floor!- lol
      Also- what is the difference between diy paint and chalk paint?

    • @ShePaints
      @ShePaints  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jennifertaylor9686 Sorry for this delayed reply!! The durability for scratches is as good as traditional finishes, I promise, with the correct water based poly or topcoat sealer for sure.
      And I want to say that this same process for tile is 100% durable as well, having done it, but i have only done this on fireplace surround tiles and laundry room tiles. I know it has been done for bathrooms by many people, but since I haven't personally, with the moisture, my responsible self says to not guarantee it the best choice. 🤷‍♀ But I would do it in a heartbeat. 😃
      And people who don't use chalk paint always say to never use chalk paint, just fyi. 😅 I would search here on youtube for someone (who looks competent) like "yes chalk paint on bathroom floors!" and see what you think.

      @@jennifertaylor9686 Oh, and diy paint usually IS chalk paint, mixing it themselves using either plaster of paris (what i always used before i started selling the brand Diy Paint by @debi's design diary) or calcium carbonate but it's gritty in my opinion) adding it to latex.
