    Loved Little Britain back in the day, everyone at the time was watching it too. Literally had no idea that anyone was offended by it until the internet and social media blew up and started seeing people moaning about how x, y, z sketch wasn't funny just offensive. I was so perplexed at the time I just couldn't understand why people were taking a dumb sketch show so personally, re-watching it now though I'm almost surprised wasn't _more_ controversial 😂

    To be honest, the thing I remember most of Brainiac: Science Abuse weren't really the women (to be completely honest, I almost completely forgot that it had those segments) but more so that depending on the type of salts you shove in high quantities into caravans, you get impressive colorful explosions AND that thermite is pretty disturbing (something I was recently reminded off when I was reading one of the Final Destination novels where it was used to off a character...)... But frankly, you could still make Brainiac today, perhaps make it a bit more scientific (there is a lot of cool looking experiments you still do) and less breast-centric but it can be done.
    A show (though not British, it is Belgian) that I don't see anyone making today would be M!LF, which was short for Men Liberation Front and was meant to be poke fun at feminism and the idea of the new man in a satirical, be it at times incredible juvenile, way and since people nowadays simply don't seem to get satire anymore, anyone involved would like be burned at the stake for it if made today.

  • @j0hnf_uk
    @j0hnf_uk ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't think there's any comedy on TV today, due to this innate fear that someone, somewhere and at some point in the future _might_ possibly get offended by something said, (in jest, no less), on it. Apparently, we're not allowed to find things funny, (particularly in regard to ourselves), any more. Because, that's all it would take. Seeing the funny side of things rather than living as a perpetual victim, scared of how the world might perceive us, and complaining about it when it gets too close for comfort. The infantilising effect where no-one is allowed to say anything even remotely interpreted as disparaging about anyone else, (particularly pertaining to race, gender and sexuality), as it could possibly be interpreted as hurting their feelings. The irony being that it's not even the people within these groups who complain, but some sanctimonious offended by proxy individuals/advocacy group, who have to make a noise every now and then, otherwise no-one would know they existed, not to mention risking their, no doubt, well-paid jobs paid for by the public purse, no less.

    Think you've missed the point about Brainiac: Science Abuse. It wasn't all about scantily clad women it was more about how fast John Tickle can run across a pool full of custard or how potent thermite is. It took light-hearted questions and smashed them together with actual science and a fun editing style to create a brilliant comedic effect, it was genius. You've honed in on one particular theme and by doing so you're tainting the shows legacy.
    It's as if you're making out it's just some backwards show for 'lads' and 'blokes' who just wanted to see something raunchy.

    Hated Little Britain when it first aired, it just wasn't funny and people are really here trying to compare it to South Park? Fat Families and similar shows (Supersize vs Superskinny, What not to Wear, Snog / Marry / Avoid, 10 years younger etc) were all just an excuse to bully and exploit people on national TV. I disagree about Braniac though, it was another show I grew up with and it was so, so much more than the skantily clad professor who maybe made up about 5 minutes of the shows 30 minute runtime. All that show did was dump an unhealthy amount of pressure on ageing individuals to look young/trendy (and gave out a very irresponsible message that growing old gracefully is not acceptable in society), not to mention conveying that broken aesop that it's acceptable to cruelly rip someone's self-esteem apart over trivial things such as thier hair, looks, dress sense & physique. It used to be that if people took offense, they COULD write/phone and make complaints, but most of them would simply not watch the programs they found distasteful.
    With Social media and everything being available with just a search phrase, people have not only gotten an inflated idea of how important their opinions are, but also a much easier time to stalk and hate and complain about that which they find "offensive".
    I watched a video explaining how the human body reacts to the pressure of the ocean depths, and it was fascinating. In the comments however was some outraged snowflake (I am not a right-wing nut but that phrase is apt) who had so obviously not only read the description of the video, but also watched the entire thing despite being easily grossed out and offended by biology... ??? Like, why even click a video you can't stomach watching? And why watch it all the way through??
    Social media was a mistake. People of all political orientations live in a constant state of outrage, and it's reflecting on real world politics.

    Also Fat Families was another good show I remember from my late teens that was a good show and still is relevant today and needs to air and Supersize vs Superskinny was a good show too I remember seeing some very lanky people being forced to eat the crap the fat ones were eating and vice versa

      Nah fat families was straight up bullying people struggling with obesity and food issues. All science shows that shaming doesn’t work, in fact it makes it worse. If they wanted to make a show truly helping these people, they should instead have used a psychologist and a nutritionist on the show! Shaming someone for their addiction does not work.
