Spoke to the lecturers at my sons college they say the insurance is so high on a 16/17 old its putting firm's of so the lads end up on a 3 day a week course that generally ends up with no job, when I did my apprenticeship 40 years ago there were 2 groups per year
Its a bad situation isn't it mark the trades are just gonna get poor quality tradesmen this country set a bench mark many years ago and they are ruining it all with poor short term under funded courses that do nothing these lads have a bit of paper to say they are qualified but in reality they arnt and thats not there fault .its government and shame on them good post and a very valid point so what incentive do companies have to employ an apprentice again government need to do more its such a sore subject with me because i think these young people are being let down and thats not fair they deserve the same chance i had . Great post thanks mark Justin 👍
Hey, Im an ex-welder self-teaching in my back garden. If you want to apply yourself and watch skilled guys like yourself I don't think you need a college. I left x-ray pressure vessel work to do a 4yr welding course with another company, This company wasn't as higher standard but sent there young lads to college. 1st 2 yrs I got a Distinction in my practicals. 2nd 2 yrs credit standard had dropped with been at company with a lower standard. Hindsight Site experience is more important than a certificate. Try and get into a good company learn from high skilled collegues.

Thanks Gary yes you can add creasing tiles to protect the brickwork underneath but a lot of people dont want them or just dont want to pay for them but yes i agree with you . Justin 👍
That’s not bad for the lad, for laying a brick on edge twice, skill comes with practice.. Sh1ttttt I remember doing my 3 year course at college for 3 years, using shitty sand, well 🤣🤣 if you could call it sand as been reused a thousand times, so basically welt salt mixture that was sloppier than a tart in the red light district, and bricks that had more chips than a fish 🐠 & chip shop.. But had a good teacher, but basically your learning a bit more than the basics, and trying to do a bit more technical stuff in the 3rd year with that slop they called mortar, obviously no cement as needs to be taken down a thousand times, before they would throw a new bag of sand in the mixer.. Was like laying wet kin mud... But the experience comes on site in a gang... This apprentice will learn so much more being with you guys...✌🏼
Been there myself can relate to all that 🤣🤣 .we had the option to send him to college but they wanted to teach him bricklaying and two other trades which is just nonsense and all in two years . So we decided against it its a massive let down from the government these youngsters dont deserve that do they .Years ago used to be 5 years i did 3 then it was 2 now 3 trades in two years it now a joke . Appreciate your post great points that i hate to agree with to be honest but your right Justin 👍
College is great in my opinion, just moving onto level 2 bricklaying. However there are some downsides, beacuse of the limited space and time, you only build smaller things, got a cavity wall coming up soon, like a small part from a house with cavity closures and stuff which is by far the best assessment piece. A negative point is, its better to be out on site learning as then you get a real idea, some people wont take you on without any experience. 😩
I loved college and im glad you think its great and i hope it delivers a skill you can apply on site.1989 i did 3 years in college bricklaying we had blocks of 6 weeks on site then 6 weeks in college.
