- In Japanese society, courtesy is a very important part of everyday life. And one of the key concepts of being polite in Japan is 遠慮 (えんりょ). In this video, I will show how 遠慮 is used with many examples.

The intro reminded me of a painful memory when I mistakenly said 孕ませ instead of 払わせ when offering to pay for my friend's bill.

the fact that いいですよ！悪いですよ！ makes any sense blows my mind
いいですよ！ has a implied *I'm* before it, so it means something like *I'm good*, which is also used in English as a polite refusal.

as i understand, ておく form is used to indicate that you'll finish something for good.
e.g. you have postponed a lot of homework - 宿題終えておこう

In Russian we 遠慮しないで as say "не стесняйся". Actually it maps to "don't be shy" in english exactly

what i find so interesting is that although we don't have a specific word for it like japanese does, greek people do the exact same thing. I know that other cultures also have some version of this as polite courtesy, but I think it's a lot more relaxed and straightforward with, say, americans. if someone offers to pay, they just pay and that's that. greek people will offer and insist, but it's an unspoken rule that you have to fight them back about it at least 2 or 3 times. but it's so interesting that you have an actual word for this kind of thing

So how does one know if someone is serious about paying the bill? And do Japanese go dutch at all, i.e. each person paying for one’s own meal when eating together? How do you establish that? (I know this is not the point of the video but I’m just curious.)
遠慮 literally means "further consider" in Chinese and we don't use it in the extreme wrap around way like Japanese do, so it is always bizarre for me whenever I encounter a sign saying ご遠慮ください.
Please further consider photography inside the store...
In Chinese in means « long term worry ». As in 人無遠慮 必有近憂 (people either have long term worries or imminent concerns, it’s inevitable). So yes it’s funny the Japanese usage of it indeed

Kaname-san, please help me. I rely on captions to understand what is said in videos. The TH-cam captions are so, so terrible. Somehow, the captions get markedly worse at regular intervals.
I know providing captions is a lot of work for people making videos, so TH-cam SHOULD provide readable captions. But TH-cam does not do this. Please consider making captions for videos. Thanks, sensei!
