    I think their 1-10 rating system is meant to represent how many seconds they take to rake.

    • @krissisk4163
      @krissisk4163 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Really all they rate is the body. You've gotta admit that if you take that body and give it a good core then it would be a good lock. Nothing short of a grinder is going to beat it destructively. It's just too bad that Master apparently doesn't consider picking enough of a threat to protect against.

      Kris Sisk It says MAX pick resistance. Maybe it means that it won't break when picked?

    • @jayayebee
      @jayayebee 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even better, it won't come remotely close to breaking your pick.

    • @nitramretep

      I think it refers to the age of a person that can open it!

    Very interesting. I’ve never seen an M930 with all standard pins. The few I’ve picked have 4 spools. BUT, I have run into a regular 930 with all standards... and it’s supposed to have 4 spools. Looks like a case of terrible QC, because I’m pretty sure that’s not spec. Even with the spools though, this is a 30 second Lock. It’s a shame because it’s not bad otherwise.

    • @mattlogue1300
      @mattlogue1300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why don't they always put in spools, etc?

    • @katiedonovanAlt
      @katiedonovanAlt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They've discretely changed them. In the now 930X, the screw holding in the plug is a TORX.
      Because, you know, it was too easy to get to the core and see their crap using a screwdriver just about everyone has.
      I think that's where the "X" comes from. Also, FYI; the "KA" you see in some Master model names means, "Keyed Alike."
      If you check the shelf at your local big-chain hardware store, you'll find a lot of these locks are keyed alike to others nearby.
      This makes it easier for people who need to buy a dozen of these at once to get them keyed alike; but of course it kida screws the folks dumb enough to buy one for their home from the store in the neighborhood because all of their neighbors who bought that lock probably have a key to their lock as well as their neighbors'.
      Master likes to screw everyone they can who is NOT a business.
      I think the reason they put their best cores into their LOTO locks and crappy ones into their "10's" is so their corporate clients can tell their insurance companies that since they host Master's best cores, the LOTO locks are as safe as they can be, so when it comes to a court case over a wrongful death because someone else removed another worker's LOTO, (These are often supposedly "One Lock, One Key" to ensure no one else CAN remove the LOTO without destroying it)the insurance company gets to say the LOTO was not picked opened and MUST have either been removed with the key, or by a person intent on murder.
      Either way, not Master's fault, not the insurance company's fault, and not the employer's fault.
      Wanna know why something stupid is happening?
      Follow the money. Always....you know that; you're a lawyer!

    • @eak125
      @eak125 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They said pick resistance... not rake resistance... /s
      Seriously though, with that key bitting, it shouldn't have even been rakeable... yet it was.

    • @FG-Supercharged
      @FG-Supercharged 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      eak125 : Yeah, I thought the same. I thought this was going to be at least a bit of challenge.
      We have a Master Lock padlock here where I work... It's been gutted though and a Aussie BiLock core put in it - now THAT thing is a challenge. I tried, took 3 weeks to pick it at 20 mins. at a time (first time on a BiLock) and even then I couldn't repeat it. I reckon I just got lucky (and need more practice).

    The drain hole is actually in a good location relative to the top of the screw too; it's offset, so you can't use that as a guide hole.
    If Master would just use some decent cores, they'd have solid locks.

  • @AlbertLebel
    @AlbertLebel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Hi Bosnianbill. So at my job we were in the works of purchasing our locksmiths company before we had financial issues and I already did a lot of learning by replacing and rekeying locks but never really learned how to pick but when it was in the talks of buying him out I got a pick set n would always rake with a decent amount of success and since that deal fell through and the opportunity came up where our old locksmith needed someone to handle business while he’s on his trips I decided that this was something I really want to learn and have been watching you and the lockpickinglawyers videos for the past 2 months and I got a cheap amazon and wish set (Amazon was $12 wish was $8) and when I got the sets they were relatively the same the one from wish was kinda rough but after fair use they are same in terms of feel. We use a lot of master locks at work and we have a bunch that we don’t have they keys for (if you saw our key trays which are literally hundreds and with no labels you wouldn’t want to try every key and me just trying to pick them which some were rated 7-9 on master locks ratings I was able to pick (actually picking by feel because I really want to learn the craft) I was able to pick over 40 locks within a week. (Which I now use as my practice locks) we also have some American locks which I have on my keychain which I would love to send a picture of I have 87 keys on my key rings which I use for work and if my set doesn’t open it then I know no one at work has the key and I would have to resort to looking in the bins. My question is what recommendations do you have to be a good learners but also challenging lock where I can learn how to feel security pins and how to handle them?

  • @RookieLock
    @RookieLock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I bought the same lock a few of years back, all I wanted is something with spools.. I was sooo disappointed when I opened it up and it didn't have 1 security pin. I figured a 10 on their security scale would at least have a spool or 2, lol. To be somewhat fair, some of these 930XKADLH do have spools.... I even went so far as to contact Masterlock about this. They did not respond.

    I bought one of these M930XKADLH magnum locks at local Home Depot a month or so ago. It has a crimped core, all spools and an allen screw holding the core retention plate on. other than that its the same.
    Its definitely not rake-able. Like the one in video.
    With a slightly filed Sparrows padlock bypass driver Im able to open this lock also.

  • @SnakePicks
    @SnakePicks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I purchased one of these from Home Depot a few weeks ago. Busted out the city rake and I was in within seconds. However, to my complete surprise, when I gutted mine and inspected the pins, it had 5 spools! Perhaps the bitting was perfect for the city rake. The SSP of it took seconds as well, as mine had the convenient binding order of 1,2,3,4,5

      It's really sad because their housings are usually fantastic. Higher end masterlocks hold up wonderfully against most criminals who would just try to cut the lock or shim it. The housings are usually top of the line.
      But get one novice with a rake, and they're done for. They could easily even get away with charging ~20$ more for the kind of inner workings you'd find for a 20$ lock from another high end lock company, and you'd have an amazing piece of work.
      I just feel like someone higher up has to realize this at some point.

    • @randy4903
      @randy4903 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tex Patriot it would be tougher to pick, but the way the pin chambers in the plug are countersunk means that you have a much greater margin of error when manipulating the pins. The locks are made that way to allow for sloppier tolerances with pins and keys, but this also makes them easy to pick.

    After watching Bosnianbill and LockPickingLawyer's videos on picking Master Lock LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) padlocks and how good the 6 pinned core is, and then watching Wayne Winton's video on how extremely difficult it was to cut the 930 (He had to use a bolt cutter with a ratchet strap), I find that destroying a LOTO and installing the core in the 930 is still cheap enough to be one of the least expensive and tough locks for the money. The $23.00 930 is a really really tough lock to cut. Just swap the core out from a $9.00 LOTO.

    • @WilliamMancel
      @WilliamMancel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    UPS and FedEx use mostly American brand.

      Solved (at least for me) I disabled a plugin called h264ify. TH-cam streams VP9/8 codec but some cpu's (mine) struggle so h264ify forces h264 streaming instead. This for some reason was not playing nice with this video. I disabled the plugin and it plays. Re-enable plugin, problem presents itself again.

    The same lock I bought over a year ago to play with had 4 spools in it. Now that you've gotten one and gutted it, you may remember I messaged you around a year ago asking if the six pin core from a master lock lockout410 would work in this 930 body? At the time when I asked before you said you didn't know. Now that you've gutted it, do you think the core from a 410 would work?

    I love how master lock has quite some branding, at least in my country yet they are not able to make a damn lock that can serve it's purpose and secure something.
    Although, the core is replaceable with a standard euro profile cylinder, you could use that good body and put something that actually locks.

    I stick master lock W600 cores in those and they are much better. The core is $6 on line and it has spool and serrated pins. It also has an AM3 keyway so you can use your American lock keys on it

    Bill, I have this exact same lock I got on eBay some time ago. Was wondering how you fixed this lock? Didn't see anything else from you on it. I'm guessing you could re-pin it with american lock pins? But I agree the cylinder looks pretty sloppy. Did you find a replacement cylinder? I took an American cylinder and tried it in the lock , it fit but the engagement end is different and I couldn't seem to make it work? I know on American locks I put a spring and top pin in the last cylinder and a #4 pin and it gives you 6 pin security with a 5 pin bitted key. Ironically the exact same pin on Kwikset does the same thing, if you have a 6 pin cylinder. Worked like a charm on my Abus 83/45. Also I'm wondering do the master locks suffer the same problem as the American locks with the Peterson cylinder bypass tool? Sure looks like it would? Speaking of those wafers that you put in up to 3 of them to secure American locks, do you have a source to obtain them? Only ones I found were on eBay and they were $5.00 for a bag of 10. Seems kind of expensive. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

      So, after I sent this yesterday, I decided to try my hand at picking this thing. Note I am probably the worlds worst lock picker lol. I wouldn't have much of a career as a burglar..... But any way it took me maybe 30 seconds to rake pick it lol. Wow if the world all used Master locks, i would have a thriving career as a burglar lol. Anyway all kidding aside it's pretty sad. The lock is build like a brick Shit house. And the core is a mess, I can't even imagine re-pinning it with spools and serrated pins is going to help much? Is there a better cylinder that can be put in this thing? American lock cylinders don't seem to work or I could make mine anyway? It's really too bad this lock would be awesome if it had some really secure core in it.

    Concerning aspect that could escape many is the part number... the "KA" means Keyed Alike, the "LH" is just the shackle length, and the "D" is Display packed. When I sell padlocks, each client gets a true KD number we randomize when rekeying EVERY American and Master PRoSeries lock we sell. You mention lack of spools and serrations and a 6th pin.... the 6230 has all that, and a MUCH better tolerance keyway. Not everything MAster makes and sells is junk, just the built-to-price stuff from your favorite places to shop, Amazon and Home Depot

    Hi, after watching this video, I bought the lock on Ama*** in Europe. Here it's called "Excel" (instead of Magnum). M930EURDLH. Looks as great and beefy as it is easy to pick. Sadly, my one has two shallow cuts on 1 and 2 and deeper ones on 3 to 5. Once I got the binding order, I can now open it reliably within half a minute (SPP). Great show effect, opening a 30+ Euro lock in 30- seconds.
    By the way, that little key pouch on the packaging, hiding the bitting from the front but fully exposing it from the rear... Same in the US?

    I recently bought two of these for a really good price (12€/piece) and had planned to upgrade the core and use them for low security applications around the house but upon closer inspection both are missing the screw that holds the bottom plate in place and seem to use some sort of rivet instead. Did I get counterfeit ones or is that Masters new way to save some bucks during production?

Thank you in advance, I also emailed the lock lab in case you don't see this.

    I bought some really cheap from ebay. 2 of them can be opened with a paper clip as tention tool and some hits with the bare hand to the not pinned side, 3 more can be raked really easy but one has resisted everything I tried so far... Maybe I got the one in a million secure Master xD Btw you can really easy reassemble these rubber seals, if you put them in the fridge for about 30 minutes :)

    The newer production ones now come with all spool driver pins. However they are not much better as I can still pick them rather quickly and i am a very inexperienced picker, also some of them still rake open easily even with the new security pins. Not to mention they still have that large nut that can be unscrewed with pliers once the rubber piece is removed. You can always count on master to make sure there is at least one or two ways to quickly defeat their locks with little to no skill so that if you lose your key or are a criminal you will never be locked out lmao.

    You know, it's funny. I've been watching Bill's vids for years. A few years back, I noticed that the padlock on the garage door control box was missing/stolen (I think I know what really happened to it but I won't elaborate here). So I went to a local hardware store and bought a Master padlock (a dial one with a key that lets you change the code). It's piss-weak. I tested it a few times. The code I selected doesn't work properly but you can open it with a few tries.
    Anyway, it hasn't been stolen yet. :)
