Dwarka: Have archaeologists finally found India's sunken kingdom? - BBC REEL

  • The city of Dwarka is one of the seven holy pilgrimage centres in India. It is the only place which is contemporary with the events described in the epic Mahabharata, where it is described as the ancient kingdom of Krishna. It is written that upon Krishna's death the city was sunk beneath the Arabian sea.
Today, archaeologists searching for the lost kingdom believe they have found evidence of its existence off the coast of the modern-day Dwarka, and are trying to understand what could have caused it to be lost beneath the sea.

When invaders invaded India they burnt the books and historic records kept in the universities named nalanda and takshashila which were the worlds first universities. It is also said that the fire went on for about 2 months due to the large quantities of books .
Taxila was burned by the Huns 600 AD and Nalanda by the Khaljis 1196. if not for this India could have more accurate information about its old history

We know that sea levels have risen 124 metres since the end of the last glacial maxima (12,000 years ago). We know that a lot of coastal cities drowned because the sea level rise. The problem is there are no contemporary records of the city known as Dwarka from where Krishna reigned. Just like there are no contemporary records of the Indus Valley Civilisation. But we do have remains of this civilisation which have been accurately dated and it's not mentioned in any ancient literature from the sub-continent at all. But it does find mention in records 4300 year old records from the Mesopotamian civilisation. They called the nation "Meluhha" by their contemporary Sumerians. Till such remains or references of Krishna's Dwarka are which can be physically dated, it is not considered "historical". The only references we have are from mythology which was transmitted verbally over unknown generations to be documented only around 800 years ago.

    • @dopplerduck
      @dopplerduck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

@@user-pf4tn2rl9n That's an error margin of 600 years! There is no evidence of the Mahabharat being written anywhere till about 800 years ago. It was passed through the generations orally. It is claimed that it was written between the time period you mention. If you are aware of a document with the epic written on it older than 800 years , I will be grateful if you point me to it.
Dwarka is claimed to be a city of the late Harappan period (that would make it from around 2000 BCE) by some scholars off lately but there is no evidence for it yet. If it was a city from the Harappan period, it would make it the 3rd or 4th oldest continuously inhabitated city of the entire history of our species. The Harappan civilization was in decline around 1900 BCE, completely disappeared by around 1500 BCE, followed by a collapse of most civilisations around 1100 BCE. When civilisation rose again after a few hundred years, what we call classical history started.

This statement is based on hundreds of ( geological+ hydrological+ Astronomical )evidences researched by Nilesh Oak and his team. That means the present Archeological society of India has to dig the areas which were unsubmerged in and around 7000 yrs ago, which is farther away in sea from the present coastline . I am confident we will find the real remains of original Dwaraka sometime in future , that will be the greatest find in our Indian history. The Real Hindus know that their Itihasas ( Ramayana and Mahabharata) are real histories. Apart from these the 51 Shakti peeths scattered all over the Indian subcontinent are also of great significance.

So interesting how myth and history interact. Just like how 19th century Western archaeologists were motivated by proving the Bible, we can use mythology as historical text (with plenty of caution!) in other areas of the world. This also tells us something about the importance of the sea for civilizations, and how changes in sea levels can be catastrophic. Unfortunately, that may well be a future many of today's cities are facing.

      Dwarka
The ancient Indian city of Dwarka is known in Hindu culture to have been the great and beautiful city of Krishna. The Hindu writings say that when Krishna left the Earth to join the spiritual world, the age of Kali began and Dwarka and its inhabitants were submerged by the sea. The tales of the submersion can also evoke a tsunami like the one that struck India in 2004.
The modern Dwarka is today one of the seven sacred towns of Hinduism, visited each year by pilgrims worshiping Krishna. The search for its submerged part began in the 1930s, and the first archaeological excavation took place in 1963. Numerous ancient artefacts were found, as well as the submerged remains of the ancient Dwarka during the next excavation led by an underwater archaeologist.
Between 1983 and 1990 the archaeologists discovered a fortified foundation on which the ancient city walls must have been built along the river banks. Stone blocks used for the construction, pillars and irrigation systems were found but a debate is still ongoing regarding the dating of the vestiges, either from 3 000 to 1 500 years BC or from the Middle Ages.
Numerous stone anchors have also been recovered on the site at the same depth, which suggests, along with the size of the submerged part of the ancient city, that Dwarka must have had a place in the trading relations between Indian and Arabic areas during the 15th to 18th centuries and must have been an important trade port in the past. The world ‘dwarka’ means ‘door’ or ‘gate’ in Sanskrit, so this ancient port city could have been a gate for foreign sailors who arrived in India.

The Saraswati delta is the Runn of kuchh in Gujarat. And this is the dwarka. It all ads up. The 5000 year sea rise co-incides with the 3000 BC date of the mahabharata. it makes the Indus valley cities around the same date as the Mahabharata. Also the finding of Rakkhigarhi near present day Kurukshetra and that too being an Indus Valley city. This is very exciting.

    Mythologies are related.
Vedas share identical similarities with Zoroastrianism, from the storyline to even the language and grammar used. Zoroastrianism is pivotal to Semitic faiths like Judaism and later, Christianity.
It's very easy to get lost in the aesthetics and ethnic disambiguations of faith but as long as you trace each's origins and history, you start seeing striking similarities.
Essentially, all stories are one, every faith's events are retelling of the same global events. You can piece chronologies by using the periods in which every book of every faith was written/compiled.

    Harappan Civilization :
There are so many Harappan sites in Gujarat that it is likely that Dwaraka or Bet Dwaraka existed as part of that civilization.
Coming to Indian tradition, Mahabharata says that Dwaraka was submerged in the sea. In the Mausala Parva of the Mahabaratha, Arjuna witnesses the submergence of Dvaraka and describes it as follows:
" The sea, which had been beating against the shores, suddenly broke the boundary that was imposed on it by nature. The sea rushed into the city. It coursed through the streets of the beautiful city. The sea covered up everything in the city. I saw the beautiful buildings becoming submerged one by one. In a matter of a few moments it was all over. The sea had now become as placid as a lake. There was no trace of the city. Dvaraka was just a name; just a memory."
One must be careful combining history, archeology and mythology. Today many exaggerations and claims are made by some people, which make it difficult to separate fact from the fiction.

This is very misleading. Dwarka was never a missing or lost city. It was always known, because its an active city and was never abandoned. The fact that the Mahabharat mentions of its sinking proves that it was written many centuries after the temple etc submerged in water. The temple or structures were always clearly visible to the natives on the shores, so its sinking was never a mystery. Just like the Ram Setu is a protruding mountain ledge forming a bridge to Sri Lanka. It was obviously used to be above water, many centuries ago. The people formed mythologies upon these cities and rulers thousands of years after those ancient civilizations.

@t s Muthuraman In a major finding that could impact the understanding of Indian ancestry, the DNA study of a 4500-year-old skeleton found in Rakhigarhi, in Haryana, suggests that modern people in India are likely to have descended from the same population.
These path-breaking insights came to light after scientists were able to sequence genome from the skeleton of a woman and study the archaeological evidence found in Rakhigarhi, a village located some 150 kilometers from Delhi. Rakhigarhi is the largest Harappan site in India.
“The ancient-DNA results completely reject the theory of steppe pastoral or ancient Iranian farmers as source of ancestry to the Harappan population. This research also demolishes the hypothesis about mass human migration during the Harappan time from outside South Asia,” Prof Vasant Shinde, director of the Rakhigarhi project, said.
Shinde said the new breakthrough completely sets aside the Aryan migration or invasion theory. “The skeletal remains found in the upper part of the citadel area of Mohenjodaro belonged to those who died due to floods and not (of those) massacred by the Aryans as hypothesised by Sir Mortimer Wheeler. The Aryan invasion theory is based on very flimsy ground,” Shinde said, adding that the history being taught to us in text books should now be changed.
The DNA revealed that there was no migration or inclusion of any Iran or Central Asian gene into Harappan people. "There is a continuity till the modern times. We are descendants of the Harappans. Even the Vedic culture and (that of) Harappans are same,” Shinde said.
“This research, for the first time, has established the fact that people of Harappan civilisation are the ancestors of most population of South Asia. For the first time, the research indicates movement of people from east to west. The Harappan people's presence is evident at sites like Gonur in Turkmenistan and Shahr-i-Sokhta in Iran. As the Harappans traded with Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persian Gulf and all over South Asia, there are bound to be movements of people resulting into mixed genetic history,” he added.
These revelations assume political significance as there have been demands to rewrite the history books to say that Vedic people were the original inhabitants of the country and they did not come from Central Asia. “Our premise that the Harappans were Vedic people thus received strong corroborative scientific evidence based on ancient DNA studies,” he added.
Another significant claim in the study published in the scientific journal Cell, titled "An Ancient Harappan Genome Lacks Ancestry from Steppe Pastoralists or Iranian Farmers”, is that farming was not brought to South Asia by large-scale movement of people from the Fertile Crescent where farming first arose. Instead, farming started in South Asia by local hunter-gatherers.
As the study results were published, separate statements were issued by Harvard Medical School which had collaborated in the study.
"Even though there has been success with studies of ancient-DNA from many other places, the difficult preservation conditions mean that studies in South Asia have been a challenge," says senior author David Reich, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School, the Broad Institute, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
In this study, Reich, along with post-doctoral scientist Vagheesh Narasimhan and Niraj Rai, who established a new ancient-DNA laboratory at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences in Lucknow, led the preparation of the samples. They screened 61 skeletal samples from a site in Rakhigarhi, the largest city of the Indus valley Civilisation. A single sample showed promise: it contained a very small amount of authentic ancient DNA. The team made over 100 attempts to sequence the sample. Reich says: "While each of the individual data sets did not produce enough DNA, pooling them resulted in sufficient genetic data to learn about population history."
"Ancestry like that in the Indus Valley Civilisation individuals is the primary ancestry source in South Asia today," says Reich. "This finding ties people in South Asia today directly to the Indus Valley Civilisation."
The authors of the study, however, have a word of caution. “Analyzing the genome of only one individual limits the conclusions that can be drawn about the entire population of the Indus Valley Civilization.”

Hey everyone! In Himachal pardesh there is a town by the name Bilaspur. If you search its history and stuff, its really amazing. If you see the Satluj river there, you can spot Temple tops coming out of the water…on 6-8 spots…in a large sq…i think in 800sq metres of area…and if you talk to people there…everyone knows there’s a hugee hidden temple beneath the river and river surface…and it’s really over the world to just watch the site with your eyes…knowing that there is something big under it…and it’s not a guess…you can clearly spot that there is big hidden temple under the mother earth..
