Police ID 4 teens killed in Hickory Hills crash

- The victims were identified Monday as Omarion Rieves, 17, Nathanial Phillips, 17, Destiny Giera, 16, Jemerrio Rieves, 15. Two of the victims, Jemerrio and Omarian, were brothers.
This is why my mother never would let me get in the car with a bunch of kids.

I used to jump hills when I was young too, was so fortunate they didn't make top heavy SUV's when I was young or I wouldn't have lived to see today I am sure as I had several close calls back then. So many of of my school friends died young. My heart grieves for the parents.

As an EMT, one of the worst calls I ever had that I'll never in my life forget was six teens (4 in the back, 2 in the front. The driver was 17 and had his little 13 year old sister with them) who tried the same thing. There was a hill crest that got a lot of teens seriously hurt when they tried to get that negative g-force, stomach floating feeling. Unfortunately for these teens, it was 4am and they were trying to jump the hill. After the street levels off again past the hill, there's a slight left curve. The tires regained traction late enough that the driver severely over corrected to the left, and at an estimated speed of 65 mph, the car began flipping off into the woods, where the top of the car made contact with a tree, completely collapsing the roof all the way in, and having a similar effect on the kids' bodies. After pronouncing each one dead, we heard moaning coming from deeper in the woods. The driver had been ejected through the windshield, and his body was resting on a tree limb about 50 feet deeper in the woods. He had agonal respirations and severe multi-system trauma, but we worked him best we could all the way to the trauma center. He unfortunately died on the way to the operating room in the hospital. This terrible story has a lesson, and that lesson is to talk to your kids about the dangers of driving fast. When they came of driving age, I showed mine pictures I took of the car after the bodies were removed. There were chunks of hair with the scalp, blood, and other gorey substances to convince them that it wasn't just a dad being a paranoid dad. This shouldn't happen to anyone else, regardless of the invincibility you feel as a teenager.
"Red Asphalt" was required watching in public school driver's ed.
That ended when we let private industry charge families for the same thing - but they removed the reality of blood, guts & gore.
No self-respecting industry would let THAT get shown to future customers!!!!
We need MORE of this to show kids the scourge of not-so-smart phones. Instead, it's more self-promotion and concealing the reality of driving.

That just happened here where I live in Florida two brothers were driving with all their friends and they went airborne and hit a cement telephone pole and they all died. Two brothers same family how sad
I’m 51 I remember so many times in my teens my friends and I driving crazy in the snow or racing…it doesn’t matter if your rich or poor, as we were all well off sometimes teens do foolish things…lost two kids in my high school they were going 125 in a brand new 1987 corvette on RT 95 in Providence what was even more sad was one of the fathers saw his son fly by on the highway and tried to get them to slow down but they were flying by and he was one of the first on the scene of the crash a couple of miles down the highway…tragic
The father who bought his kid a brand new Corvette is a moron and in a way he deserves what happened for his wrong decision that caused his son's and another one's lives as well as a lot of suffering.
My heart aches for all the moms, especially the one that lost both sons. My condolences to the families!😔

That is so sad. To have two come from the same family is heart-wrenching. I have teenagers and I worry when they drive with friends their age. I warn them all the time to avoid their reckless friends. My prayers and condolences to all the grieving families and friends.

I tell kids if they're ever in a car with someone who is being reckless or drunk, tell them to stop so they can get out. If the driver refuses pretend you're going to throw up in the car. They'll pull over fast for that and the kid can make an escape. If they tell me it's their friends I point out they are not a friend when they risk your life and the lives of others.
I remember telling my kids the exact same advice.

Ask your local tow company to tell you when a bad one comes in. Some people would call that too traumatic. Not near as being in one.

She is HIGHLY intelligent but I have been telling her for years that someday someone will offer her drugs or alcohol and that person is not your friend. She is now at the age where I tell her the offer will be very soon. I like the wrecking yard idea but that really might be to traumatic for her. I do agree that would be a good idea for most kids though. Thanks for your advice and it sounds like you also wound up aces like your dad!

This is something that always sits in the back of my mind as a mother of now grown kids. It's all about the choices the driver makes in a moment of time and the ability of the passengers to be able to influence the driver to just stop and think about it.
It's something I think we as parents have to resolve in our own hearts - whether our kids are going to be the passengers or the drivers.
It disgusts me how guilty drivers always seem to be the ones who survive wrecks like this.

I remember one day I was the passenger in my car and my son was driving. He was learning to drive in about 3 months time he wanted to take the drivers test to get his license. I kept telling him no, not yet. Then that one day when I was in the car with him. There were his cousin and two of his friends back passengers and one of the teens said aloud " Willy drives like grandma. And I said to the young man, "Yes, and his Grandma has been driving a long long time over 50 years. It was that same day I told my son, it's time you get your license. That's been 10 years ago with no accidents and he still drives like grandma, and yes, his grandma is still driving. And so am I, 60 years and only 2 fender benders because I learned to drive from my mom, his grandma!
This is why I NEVER allowed my children to ride in a vehicle with another teenager. Hickory Hills is such a peaceful place. Praying for the families of these teenagers. This is just tragic.
I swear it’s always the driver that doesn’t die somehow.

Which leaves "driver" destined to live the rest of their life thinking of the tragedy. Some have said here that the drivers "get over it" but that will not be the case for all of the drivers. I cant imagine.

In my day they showed us the most stomach churning pictures of car accidents and victims. Pics no school would show kids today. It didn’t help. Kids think they’re immortal.

Very strong cars! used to work at mercedes and we had a customer who had a head on crash with a dui driver doing 70mph and he was going 60mph only broke his ankles!
Speed alone does not determine whether a car breaks in half or but yes, speed was a factor in this particular accident. In fact, modern cars are designed to crumple and break away so the energy from a crash spreads the force around, throughout the entire vehicle. I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all but I've been in this business for over 30 years. Good day people, drive safe...

Never heard of cars breaking apart as a safety feature, flying debris, exposure of passengers to the elements combined here with separation of engine and fuel tank might have explosive consequences
@@snoopdogg9061 Earlier cars were designed to be rigid without regard to what happened to the car and its occupants during a crash. All modern cars today, of course have crumple zones but most automobile manufacturers (definitely Mercedes), employ the breakaway feature on certain parts of the car. This has nothing to do with parts of the car becoming airborne projectiles because where the vehicle separates during impact is not an issue.

I remember back in the early 80's, there was a very similar crash that killed 5-6 high school teenagers. Someone bought the vehicle salvage, put it on a flatbed truck and parked it in front of the high school. Some people applauded, but others objected saying that it further traumatized the deceased family and friends. I applauded. Sometimes teenagers need to see what happens to a vehicle when you drive it like a dumb-ass. Youth, seat-belts, airbags, and being surrounded by metal doesn't make you invincible.
AN UPDATE: Since this happened long ago, I asked a friend who was more familiar with the accident. My friend said it was the father of a 15-year girl passenger who bought and displayed the salvage. The girl's father was mad and upset with the parents of the driver (a 16-year-old) who bought their son a brand new Ford Mustang for his birthday. The girl's father wanted the crushed and mangled Ford Mustang to be a physical reminder for the driver's parents as to what happens when you give a fast high powered sports car to an immature and inexperience driver.
Seeing the vehicle that was involved in the fatal accident doesn’t do much for some kids. They don’t associate that twisted hunk of metal with driving fast and being careless.
You need to show them a picture of the mangled and dismembered corpses that police take before they remove the bodies. Kids see wrecked cars all the time, on roadsides, in garages, in movies,…so a wrecked car is just another wrecked car. But show them a picture of a dead teenager with his limbs missing and his neck broken….it hits closer to home.

I used to be in these type of rides with friends when I was a teenager , terrifying . Once I got my vehicle I drove with caution . I was always criticized by my friends for driving like a grandma . Teens be alert .

My wife and I raised children in urban USA and had no problems as did most of our contemporaries.
WE TRUSTED THEM and held them to High standards. Our children are in their late 30s now and have been so since their graduation from high school(public schooled ).

My first car was a Vette and I at 16 drowned it. I've always had sports cars, most recently I sold a Stang and I'm getting ready to purchase a new GT.
My granddaughters share my love of sports cars but this article is a wake-up call for me. I've been driving for 52-years and never been in an accident like this. There is a hill nearby that they like to 'jump'. Nevermore. I can't believe I've been so careless with their lives and my own.

I can say I am extremely fortunate to have survived a crash that I caused on my own and hurt my friend (nobody was killed) but I learned a valuable fucking lesson that day and every day I deal with the pain in my lower spine from the impact that compressed it. I deserve every second of the pain I endure since that day, but it completely changed my life for the better and stopped me from ever doing anything stupid again ever since. I can not be thankful enough that me and my friend survived my stupid act that early morning.. I could not live with myself if I had hurt him or anyone else that morning.. Not everyone is as lucky as I am... These types of news reports always bring that day back and remind me to always stay in line.

I was almost in a similar major crash like this more then 25 years ago but I slammed on to the brakes and their was no accident. And I saved my passenger's life and others and all I got was condemnation for my heroic efforts and not even a lunch or thank you.
Several decades ago, when I was in high school, some kids from a neighboring school were attempting the same sort of thing in the early morning hours before the school day, right before dawn. They ran down the hill, hit the upslope, and "caught air"... right into the back of a garbage truck. All four of them were killed instantly. It was a lesson I've never forgotten, and when I was younger and more likely to do stupid things, I never did them with a car.

@@beardeddragon9255 Nah, I already did, and nothing happened to me. I was doing 100 in dirt roads. Pushing car at the max. Then like 20minutes later, my tires slipped in the rain while doing 50. My car got destroyed, but nothing happened to me. Not even a scratch.

As a teen-ager I wanted to go fast but my mom could not afford a car for me...she said...buy your own car. I finally saved enough for a used sedan that was s-l-o-w! It would go 0-60 in about 3 minutes, downhill. I lost my best friend and several others that I went to school with in a variety of accidents over the course of 3 years. All of those fatal wrecks were DWI, DUI, or Racing and high-speed in a hot-rod. Mom knew what she was doing making be buy my own car. I didn't have a dad around. My friends all had really nice camaros or Mustangs and I had a piece of shit, but it kept me alive! Thank you mom!!!

Parents are responsible for ensuring their kids are taught to use vehicles (or guns) safely - and determining whether their teen should (or should not) have access in the first place.
Unless you have info we don't (eg, that the parents didn't teach safe driving skills, taught him to drive recklessly, or knew he was overtly reckless but allowed him to drive anyway) I don't see parental responsibility here.

When I was a teen I was involved in a fatal accident. I was fortunate to survive the Driver was goofing off and blew a Stop sign. We were T-boned and he was killed I walked away unhurt. I am 71 now and I am still hesitant to ride in a car. Those poor parents having to go through such a thing. May those children rest in peace.

Its not weird.... thats normal. There is a reason they call them" bad" decisions. It was more than one bad decision in this case tho, the driver made multiple bad decisions and every person in the car made a decision to get in the vehicle with someone like that.

Sometimes you don't know what's a bad decision until the damage is done. I've hoped in the car with plenty of people who drove safe and then suddenly became reckless. It's easy to say stop or let me out but the person behind the wheel controls that destiny.

I noticed that and had to watch the video again to make sure that was what I saw.
I didn’t get my license till I was 20 in the 80s. It was safe to walk everywhere and the transit system was pretty good in Pittsburgh. Looking back it was probably a blessing. . This was heartbreaking to watch..
