The ecosystem has greatly changed since wolves were last around. The chances of them coming into contact with humans is highly likely. The UK is small. So small, we fit in the state of Texas. Problem is, we're no longer confined to just a few scattered towns and villages. We have huge city's. Back in the day, there was nothing much to do out in the "wilderness" other than hunt but modern British people use the countryside as a place to get away from the city and thanks to off road vehicles and better equipment, we're able to cover massive areas and there isn't anywhere we don't go. Back in the day, only rich explorers bothered to climb Snowden for example. Everyone else was too busy working 15 hours a day just to get food in their mouths. These days though, EVERYONE is rich by comparison and we all live lives of leisure and can and DO use the countryside. There is no land anymore in the UK that can actually be considered wild. Not like in say Russia where they have Siberia. There are parts of Siberia that sees an average human footfall of 1 person per hundred years. George says in this that they are not quite sure why wolves prefer deer rather than sheep. It would make perfect sense because sheep are associated with humans and there is an increased risk in hunting sheep over deer, so natural selection would of preferentially selected wolves that chose to hunt deer over livestock.
I Agree with George we have to reintroduce them whether we like it or not we just have to keep fighting for their rights and for their freedom even if it takes a long period of time, but it shouldn't be whether people want them here or not its what mother nature needs to keep her animals in the ecosystem healthy and stable, and not letting them become extinct from the idiots. John P it’s not bullshit to put it in a simple way for you to understand they make animals like deer move around so they’re not constantly snacking on tree saplings making it easier for forest to grow making a sustainable eco system
John P which is why regeneration is not occuring. The only areas where woodland and vegetation is coming back is where the land is fenced off from deer or where there is deer culling as well as deer stalking. However there is a moral reason to bring wolves back. We killed every single last one of them even when they didn’t bother us. Also in some areas we don’t do deer stalking and deforestation is still occuring in some parts of Scotland. Wolves can help speed up the recovery of woodland. Also in some areas deer numbers are to high for the carrying capacity and so they end up starving to death and disease can spread very quickly amongst the dense deer populations. Wolves will removed these diseased animals. Just because we do deer stalking does not mean we should not return native species to our land. That is just greedy and selfish.
Europe in UK, there were Lions and Mammoths and Wooly Rhinos. I would like to one day selectively breed and or clone these animals and re introduce them to fill in the Niches left unfilled for thousands and thousands of years.
The California Department of Fish & Game biologists have been saying wolves have recently returned to the state. I saw a pair of wolves in the Sierra Nevada mountains decades before their statement. It was one of the most wild & beautiful things I've ever seen. I was recently talking to another mountain backpacker who also had seen wolves decades ago. We both just didn't talk to people about them because, well, trophy hunters are stupid & like to shoot predators tbinking they are doing the right thing for prey species. In a bad winter years ago we lost THOUSANDS of deer to starvation. A healthy wolf population would have been a better solution. Human "management" of a species frequently makes things worse.
I would fully support bringing wolves back to the Scottish Highlands. It would bring more balance to our ecosystem, and would also minimise deer hunting in these regions.
I completely agree! I have never heard it explained so eloquently. This just makes common sense. I hope more people can come to realize that wolves are not just a beautiful creature, but they can stabilize what has been broken for far too long.
Sheep guarding dogs like the Maremma, Anatolian Shepherd etc. ( not herding dogs) have been a tried and true solution for protecting sheep and other livestock from canine predators in many parts of the world for generations.
Wolves must be the most adaptable predator of all. George is right to point out that wolves in the ecosystem will cascade balance and benefit down to the bottom of the food chain. Nature will always find a new equilibrium with or without our meddling but it will be a healthier equilibrium in their presence despite the difficulties and associated problems. With the scourge of shark fishing in our oceans today it's like we don't understand or don't even care about the damage we're doing to the world and what will surely be to ourselves.
Because of how quickly the wolf can breed, I think we should hold re-introducing wolves to the UK until we have successfully re-introduced the Lynx. The reason for this is because Lynx are very reclusive animals and tend to avoid all human contact at all cost and they don't breed as quickly as wolves do. If the Lynx can integrate into the UK successfully, it might be easier for people to get their heads around reintroducing the wolf in the UK. It has to be a slow process in order for it to be successful.
The problem is however is that large herbivores like red deer are not the usual prey of lynx and so wouldn’t have as much positive impact on the environment as much as what wolves can
Predators generally aren't very prolific breeders for what should be obvious reasons. Wolves even less so - in a wolf pack only the alpha male and alpha female breed.
It’s so important to help the wolves to go back in to the wild. It’s not their fault that human being is not at its peak of consciousness. We are the ones off the balance here, not any other organism. I agree with George and it’s all about re-educating people. Not just about wolves. If we won’t, the future generations might be working hard in the lab with dishes full of DNA samples to try to bring the wolves back...like we do now with many other species.
All I can say is when they reintroduced the wolf to Yellowstone National Park in the US, it balanced out the ecosystem and now other species that were on the brink are flourishing! And then earth has had a total turn around as well. They've helped the whole ecosystem flora and fauna are thriving. So it would be the best thing to bring them back❤❤❤
I like the idea of wolves too, but here in Norway in rural ereas, wolves have become so habituated to people that they walk around doors and pluck pets from gardens. Young wolves goes on killing sprees of sheep because the temptation of easy prey is high, and also unnatural. Not to mention most sheep breeds are really clumsy whool balls. So even though it would be great with wolves, it still is quite problematic for those people who get exposed to them the most. If wolves do not get uncomfortable encounters with people then they will start to think we aren't dangerous, and that in turn makes them a higher threat then a wolf with proper fear of people.
I doubt they will suffer considering all the prey they have. Maybe if they get kicked by a red deer or reindeer and get injured maybe but not if they are skilled at hunting.
At 7.43 there's the lovely Maddie [Maddad the longest liuved wolf in the world! She was at the Wolf Watch rescue centre in Wales all her life from a pup along with her brother. Lived to 22 years old! Such a beautiful creature.
Hi Animal Watch, very interesting interview. It reminds me of the political debates going on in Germany for the last five or so years and they are now increasing. Here is the short story: When Germany was divided into East and West, the wolf had become extinct in West Germany and has therefore been declared a protected species. In East Germany that was different, wolves that migrated from Poland or Russia, were killed. As East Germany did not have a hard border with Poland, wolves could easily migrate into East Germany, but not into West Germany, as the two German countries had a hard (very hard) border. After the reunification in 1989/1990 that has changed and as the reunification was more like an assimilation of East Germany into West Germany, former East Germany adapted West German laws and the wolf landed on their endangered species list. This led to wolves migrating and today it is thought that over 70 packs of wolves now live in German forests and the political debates of Wolf-Management continue. So far only wolves (and now don't laugh) "that do not comply with the rules" (I said not to laugh) will get taken out. Personally, I'd worry a lot more about wild boar roaming German forests than I'd worry about wolves, as humans are not really on the menu of wolves. We're not on the menu of wild boars either, but there have been a lot of cases where humans sustained severe injuries and even died after crossing a wild boar, but the documented incident in which a human was killed by a wolf in Germany, happened about 180 or more years ago. Here is a video you may also want to share George Monbiot. Thanks for you wolf videos, I really do enjoy them: th-cam.com/video/2HUVpKkTTtI/w-d-xo.html
In some parts of the US, there's a huge deer overpopulation problem. As such, wolves have been re-introduced into those areas. The only issue is, it drives the deer into populated areas where their population is only controlled by the cars that hit them. No idea what the solution is from there.
The farmers don't want the trees to return or more forests because they loose the feeding ground for their sheep. They need pastures ,and not wildlife habitat.
although i’m not an expert so my opinion shouldn’t really count, i think it might be a good solution to begin introducing small packs to some unpopulated hebridean islands as opposed to the highlands. in the inner isles, the environment is similar to the highlands (read: completely ravaged by sheep farming) so might be a good place to test drive some reintroduction as opposed to just letting a pack into the highlands where there are lots of sheep flocks, hunters and amateur hikers & other tourists who may be uneducated about how to act around large wild animals.
In all honesty - maybe I've been shooting in the wrong place, but deer don't seem to be so prevalent or even make themselves seen that often that I or anyone I've participated with would be able to shoot one over our shoulder. Wouldn't even get a pigeon let alone a deer and there's far more of those. I believe perhaps introducing wolves would only create rivalry and possible dangerous or unwanted scenarios between hunters and wolves or even worse, hikers and wolves - if the wolves see said persons as intruders or if pups or a much needed corpse is around. And someone else mentioned something which hits a good note - we are at 56+ million people in Britain and there aren't enough vastly unpopulated or unfarmed lands. I love and respect all animals to some rational degree but do we need families with young children to get savaged on their campsites. If wolves are introduced and they simply cannot sustain themselves because of human activity in its current vast quantity, then surely it'll all have been a waste of time.
Brining them back is pointless. We certainly wouldn't be doing it for the poor wolves. We'd just be doing it for our own vanity and to ease our consciences over past wrongs. It would end up causing more harm than good however.
Very happy to see this video.Could I suggest as a follow-up the re wilding of wolves in Yellowstone Park, USA.It,s effects has been awsome. The wolves in your video were gorgeous. Thanks.
I'm from kielder in the northumberland it's been officially decided we are having the lynx reintroduced into the forest and I and many people in the village only know of 3 people in the area that it'll happy about it because the people wanting to bring them in has been telling a load of bull saying "it'll bring £60 million into kielder per year" and all that crap. They even told understandably concerned farmers that "lynx don't eat sheep" even though we have been assured by farmers in Norwegian countries that they do on the regular! As if a lynx is going to go for a rabbit over a sheep? We are also one of the last forests in England with the red squirrel which a lynx could easily catch and eat and no one is doing jack s**t about helping them! The people wanting to bring them here did a questionnaire and told the MPs that "90% of the local people were for the reintroduction of the lynx" so a local who lives in the village made a questionnaire of his own and gave it to all the same people and found that more than 90% were against it but we are getting them anyway because no one cares about what we think 👌 we've been lied to by people who basically said 'hey those animals are pretty we should release them into the largest man made forest in Europe without doing any research and tell everyone who goes against us that they are wrong'
Not saying this guy hasn't done his research he seems to know what he is talking about and obviously a wolf wouldn't waste it's time on a squirrel or something like that
If you want to get inconvenient animals out of the ecosystem get rid of people. It's one thing to say Save the Tiger when it's not in your backyard, but would you welcome them here? As it turns out,I would!
Feel free to ask a Swedish sheep farmer in Värmland how nice the re-introduced wolves are to have as neighbors. Ask a Sami how safe their herds of reindeer are these days. And feel free to ask how much help the both of them receives in terms of compensation which once they were promised from a capital far away. If someone argue for wolf re-introduction, remember to listen and see if they actually have plans regarding wolf-population control. Are the people in favor a vocal minority of animal rights activists living in a city far away or are the local population and farmers affected actually for it? Will the farmers actually be compensated for each animal killed? how would you fund that? "often the wolves will be shot by complete idiots" -More often than not people who shoot wolves are the people suffering from their animals being killed, people who then get sentenced up to 3 years in prison. (A harsher sentence than most cases of rape or pedophilia in Sweden) People who have no one to turn to for help with their farms being attacked. Remember well that there are two sides of a coin is all I am saying, if you want wolves back in your nation - feel free to learn from our mistakes in how we handled the very same matter.
So by your logic any outside influence (out of your control) threatening something of yours automatically renders your viability as an owner/parent/partner etc null and void? - An angry co-worker with a key and a grudge means that the department of motor vehicles should be banning you from owning a car? Or a criminal breaking into your house means you are no longer eligible to own your own home simply because you failed to ward of the burglar? That's insanity. Your thoughts and wishes to dictate others way of life seems a bit narrow minded, surely? The same reasoning for people being actively for wolves being free and roaming around, could just as easily be applied on letting the Sami people have their traditional roaming herds of reindeer and their way of life and traditions being preserved. The larger herds are because we are no longer living in a world of a spartan way of life, children needs clothes, food and more often than not want presents and that helicopter needs to be fueled same as with those snowmobiles, their cars, house/vehicle Mortgage loans, firewood needs to be purchased for the winter and so on etc, the world has changed. Especially for the people whose land we took. Sheep-farmers are now by the government demanded to purchase expensive anti-predator-fences which they can't afford and when they looked for some form of monetary subsidy, the local government reported them to the police. Effectively turning it into a Catch-22.
Pwningnewbssince89 Livestock protection dogs could help with that I mean the kangal is used to protect goats from big cats in Africa so it could easily guard against wolves. And once a stable population the UK government can give out game tags for hunting to keep the population in check.
Also fun fact: In Baltic paganism the goddess of the forests is said to be able to turn into a dire wolf. And can give people the ability to turn into wolves, albeit wolves are said to know how to recognize them so they would kill them if they tried joining their pack.
Wait... so the Wolves were completely eradicated from the country cuz I know the Irish Wolfhounds were bred to be used for that specific reason, but there's really no wolves in the UK well hopefully UK can I accept this cuz one wolves are beautiful into they control some of the animal population which hopefully they get rid of some of the past that or not supposed to be there.
We need to reintroduce shepards too, not just let sheeps go anywhere and expect them to be safe. That said, wolves doesn't kill many sheeps compared to any other sheep-eating carnivore out there, this is an important fact farmers need to understand.
This is amazing. In Morocco we had the largest Lions, the Atlas lions but they are now extinct due to farmers shooting them as they would kill live stock. But that was becuase people were moving into their territory in the atlas. Instead of humans moving durther dowm the the moutain and closer to flat land they instesd impeaded on the Lions land. Now they are gone for good. There are no atlas lions in captivity. 😥
I think people need to look at Yellowstone National Park in the US for a model of how wolves and ranchers get along. There was an enormous organized resistance from a powerful group of ranchers who banded together to fight the re-introduction of wolves, bc they had been entirely eradicated from the Park by 1930. The ranchers wanted to keep it that way, and didn’t care about the ecology of the Park. During the 1980s and 1990s, when wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone and Idaho, careful statistics have shown that domestic predation is far less than was feared, but bison also had to be reintroduced bc at one point there were only 24 in the entire Park! There are now 94 wolves in Yellowstone, living in several packs. People who’d like to read more should go to the National Park Service website (nps.gov), and do a search for “wolf restoration.” The history is extremely well documented.
Humans are selfish beings. It's that simple. Wolves were here thousands of years before us, they were more abundant then humans were. But humans being humans, they were killed off due to them getting in the way of our money making. Take inspiration from the Yellowstone Park reintroduction! The ecosystem was amazingly improved! I really, really HOPE, that this happens in my lifetime. Edit: I mean, could imagine being in a tent in the Scottish highlands and hearing the chilling howl of a wolf. It would be something for sure...
living in the scottish highlands i full support getting wolves back up here

Daryl Weston Ban hunting and let predators handle prey and balance nature for us.
So so lovely and beautiful. Take good care of the dogs and wolves. Thanks, neka
Maybe next time, I will adopt one of the dogs and will ask advice from you, neka

FAVORITE CHANNEL, love every video you post. I want to possibly study wolves in particular one day.
Someone send this to everyone against reintroducing wolves.
Always look forward now to seeing what you will be posting next. Enjoy your videos. :)
Wolves are amazing!!!!
I would fully support bringing wolves back to the Scottish Highlands. It would bring more balance to our ecosystem, and would also minimise deer hunting in these regions.
I love wolves 🐺
Your not the only one utterly adore wolf's
I completely agree! I have never heard it explained so eloquently. This just makes common sense. I hope more people can come to realize that wolves are not just a beautiful creature, but they can stabilize what has been broken for far too long.
Really enjoyed this interview.
I love wolves their so spiritaul
Sheep guarding dogs like the Maremma, Anatolian Shepherd etc. ( not herding dogs) have been a tried and true solution for protecting sheep and other livestock from canine predators in many parts of the world for generations.
👏👏👏👏 I love all your videos Anneka
Bring back the wolf! bring back the wolf! Bring back the wolf! Bring back the wolf!
Great interview & thanks for sharing.
Lynx would massicre sheep and pets
So it would be the best thing to bring them back❤❤❤
Hi my sweet and nice friend ! Thank you for your video ! 🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺😍😍
Fantastic interview :) It was fascinating listening to George’s answers. I really hope wolves will be re-introduced to Ireland too.
wow amazing. so glad this is finally happening.
Have you tried importing livestock guardian dogs, such as the Great Pyrenees? These dogs will protect flocks with a minimum of supervision.
I want to see them live in the uk, even though they will suffer, it's worth it. That's how animals live every day.
Excellent video. Highest Blessings to Nature
Hi Animal Watch,
very interesting interview. It reminds me of the political debates going on in Germany for the last five or so years and they are now increasing. Here is the short story:
When Germany was divided into East and West, the wolf had become extinct in West Germany and has therefore been declared a protected species.
I hate to say this but we need fenceses to ceep the animals and peaple safe
The farmers don't want the trees to return or more forests because they loose the feeding ground for their sheep. They need pastures ,and not wildlife habitat.
Wolves are reestablishing in the netherlands at the moment. If they can pull it off...
although i’m not an expert so my opinion shouldn’t really count, i think it might be a good solution to begin introducing small packs to some unpopulated hebridean islands as opposed to the highlands. in the inner isles, the environment is similar to the highlands (read: completely ravaged by sheep farming) so might be a good place to test drive some reintroduction as opposed to just letting a pack into the highlands where there are lots of sheep flocks, hunters and amateur hikers & other tourists who may be uneducated about how to act around large wild animals.
Start with the Scottish Highlands if you must. Please bring them back!!!
Rewrite the fairytale and make the sheep the villain. What a brilliant insight.
Yassssss
I would love to see this in my life time.
Bringing back wolf's to Britten would be utterly amazing
If wolves are introduced and they simply cannot sustain themselves because of human activity in its current vast quantity, then surely it'll all have been a waste of time.
im doing a presentation about this and the video was very use full
Brining them back is pointless. We certainly wouldn't be doing it for the poor wolves. We'd just be doing it for our own vanity and to ease our consciences over past wrongs.
It would end up causing more harm than good however.
How to remake dire wolves : Breed Wild Dogs With Canadian Wolves, and that's the closest you can get to that
On the continent they have dogs that look after the herds of sheep. The wolves won't go near them.
Very happy to see this video.Could I suggest as a follow-up the re wilding of wolves in Yellowstone Park, USA.It,s effects has been awsome. The wolves in your video were gorgeous. Thanks.
Wyoming returned Wolves to Yellowstone, I don’t understand why people are against them returning to the UK excluding general ignorance
A beautiful animal.
Let wolfs back in
Bring them back.
"often the wolves will be shot by complete idiots"
-More often than not people who shoot wolves are the people suffering from their animals being killed, people who then get sentenced up to 3 years in prison.
Pwningnewbssince89
Livestock protection dogs could help with that I mean the kangal is used to protect goats from big cats in Africa so it could easily guard against wolves. And once a stable population the UK government can give out game tags for hunting to keep the population in check.
Can't wait!!
Great news! Here in Lithuania wolves are having a revival aswell.
Also fun fact:
In Baltic paganism the goddess of the forests is said to be able to turn into a dire wolf. And can give people the ability to turn into wolves, albeit wolves are said to know how to recognize them so they would kill them if they tried joining their pack.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes.
Yes bring it back walls they are such an amazing creature
100% this should happen all over the country, farmers should get money to help with fencing etc
Precious
Wait... so the Wolves were completely eradicated from the country cuz I know the Irish Wolfhounds were bred to be used for that specific reason, but there's really no wolves in the UK well hopefully UK can I accept this cuz one wolves are beautiful into they control some of the animal population which hopefully they get rid of some of the past that or not supposed to be there.
Meanwhile, the sheep think it's a baaaaad idea.
Shooting should be fined heavily and or even serve jail time... especially if there are compensation plans for farmers.
We need to reintroduce shepards too, not just let sheeps go anywhere and expect them to be safe. That said, wolves doesn't kill many sheeps compared to any other sheep-eating carnivore out there, this is an important fact farmers need to understand.
selfish farmers will always kick up a fuss
When did you tape that interview? I could see lilac in the garden, as well as a green lawn, so it must have been last spring?
This is amazing. In Morocco we had the largest Lions, the Atlas lions but they are now extinct due to farmers shooting them as they would kill live stock. But that was becuase people were moving into their territory in the atlas. Instead of humans moving durther dowm the the moutain and closer to flat land they instesd impeaded on the Lions land. Now they are gone for good. There are no atlas lions in captivity. 😥
We have loads of space still for wolves & Lynx. One of my dreams is to be hiking / camping and hearing Wolves howling.
Actually, we don't. And that's the problem.
Yes Please.
Make it happen!!
Perhaps the wolves destined to live with people, like yours and mine, can play a part in educating humanity in terms of their magnificent qualities.
Half the people wanting wolves in the Highlands live in England, what about the poor farmers
Compensate them. Build electric fences. Introduce livestock guardian dogs.
The European grey wolf went extinct in England back in 1700 centurie
0:35 you know what he looks like he is paying attention very well but he's really thinking about a football game LOL
No, my dad's more keen on rugby haha😂👌🏻
