Unfortunately not true. The 4002 could not be programmed. It does detect the size of record to play and switches automatically to 45rpm for 7” records. The earlier 4000 was actually rather more complex as it had an ac motor (early 4002s did as well) but had a built in strobe as could track both in and out so could play records cut in reverse (pointless so deleted in the 4002!) The line of Perspex with the speed controls in the 4002 was originally a lit path with a pointer so that you could mark positions on a record with a number - equally superfluous! The platter of the 4000 and early 4002 was also very heavy - the later 4002 was a sub-platter which was light and had an aluminium platter with radial raised ridges which again was much lighter. Interestingly, sound quality was much the same despite this and the decks were far cheaper to produce. I have a 4000, 4004 ( remote control version of the 4002 ) and a 4001, ( the less said about this the better!)
My friend still has his from 1978. He used it to drive his McIntosh amp/preamp. It always sounded good.
