PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ANY TECHNICAL QUESTIONS! Steve is always happy to answer any connection questions via email at soundsheavenly.com if you are in UK or Europe. For personal reasons, I apologise that I can't offer cables or technical support advice if you are outside UK or Europe (please remember that I'm just one person and I get well over 100 enquiries a day so unfortunately I can't give free technical support to everyone). I am sorry that I can't reply to technical questions in TH-cam comments, this is only possible via my website. Thanks for your patience and understanding. Sorry about the background noise - this is a busy workshop with numerous products being repaired as we were filming. Thanks Steve - very useful video as always to see how B&O turntables are refurbished. I have used a Beogram TX2 refurbished a few years ago by my local Spelier dealer in Brussels which has always worked well. I bought a refurbished MMC 1 cartridge from a specialist repairer in Germany especially for CD4 playback, although the quality varies according to the disc and the 40k hertz signal for the surround.
Thanks, glad the video was helpful. The CD4 quad playback system was an amazing idea, but this does depend on the quality of the discs as it is working at the limits of the vinyl technology.
Lovely to see! I still use my Beogram 2200 that I bought new 1980. I have refurbished mine by cannibalising from another 2200 I bought on auction that had the pieces working that was defect on mine but apart from that was a wreck😊
Yes, I love these classic Beograms. I can recommend SoundSmith, who make the styli on the Beogram 4000c, I use their products at home and I'm happy with them
Very interesting - especially to see that they are also repairing the 4000. I confess to using very little of my B&O these days - but still have three BG 400X type decks - a 4000, and 4004 and the infamous 4001! Clearly doing a roaring trade - I did think of getting one of the original 4000c models but very expensive and in my case not really going to add anything. I had a Soundsmith cartridge but the black body put me right off it so gave it away. Sticking with my silver MMC20CLs and the custom MMC20SH for the 4001!
@@soundsheavenly The 4000 was an iconic original model, but the drive system is better on the later models (4002,4004,6000 etc). The 4000 drive was quite a bit over engineered, f.ex. it could actually play a record backwards (if the motor direction was changed), since the arm could move both ways. Which is not very useful, so on later models the drive was simplified to just moving the arm inwards. Another drawback (which is by no way B&Os fault) is that it was based on a series of integrated circuits, that are no longer available. So in case of faults in the logic, you are in deep trouble. But they are all amazing turntables, and I am warming up to get my 4002 in the basement and polishing it up. I fixed the arm system last year; they are prone to the old lubrication hardening, so it had to be taken apart to get things moving again. But even after so many years, it is still a little engineering marvel...
Yes I like the fact that it was over engineered. The 4000 also had an AC motor (changed to DC on the 4002) which makes refurbishing it more complicated.
Having the capacitors changed in one of my three Beomaster 2400's took my breath away when I paid the bill. I can only imagine the price of this exercise. It's no longer possible for me to have B & O serviced locally.
Cool video! I've been doing some work on Thorens players lately and i'm wondering if a B&O would sound better than my td145. They sure do look the part, keep up the good work!
Thanks Steve 👍👍 in your opinion is it the design that made the Beogram 4000 so iconic in comparison to other Beogram decks ?? I have a Beogram 3300 how would that compare to the earlier 4000 ? Which was 1970s and the 3300 was a short lived deck of the 80s ? Thanks Simon
@@Smog104 The Beogram 3000 was a Thorens TD 124 with a B&O arm. A very nice turntable, but I must admit the Thorens drive is the best part of the combo...
Hi, that is an interesting observation. The orange/red dot usually refers to "power off" on B&O products, so on those Beograms, the button is a play/stop button (pressing it while the Beogram is playing should stop the music).
@@soundsheavenly I bought my first beogram turntable 5500, it has a beautiful design. But I sent it back since it wasn't working as expected. Now I was curious to understand. If so some models have the stop button on the front side and some don't? thanks for you expertise
@@maxxflyer Each Beogram model will be different, but usually the buttons have a physical touch switch that presses in, so they are not usually capacitive. However, they will allow you to operate the basic functions of the Beogram without opening the lid on many Beogram models.

Hi Steve, I’ve got a B&O 7000, it sounds scratchy, it has built in preamp, I’m wondering if it’s the signal path or the cartridge? It sounds great for a record or two, then it would loose the left channel. Please help. Very much appreciated.
The most common cause of issues like this is the cartridge, as the original B&O cartridge will be over 30 years old by now. I use Sound Smith cartridges on my B&O at home and I am very pleased with the results
I never owned a Bang & Olufsen table nor have I seen one in person. My question is, is it impossible for someone to make some type of adapter so one can use a common cartridge on these instead of the proprietary B&O cartridges? I really don't understand why it can't be done? Can someone please explain?
One of the many unique parts of the B&O turntable design is the moving micro cross (MMC) cartridge, that is built differently to regular moving coil or moving magnet designs. This gives high quality sound with a much smaller mass than any other cartridge design, hence why you can't convert a Beogram to use normal bulky cartridges.
@@soundsheavenly I do understand that their cartridge has a unique connection making other fits impossible but the arm can't be adjusted for weight, antiskating and such? I want one just because of the design but due to the hassle of the cartridges I don't bother.
There is more to it than just adjusting the weight and the fittings, the tone arm is designed for a low total mass, which just doesn’t work when a heavier cartridge is used. It is worth using the correct cartridge for the best results, there is no way around this
