These kinds of videos don't surprise me, as I've seen a bunch like them before. In one of these videos, the question about who fought in the US civil war came up, and a young lady answered the Nazis vs the Germans. Another young lady, upon being questioned when the US was founded, answered 1994. The interviewer played along and facetiously asked how she knew, and she answered that she was "kinda smart".
I don't think the "how many in a dozen" question is limited to the U.S. A few years ago, in the supermarket, I was wanting to buy some stamps. Went to the checkout at the customer service desk and asked for half a dozen 1st class stamps. This triggered a vacant look from the young lady, so I asked again. The response this time was "how many is half a dozen?". Facepalm. All the facepalms.
Well it is especially embarrassing in the US where the dozen still is used in daily life. In most countries the dozen is something from the far past like the so called baker dozen which was 13 in order to avoid the harsh penalties in medieval times.
I had exactly the same thing in a McDonalds recently. I asked for half a dozen sachets of sugar. The response from the young woman who was serving me? "How many is that? Five?" 🤣
Youngsters of today didn't grow up in the 60s. They probably struggle to know how many lbs in a stone, or oz in a lb, or pints in a gallon, fl oz in a pint, or yds in a chain or in a furlong. And why the hell should they? A dozen is another obsolete quantity.

There are just too many people who spend their lives posting pictures of what they ate for breakfast or some such nonsense. I am sure if you asked these same people about the history of the Kardashians they could go into untold detail, all of which would be factually correct.
On one of the videos he did. The “interviewee” reeled off every one of them. Edit: I would say to the point that British people wouldn’t be able to answer similar questions about the UK, all the questions he was asking them, the information is widely spread through mass media. Oh wow.. I absolutely luv your reactions... On this one, you were clearly gob smacked.. your reactions to this one 😂😂 so funny. Thanks for the laughs 😊
The most enjoyable part of this video by far was your reaction to the answers Amanda. It seemed a mixture of annoyance, embarrassment and shock. I wouldn’t be too downhearted though, I’m sure some young Brits would struggle as well. I do agree, that these were probably the cherry picked answers from hundreds of people questioned. All for affect.
No country has a monopoly on people not knowing things 😉 However, if you’ve ever watched the film (very funny) 'Idiocracy' - it should serve as a warning not a template 😊
I remember Jay Leno asking random Americans on the streets and they knew almost nothing. There are many videos like this and they all show the same thing. Even American youtubers are ignorant. I saw the brilliant British comedian Al Murray talking abot the Falklands war and he said that it was a war about penguins. He said that they needed penguins to make Guinness and when you cook the birds they make the foam on top of a Guinness. The two youtubers looked at each other and said: "Is that true"? But then, ignorant people are to be found everywhere.
In my college chemistry class in the 70s we were struggling with the concept of a "Mole," which, we were told, was a number of atoms or molecules equivalent to Avogadro's number. To make it simple for us, our teacher compared a Mole to a dozen, which can be 12 units of anything. I see that using the term "a dozen" to explain an unfamiliar concept might not work too well nowadays...
How hard can it be - they only need to know the history of one country and learn how to count. I also worry about the dropping in standards of history and knowledge here too.
I think a lot of those things are learned along the way of growing up, like osmosis. General knowledge. And with the newer generations spending more time playing video games snd watching tik-tok instead of interacting with other people - family, friends etc. they dont get the chance to learn stuff.
Good points. If one thinks about it: How do we get to know things? It's not because we're just born special. All the things we know are due to a combination of personal experience and interaction with other people (via books, lessons & conversations). Limit any one of those elements and general knowledge WILL decrease, doesn't matter who you are.
You're probably right that thousands were interviewed to find someone who couldn't answer simple questions but the range of knowledge that these people lacked is still amazing
I wish that he had asked me "Who fought in the Civil War?" My responses: 1. Which Civil War? There have been many. There is one going on right now in Sudan. OR 2. The Cavaliers and the Roundheads (Crown and Parliament) in the Seventeenth Century.
the amount of states , some people think the Puerto rico and theres another one i cant remember (i am british) , so that could be seen as sort of understandable. i am trying to be charitable
I would describe myself as a deeply spiritual person, so I'm not really into knowledge. By "deeply spiritual" I mean "colossally fkn stupid". But that's absolutely fine, because I'm so deeply spiritual.
You’re a very intelligent American, you move to Britain I could understand people, not knowing what a bakers dozen is, but I can’t understand them, not knowing what a dozen is most children should know that by the age of about 7
These kinds of videos are made to get a reaction and feed the belief held by many non-Americans that a lot of you guys are basically ignorant and don't care about that. I have to tell you that we have our share of ignoramuses as well and we have to take these videos a with a pinch of salt. However, i must say that I have a friend who lives in Tennessee who sent his 3 children to private schools because he felt the public ones just weren't up to scratch. All 3 went to university . Now i don't know if that is indicative of anything and have no way of knowing, but every American I have met was not in the slightest bit uneducated except maybe this guy I met in Amsterdam who came from Minnesota . I got chatting to him and asked him if he knew of a local restaurant he could recommend. He mentioned Susie's Café being just round the corner . Anyway, I wandered around the corner but could not find any such café, and it took me awhile before I realised he meant Suisse Cafe. Understandable mistake I guess if you don't know any French, but then he was a locksmith from Minnesota. The recommendation was good, by the way
That was funny, I would like to see a British 🇬🇧 version, most of us should have a basic knowledge of our country's but sometimes people get a "Brain fart" over the simplest of questions. Great video. 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇲
Hi Amanda, I am English & it's clear you had a better education than most US citizens because your English diction is clearer than most including my US friends. Top marks. P.S. I love your tats. 😉
They asked a few if you travel at 60mph for an hour, how far will you have travelled. Not a clue any of them. They then asked detailed Kardashian questions, they knew every one.
Don't worry. America has Mark Twain. The wittiest, wisest bastard who ever lived. All his quotes are gold dust, and usually absolutely hilarious. He's helping to put his thumb on the scale to balance it all out.
Amanda, I have seen a similar video made in the UK of young people being asked questions about the UK. Sorry to say many gave similar answers or did not know. Don't be too sad, my American wife was similarly embarrassed.
The video IS representative of my experiences: I had to explain to a young US friend that each of their States has 2 Senators: 100 Senators, 50 States - seems obvious to me. She flat-out refused to believe me, and ended up Googling it. FFS! A 2nd year London university student (from Florida) looked up from her text book to tell me, "Oh my gaad - you guys spell words wrong!" Seemed to be the first book she'd actually got round to reading after 2 years of "studying".......
Amanda, I'm English 66 years old, I have travelled in America extensively. I have amazing American friends. Let me exaggerate, there are two types of Americans. There are Educated Americans, who probably have traveled the world a bit, then there is the rest of the Americans, who are OK to talk with but don't expect too much. Look, you live in the UK, Go to Glasgow on the street, but with questions referenced to Great Britain.
This can't be true can it 😂😂😂😂Amanda i bet its very similar here in the uk some kids think milk comes from the supermarket not cows and don't know what chips are made from😂😂
I think part of the problem here is that modern tech makes it really easy to inhabit a very narrow world - to specialise in one thing (clothes, music, cars, celebrities - whatever) and not to have incidential exposure to things outside that niche. In generations gone by, if you watched TV or read print ed media you got all kinds of stuff and yes, you chose what you watched, but you couldn't really help seeing other stuff in the process. That's not ALL the problem, but I think it's a factor.
Yes. I think it's a significant factor. And I have to remind myself that, had I been born only 20 years ago, I'd have been exactly the same. Also, it is my own generation (born in the 60's) who helped to sculpt the world for today's younger generation by providing them with modern tech that is so addictive. If anybody deserves a dirty look, it's us, not the kids.
Having met many people from USA I despair at the lack of general knowledge in younger generations. Also many who do not travel have little or no knowledge of other countries around the globe
Amanda, just when you said, "I am by no means a genius", my brain was ahead of my mouth cos I was thinking, "well you're an American",,,, but don't feel bad, we have more than our fair share of dummies over here in your own UK 😂

I'm quite confident that even in the US (which is not the greatest country on earth when it comes to education - and anything else, really, tbh) those weren't the only ones he had to ask.
look i am British and proud to be the Americans with faults have come up with brain blowing inventions that have changed the world
Was that not Donald Trump's Alma mater😂🤣😂
The big question is how many people did he have to question to find so many idiots?
I remember Jay Leno asking random Americans on the streets and they knew almost nothing. There are many videos like this and they all show the same thing. Even American youtubers are ignorant. I saw the brilliant British comedian Al Murray talking abot the Falklands war and he said that it was a war about penguins. He said that they needed penguins to make Guinness and when you cook the birds they make the foam on top of a Guinness. The two youtubers looked at each other and said: "Is that true"? But then, ignorant people are to be found everywhere.
I have watched a few .i always thought it was a wind uo ...good vid again ❤❤
:))
Many young Brits are completely ignorant too.
It’s an age thing, mostly.
It is very scary. That the people asked a small group of people but the the fact is, Crazy that those people graduated even grammar school.
What do they teach in schools today America and Britain
Good job they didn't ask how many are in a bakers dozen. Where 12 is a standard dozen but a bakers dozen is 13.
"Who fought in The Civil War?". " I don't bloody know! There must have been at least hundreds of thousands of them".
I am no american but those questions about U S history was so easy
Hi Amanda, I'd like to visit the US states one day - the whole dozen of them !
Ha ha , I would also like to visit Mount Rushmore but don’t feel like going to Japan 🇯🇵
@@kimarnill7648 isnt rushmore on the border between america and canada, with the presidents heads facing towards the usa
@@anonimous8743 You know more than me , I have no idea 🤷🏼♀️😁
I wish that he had asked me "Who fought in the Civil War?"
My responses:
1. Which Civil War? There have been many. There is one going on right now in Sudan. OR
2. The Cavaliers and the Roundheads (Crown and Parliament) in the Seventeenth Century.
the amount of states , some people think the Puerto rico and theres another one i cant remember (i am british) , so that could be seen as sort of understandable. i am trying to be charitable
I like the way the guy says they got the answer right, when it's clearly wrong. 😂
I’m English & I live in Australia & I can answer all these questions.
Now be fair, Amanda, they didn't have a calculator handy, to answer what's 3x3x3! Yikes! haha 🤣😅😂
They can vote !
I would describe myself as a deeply spiritual person, so I'm not really into knowledge. By "deeply spiritual" I mean "colossally fkn stupid".
But that's absolutely fine, because I'm so deeply spiritual.
What a load of pretentious twaddle he spouted.
I know we have our fair share of numpties here in Britain too, but that was shocking!
I am shocked, as a Brit, I knew all the answers to the first few questions! Did these kids actually attend school? Maybe this was just for the camera?
You’re a very intelligent American, you move to Britain
I could understand people, not knowing what a bakers dozen is, but I can’t understand them, not knowing what a dozen is most children should know that by the age of about 7
I agree lol
The recommendation was good, by the way
You can't even call them colleges anymore. They're not just diploma factories now.
That was funny, I would like to see a British 🇬🇧 version, most of us should have a basic knowledge of our country's but sometimes people get a "Brain fart" over the simplest of questions. Great video. 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇲
They walk amongst us in all countries.
Hi Amanda, I am English & it's clear you had a better education than most US citizens because your English diction is clearer than most including my US friends. Top marks. P.S. I love your tats. 😉
Off the cuff, I couldn't tell you how many counties we have in England, but l do know a dozen is 14.!
A baker's dozen is 13 the TV programme Hawaii Five-O
i can see you're shocked, and i feel your pain.
Don't be embarrassed, we don't blame you Amanda. It is painful though
1:48 "That guy acually had a cap and gown on"... no.. he didn't... he was just going to a costume party.... 🤣🤣
The American bubble 🤣🤣 lol
The Civil war was fought between the roundheads and the cavaliers.
Yeah... Nowadays school's main job is not to make you feel bad about yourself and not to help you achieve a standard set of knowledge and skills.
They asked a few if you travel at 60mph for an hour, how far will you have travelled. Not a clue any of them. They then asked detailed Kardashian questions, they knew every one.
you start to wonder what the hell they do in school...jeez....i bet they know all the middle names of all the Kardashians
I was laughing so hard at seeing Amanda just gape in shock at the responses. Pretty sure I saw the exact moment she gave up on humanity. :P
It's the same over here just watch the popular quiz shows with obvious answers
Amanda, don’t fret love you are by far a world of smartness away from those individuals. And lucky for you you’ve been saved here in Gods own country…
The video IS representative of my experiences:
I had to explain to a young US friend that each of their States has 2 Senators: 100 Senators, 50 States - seems obvious to me.
And these kids are going to run the country one day lol. I saw something similar a couple of weeks ago and they was harder questions and they did well
How are you finding the UK ... or more specifically England - our accents and culture ?
Amanda, I'm English 66 years old, I have travelled in America extensively. I have amazing American friends. Let me exaggerate, there are two types of Americans. There are Educated Americans, who probably have traveled the world a bit, then there is the rest of the Americans, who are OK to talk with but don't expect too much. Look, you live in the UK, Go to Glasgow on the street, but with questions referenced to Great Britain.
This can't be true can it 😂😂😂😂Amanda i bet its very similar here in the uk some kids think milk comes from the supermarket not cows and don't know what chips are made from😂😂
and chocolate milk comes from brown cows.
llol stop 😂😂
@@dogsmusicbookstravelscience Agreed - but in our defence I think the law of unintended consequences applies very much.
@@alanmusicman3385 True. Hindsight is such a wonderful thing!
Too right it’s worrying, these are potential parents - what chance do their children have? THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
"How many countries are there in South Africa". The answers are very interesting.
