    Hi Kelly. This method of kettlebell swings is as I was taught 20 years ago. Fantastic form. It is great to see the proper method, demonstrated. So many TH-cam vids demonstrating the common kettlebell swing is incorrect.

    Thank you so much for this video! Simply put, you are an outstanding teacher. Your clarity on the seemingly simplistic and fundamental aspects of properly swinging a kettlebell are exemplary. For those of us who are in need of lucidity on the foundational particulars, this broad-scope lesson couldn’t be more appropriate-and valuable. I learned more about proper kettlebell swing mechanics, and precisely where I was going wrong, from this video than anywhere else.

    I have found that not hinging AT ALL until my arms make contact has helped my swing the most. Starting the hinge before contact makes it a more back movement.

      why?

    • @marcingolab6227
      @marcingolab6227 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@Udodisgustme because the bell handle will catch on your ring; this can pinch the skin between them, resulting in a torn callus (preventing you from training for many days) or hurt your finger in many other ways. Now imagine you feel a sharp pain while swinging a kettlebell and you drop the bell, or bend over, or whatever; that can ruin your feet/back/floor/other people. There's also the fact that if you hurt your finger while wearing a ring, the flesh will swell and it may become necessary to cut the metal to take the ring off. As others have pointed out already, It's good practice to train (and do physical work) without metal jewellry on your fingers.

    Good technique and teaching points!
    Another common fault is using a KB that is _too light_ - the hips are powerful thrusters and it's not about _lifting_ the KB, but swinging it.

      Won't a heavy one make it very hard to hold on to when swinging?

    • @ant7936

      @johnsmith2136
      Not really. Your forearms and grip will improve as you progress.
      Start with a lighter weight e.g. 16 kgs for a man or 12 kgs for women (or a young teen starting out)
      Remember you're holding with _two_ hands. Later, you will use a single hand.

      Yeah, that was a first for me. A nice visual for me to keep in my head, the broad jump analogy. Very nice and helpful. Another from Leib Stark was "Don't do the 'Drinking Bird' head positioning when swinging." He was referring to those plastic toy birds that bob back and forth drinking water from a small cup. They've been around for decades. This is the position that Kelly warns about getting dizzy from.

    I teach my college athletes to NOT think of the KB swing as a deadlift. I teach them to push their butts way back, knee relaxed but not bent and reach back with their butts. I'm looking for max stretch in the hamstrings and glutes. I teach my athletes to think of the KB Swing as they do a Hang Power Clean. I tell them their body should be in the same position as it would be just before the start of the second pull in a Clean or Power Clean.

    • @tonybernard4444
      @tonybernard4444 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've found that my sciatica and back spasms were a function of hamstring/hip flexibility. I've been doing Jefferson Curls and deep Bulgarian split squats as part of a morning warmup routing for several years, and I haven't had any problems. I believe swings will work the hamstrings, but maybe not in a full stretch. I'm also careful about my back, so I make sure to stop the set while the work still feels good.

    • @steve-adams
      @steve-adams 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Like Tony, my sciatica was made much worse by poor flexibility and tightness around my sciatic nerves. Loosening myself up took me from being close to tears several nights per week to pain free for years. I’m 20 years older now and still doing well, but I remember that pain like it was yesterday. Keep the posterior chain strong, flexible, and relaxed, whatever it takes.

    When in a workout is it best to do these? And on what day?

    • @drewbob3030
      @drewbob3030 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since no one has yet to respond to your question, I figured I would.
      Working out the swing is best done after strength work in a workout. It can be used as an effective warm-up exercise as it hits most of the body and gets the heart rate up, provided it is not taken too far. A few sets of 10 or more reps with a moderate weight will do the trick for a warm-up. But, if you’re really working the swing for maximum benefit, it will have you sucking wind, deplete your energy reserves and may impede your strength training.
      As for what day, pretty much any day. This type of swing is primarily a hip and hamstring movement, but it isn't generally considered a strength exercise. If done properly you’ll feel a burn in your glutes. Some people advocate daily swings. Some every other day. Heavy swings can be a day’s workout. All depends on your goals.

      American swings go all the way overhead. You may see them in CrossFit vids. You may also see people nearly bonk themselves on the head doing them to the point of exhaustion.
      Russian version is safer. You can let go of the bell at any point and it will not land on you. It may bounced back into you, but it won;t land on you.
