I am loving your kettlebell workouts on the shred series! This was really helpful. I would also love to see a video on recovery, active recovery v. rest, etc.
If you do proper warm up before and cool down/stretching afterwards, very little recovery is needed. I've been doing proper kettlebell swings for 7 years. And I'm in my 60s
Kettle bell swings are a great workout. I've been doing them for a little over a year now. Form is really key here. Once you get the form down you will feel the difference within a few sessions.
Thank you so much for this video! Simply put, you are an outstanding teacher. Your clarity on the seemingly simplistic and fundamental aspects of properly swinging a kettlebell are exemplary. For those of us who are in need of lucidity on the foundational particulars, this broad-scope lesson couldn’t be more appropriate-and valuable. I learned more about proper kettlebell swing mechanics, and precisely where I was going wrong, from this video than anywhere else.
Good technique and teaching points! Another common fault is using a KB that is _too light_ - the hips are powerful thrusters and it's not about _lifting_ the KB, but swinging it.
@johnsmith2136 Not really. Your forearms and grip will improve as you progress. Start with a lighter weight e.g. 16 kgs for a man or 12 kgs for women (or a young teen starting out) Remember you're holding with _two_ hands. Later, you will use a single hand.
@@Udodisgustme because the bell handle will catch on your ring; this can pinch the skin between them, resulting in a torn callus (preventing you from training for many days) or hurt your finger in many other ways. Now imagine you feel a sharp pain while swinging a kettlebell and you drop the bell, or bend over, or whatever; that can ruin your feet/back/floor/other people. There's also the fact that if you hurt your finger while wearing a ring, the flesh will swell and it may become necessary to cut the metal to take the ring off. As others have pointed out already, It's good practice to train (and do physical work) without metal jewellry on your fingers.
Hi Kelly. This method of kettlebell swings is as I was taught 20 years ago. Fantastic form. It is great to see the proper method, demonstrated. So many TH-cam vids demonstrating the common kettlebell swing is incorrect.
Yeah, that was a first for me. A nice visual for me to keep in my head, the broad jump analogy. Very nice and helpful. Another from Leib Stark was "Don't do the 'Drinking Bird' head positioning when swinging." He was referring to those plastic toy birds that bob back and forth drinking water from a small cup. They've been around for decades. This is the position that Kelly warns about getting dizzy from.
Thank you Kelly. Your tutorials are fantastic. Please keep them coming 😀 Just an idea for a video in the future if your interested. A beginners guide to approaching a power lifting gym for the first time. What to look for and what questions to ask the coaches. Thanks heaps Rod.

Nice video mate, that was explained in great detail, thank you for the insights and technique tips. It's clear that you really know your stuff. Thank you.
Another 2 mistakes that make me wanna pull my hair out is when people make it too squatty or when they treat it as an arm/shoulder move. And their trainer is right in front of them while they’re doing it!!! Sad.

She's doing it wrong. And she knows nothing about what the swing does. It's supposed to develop the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings when done correctly
This is a great video, and excellent instruction HOWEVER, I will say - in my personal experience - consistently practicing heavy swings with 32kg+ bells will result in tree-trunk hammies.
Correct me if I’m wrong but when lifting up we should avoid locking our knees out and slamming our joints along with when we thrust forward we should squeeze thigh muscles abs and glutes when making the hip thrust and not just slamming the hip forward
Some of what you say is correct. All of what she says is wrong. Watch joe Daniels, Hannah Eden, Eric leijo, Pavel tsatsouline for proper instructions and execution

Well done! Excellent instructions. I’ll be honest. When it comes to working out, I skip over 99% of the female driven content. Maybe it was your gotch’a title , but I’m glad I clicked this. Anyone reading this, by all means keep searching for different exercises to do with Kettlebells, the more information you can acquire - the better. But I’ll say this, you will NOT find a better instructional video on how to perform the fundamental movement, than this one.💯💪
Women fitness creators are generally more direct and more scientific than the men. Half these men are on gear and vibing off junk science. Vet your sources whatever the gender, but don’t write off women.
Nice technique but it depends what your swinging for this is great for hips but if you are aiming for your core brace and try to control the downward movement . Of course you cant stop it but the more you try the more your core is worked
I teach my college athletes to NOT think of the KB swing as a deadlift. I teach them to push their butts way back, knee relaxed but not bent and reach back with their butts. I'm looking for max stretch in the hamstrings and glutes. I teach my athletes to think of the KB Swing as they do a Hang Power Clean. I tell them their body should be in the same position as it would be just before the start of the second pull in a Clean or Power Clean.
Sure there are, but I’m not sure how you can say that about the guy who literally introduced the system to the west. His form in those videos looks pretty good to me you must have skipped through the videos 🤔.
Sounds like you're using too heavy a bell. The swing is meant to develop the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. She"s giving bad advice and has poor execution
I have a lower back condition called Sciatica, though its been some years. I avoid heavy weights as axial loading on my spine can trigger it back. Will doing KB swings using lighter weights be of any use?
I've found that my sciatica and back spasms were a function of hamstring/hip flexibility. I've been doing Jefferson Curls and deep Bulgarian split squats as part of a morning warmup routing for several years, and I haven't had any problems. I believe swings will work the hamstrings, but maybe not in a full stretch. I'm also careful about my back, so I make sure to stop the set while the work still feels good.
Like Tony, my sciatica was made much worse by poor flexibility and tightness around my sciatic nerves. Loosening myself up took me from being close to tears several nights per week to pain free for years. I’m 20 years older now and still doing well, but I remember that pain like it was yesterday. Keep the posterior chain strong, flexible, and relaxed, whatever it takes.
As a senior, you should seek proper advice from qualified instructors. She's giving bad advice and has poor execution. You'll end up with serious injuries if you follow her. I'm a senior myself and have been kettlebelling properly for 7 years
Your shoulder hurts because she's giving bad instructions. The only thing that should be sore are your lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. The kettkebell swing develops these areas contrary to what she claims
"....mimics a broad jump" Nice, because I always try to keep it ballistic by pretending I'm about to jump, so I'm glad I'm on the right track. Sometimes I'll even almost leave the floor as I snap up.
@@morrisboris6877 So, first the "broad jump" was, according to you, "doing it wrong". Now the problem is she's plagiarizing Pavel, one of the undisputed OGs of KBs.
I don’t think so bc the joint/hinge you are pushing through are your hips not your knees. You will naturally straighten your leg because of the follow through but you don’t extend your knee to bring the kb forward.
Depends on what you mean by "locking". Proper form is to straighten your knees after the hip rheyat and have the entire body in a straight line. She''s giving bad instructions and has poor execution
Since no one has yet to respond to your question, I figured I would. Working out the swing is best done after strength work in a workout. It can be used as an effective warm-up exercise as it hits most of the body and gets the heart rate up, provided it is not taken too far. A few sets of 10 or more reps with a moderate weight will do the trick for a warm-up. But, if you’re really working the swing for maximum benefit, it will have you sucking wind, deplete your energy reserves and may impede your strength training. As for what day, pretty much any day. This type of swing is primarily a hip and hamstring movement, but it isn't generally considered a strength exercise. If done properly you’ll feel a burn in your glutes. Some people advocate daily swings. Some every other day. Heavy swings can be a day’s workout. All depends on your goals.
American swings go all the way overhead. You may see them in CrossFit vids. You may also see people nearly bonk themselves on the head doing them to the point of exhaustion. Russian version is safer. You can let go of the bell at any point and it will not land on you. It may bounced back into you, but it won;t land on you.
