Dear M. Zander I wrote you two another poem! This one is a collection of 14 of them (yup, I am not original, but everyone else copied Shakespeare too). I sent it to ya! I wish you well, brother. My prayers are with you. Frank.
reminds me of when i tried playing resident evil 2 for the first time at 14. i kept backing up into the fire for a 5 mins and then i shut it off to try something else. i beat metal gear solid 2 instead took 2 weeks.
I honestly don't get what's wrong or hard? Up is forward. Just press up to go forwards. It's basically impossible to not get it. Press up. Literally one button. Shooting should be the thing people have a hard time with, since it's 2 buttons and some aiming.
@@anjetto1 Tank controls are absolutely necessary for fixed camera games. It'd be so much worse to have the controls completely flip out on you every time the camera angle changes. I think when someone struggles with tank controls at first, it might actually be beneficial to have them change to the "normal" controls (if possible) and see how rough it is so they appreciate the consistency of the tank controls.
That was fun! I always appreciate that it's not Monty just watching his fiancée suffer, it's commentary on what the game does and doesn't do to introduce the game and series to a new player. It provides a unique glimpse into what makes a game stick for a person and what drives them away. Thanks Monty and Noobus!
This is such a brilliant video series. Examining a game through the eyes of someone who doesn’t “game” super frequently or is new to a series or genre. It’s fun, engaging, deeper than just a funny surface level, and you are both so entertaining and the production value is amazing as well. I spent today working my way through the entire playlist and it’s been great…can’t wait for the next one. Congrats to both of you on the engagement and thanks for some great content to accompany my day.
Those reactions to the OG RE cutscenes were correct. It's like how you can watch Dr. Giggles as a kid and have nightmares but you watch it now while drinking with friends and it's comedy gold.
Actually, the game does give you a heads up on Crimson Heads if you take the time to find & collect all the notes & papers left around all over the mansion. Some of the notes mention that zombies would revive with reddened skin, code named "Crimson Heads", and to prevent this, canisters of kerosene are left about to fill your flask, or even better, take advantage of the Grenade Ammo glitch to give yourself around 240 Incendiary Rounds, more than enough rounds to prevent any future Crimson Heads & deal with all the advanced enemies & bosses (only works on the US GameCube version though).
I grew up with tank controls, so for me it's easy and natural. My brain has a hard time understanding how anyone finds it difficult, just point where the characters head is. Always fun to see someone play these games for the first time though. The crimson head surprise never gets old haha!
I can't imagine how it is to be confused by the tank controls, it feels so obvious that for a moment there i thought they were faking it for the video. Maybe the first minute somebody not used to it can be confused "oh... it doesn't move like other games... let's see... ok, got it, it moves like this", I don't think the controls are that hard to understand.
It’s sometimes hard to forget how damn scary the game was in comparison to the sequels. The fixed camera was optimized against the gorgeously rendered detail of the mansion. You’re stuck in a horror movie, and you have to savor every resource found for your character to survive. It’s a simple premise as timeless as horror itself
I think we should all appreciate how cute and funny non-gamers are when first dealing with unfamiliar games. I've never played a single game with tank controls and it took me just about a minute before I was drifting around the mansion like I'm some kind of Mazda :DDD This is something I'll never experience again.
Watching her struggle with the tank controls but also being able to see exactly what she was trying to do was very entertaining, in the "oh I'd do the exact same thing" way. Great video as always!!
Another great video. I am sure I could watch the Noobus trying to understand tank controls over and over, and I will laugh every time. Quality content! Thanks for all the great work!

Tank controls get a bad rep but once you get use to them they can prove really confortable, specially with games with fixed or dinamic camera angles.
it's so crazy to me watching people struggle moving around with tank controls. When I first played these old games, which was RE2 at age 13, it took seconds to get used to the controls.

I always love your videos. Your channel, girlfriend reviews and boy meets girl has to be my favorite couples gaming together or introducing games to each other that i have ever saw on youtube so far, keep up the good work !!
My RE journey started with the original RE4, I never played the first RE in any of it's iterations but this makes me want to go back and give it a try! Love this series, can't wait for the next installment! :)
No better way than the modern ports of remake due to them including the option to use more standard controls instead of the traditional tank controls. The original setting is there but if you can't click with them, you have the modern controls as an alternate
I started with the port of Code Veronica on the 360, and quickly realized I was way in over my head in terms of the puzzles and especially the controls. I put the game down and didn’t touch it for almost 8 years.
I feel like the biggest hurdle is that RE1 establishes all your people as being in the foyer and then they aren't and it gives you the objective find wesker (which seems like a very mild first objective to do, since y'all were together in the foyer like 30 seconds ago). You don't end up finding him till the midsection which is so long that most people, without context or history, will think they've done something wrong or missed him which makes the puzzles that are actually progress feel like side content or at the very least wastes of time (since you've been explicitly tasked with finding someone who should logically be nearby).
This is a really really good point! Didn’t think about how the placement of the “find Wesker” bit. It’s just there for us to look around the hall but I guess the game hopes we get distracted by puzzles and stuff
Monty I think you have succeeded in creating my favourite TH-cam series of all time. It inspired my partner to start playing and I have almost convinced her to play from soft thanks to you and noobus humanis

The classic Resident Evils, although fantastic, can understandably be polarizing. Especially for people who are not used to more archaic game design elements. It's a shame that she didn't like the too much, but I think I can understand it. I remember that I just got board/frustrated while playing Resident Evil for the first time and I put the game down probably three times before beating it. I just remember that one day everything just clicked and I went from not enjoying it that much to playing it for seven hours straight and beating it.
i was so mad at your fiance for calling her Julie, but at the end i was there for Julie. it was the funniest resident evil approach ive ever witnessed. i often forget how unfamiliar this game can be to new players, i play remake at least once a year so to me playing it fells like just another day. Thats why it was soo good to see totally different approach at this
Never thought I'd be so early for a Monty video. I love your work my man, it's a literal crime you aren't at a million subscribers yet. Especially for this series, of course, but for all of your critiques, particularly of Hellblade and Control (neither of which I ever played, but the videos were fantastic) as well. Keep up this same level and you'll absolutely get there sooner rather than later, I'm sure of it.
Exactly! glad i'm not the only noticed that excellent dodge. Either that was pure luck or just wicked skill. Even i have to watch my distance disabling those Crimson heads, with shotgun blast from afar.
I'm guessing she missed the file in the safe room that warns you about the Crimson Heads and explains that you need to burn the zombies to stop it from happening, eh?
Genuinely cant understand people's issue with tank controls...press up to go forward. Thats it. No matter where the camera changes to up will move you forward. not difficult
I've never understood people who can't get the hang of the "tank controls" within a few minutes. I know literal 9yo girls who beat the OG trilogy on their own back in the 90s.
Some ppl just refuse to learn and expect everything to play the same. Plus he just threw her in blind and didn’t give her Info she would have been able to read in the manual on the GameCube release.
In regards to the camera angle thing, I really prefer the fixed cameras to the over the should. It gives the games a more cinematic feel, like the old horror movies where the scene keeps jumping because there were multiple cameras, it allows the game to put enemies just out of sight without needing them to constantly burst out of things, they are just behind the black. 2 and 3 work fine losing the angle as they are more focused on the chase, so having Mr.X/Nemesis jump out at you from random places plays to it.
Yup I remember rooms from the classic Resi games much more vividly than anything since re4 cos they were presented so iconically. The best the later games give is just a general vibe of the local (or in the case of re6, forgettable blandness)
Watching this and seeing someone encounter the game for the first time really brought me back to why I fell in love with it. My first RE was RE2, but nothing stuck with me quite like the RE1 Remake on Gamecube. I can't remember how old I was, I think 12 or 13. I got my mom to rent it for me from Blockbuster. I took it down to our unfinished basement and immediately began playing it on my little 19 inch CRT screen. The graphics absolutely blew my mind. In fact, I think the game is still beautiful. The scene where Kenneth gets his throat ripped out honest to God made me sick. I turned the game off. I even went and told my mom. She was horrified. But I ended up pressing on because I didn't want to give up. A switch inside me had flipped and I realized I had to conquer this game. It was a matter of honor. I'm sure I died plenty but I had eventually gotten to the point where I felt more comfortable running around the mansion. I'd found plenty of ammo. I'd made good progress with the puzzles. And I was slowly cleaning out the rooms for safety. I even made maps by taking pictures of the screen with our digital camera and then editing them in MS Paint, marking supplies and dead zombies and naming the rooms. I'd never committed to being so meticulous over a game and there was something very satisfying to be said of it. It felt more real, more intense. Eventually I ran into the same surprise she did - the crimson heads. I thought I was so clever for wiping out the zombies, only for them to come back in droves. I remember running from room to room trying to make it work, not wanting to admit defeat. There was even a moment where I scored a head shot on a crimson head with my very last handgun round. Alas I had to start over because my supplies ran out on me. I was so proud of myself for eventually saving Chris and Barry and getting the good ending. I've played every other main series entry except RE3 OG and I have to say that out of them all, this made the biggest impression on me and it is one of my absolute favorites, even being someone who does not gravitate towards horror games. You can cut this game's oppressive atmosphere with a knife and there is something to be said of the monumental pride you feel in yourself for overcoming what at first seemed impossible and letting out an intense sigh of relief as you watching your character fly off into the sunset in that chopper.
This is both entertaining but also a fun study of how first time people can feel while playing these games without the reason why they're like that. I remember as a kid playing a bunch of RE similar games and struggled to navigate around the map including the controls. Fast forward to 2016 I watched my friend's mother who's into old arcades and modern cinematic games, she was struggling to get used to the controls also the fixed camera perspective is very frustrating to her because she couldn't see her enemies and constantly worried what path is right to take and if her inventory n her skills were up for what's ahead. It does make me appreciate the standard of modern action games we get today like resident evil 4 and the many many many games that came after it. Controls and perspective is very important especially for casuals who don't want to struggle with bizzare gameplay choices.
Guaranteed the reason she had so many problems with the tank controls early on is because she was using the analog stick for movement, rather than the D-Pad. When the original Resi came out, Playstation didn't have analog sticks - so they were aping a control scheme from many old PC games (which had been exploring 3D longer than consoles had) which used tank controls due to the digital nature of keyboard inputs (mouse pointers were largely standardized by then, but most developers still hadn't figured out how to marry keyboard and mouse in combination for smooth movement). Digital inputs severely lack directional mobility if you're doing direct movement since you only have access to up/down/left/right - pressing down and left together will only give a 45 degree angle of movement between the two. Tank controls, however, allow you to arc the characters travel path even in motion. It provided much more accurate controls, with a full 360 degree range even while in motion. It makes it much easier to navigate environments and not get brought to a dead halt on geometry or pathing. Have her play an old Sierra adventure game like KQ4 and try to follow a very narrow path (that will kill you if you fall off) from a distant perspective (meaning you only have a few pixels of space) using only the keyboard number pad for movement.
Its honestly astounding that the game can go back to being scary after the iconic and absurd live action opening. I wish they would have kept those throughout the series.
I'm interested to know how she would have fared with tank controls had she the game manual. Those were a thing back then, but idk how many people used them. I rarely did.
Yeah, that's my big problem with when companies port older games to modern systems, they really should include a good digital manual with it (heck modern games should all have one in my opinion). I’ve seen so many lets plays of ppl struggling with pre-hd titles cos they expect a two-hour hand-holding tutorial when they’d have been fine if they had a manual to read.
Haven’t started this video yet (starting it now) but I already know this is gonna be good. What a unique way to take the Noobus humanus series. God I could watch her play and yell for hours, it’s also interesting as a contrast to your content without her lol
Ah, Resident Evil. This was my favorite game for years, it still holds up today. I rented this back when it came out and kept it for 3 months. The video store kept calling me to return it. I did return it but never went back due to the fees. I mastered this game and the “tank” controls. Even accomplished finishing the game using only the knife (Japanese players challenge)
Just being that guy...remake was originally on the gamecube and ported to the ps4 :) I love that you' guys are playing one of my favorite series, I think REmake is the best of the lot.
Man, it's insane how well that GameCube remake held up. I know this is then remastered version, but that's just a resolution change. Graphics are GameCube, baby~
I think they did touch up the character models a bit. But yeah the game holds up a tonne. Shame they didn’t have the original project files so had to upscale the backgrounds cos Re0 where they either had existing higher res venison or were able to re-render them in hd looks so crips
While I understand the need to avoid backseat gaming, I feel like there at least should have been an explanation of the original game's controls. A lot of these older games expect players to read the manual (not that many did, though *I* did). It could have saved a lot of the initial headache--still clunky but at least it would help wrap your head around them, especially if you explain it like driving a car.
Did she read any of the files you'd encounter along the way? Because there was one in a saveroom in which it was explained the ways a zombie can be completely killed and that if you don't do that they will come back alive as cromson heads. The files are your friend close to tutorial in RE.
This genuinely made me laugh, you sir have earned a subscriber, love the experiments and also with great games! Super refreshing, Shinji mikami games are always a work of Art I’m currently doing all of the games his ever been a part of it’s a long list
Once we learn that going into any room and tapping the aim button will point towards an enemy, you can do that also on long hallways. Its game breaking in the sense that lowers the tension.
Looking back at older games, especially at games with controls like this, I think we need to remember that a lot of these games didn't have tutorials... but they DID have manuals. Sure, lots of us may have completely ignored the manuals, but they were always there to provide guidance to players who wanted it. I think to make this at least a reasonable experience, the manual should be available.
Def agree and it pisses me off when publishers put games on modern systems and don’t include a digital manual since they were designed assuming you read the thing. You see so many ppl playing old games and getting annoyed cos the game isn’t stopping to tell you how to play cos they’ve been trained on 2-hour tutorial levels for every game in recent history and there's no indication the game had another source that wasn't included with the port so they just assume the game was always frustrating I remember in high school days getting a game and reading the manual on the bus ride home so I’d be ready to start as soon as I got indoors. Was magical.
Somehow I knew the moment I clicked on the video it will start with the missus screaming 🤣 Sometimes it's good to listen to my intuition I'm so glad to see her experiencing this, especially to see her cracking up at the opening because I always thought I was the only one finding it funny 😅
i dont understand why people dont understand the movement are related to the character and not the camera. but as a re fan i agree that some camera angle are realy bad.
I can't understand how the controls can be a problem. Maybe the first couple of tries "oh, it rotates, ok, got it", but it's not that difficult, I can't imagine how it is to not get the tank controls. I don't say this to be mean, I'm curious, the controls are so obvious, I can't imagine how it can be confusing.
What I like about this, is that through your fiance, we get to experience what it was like the first time we played it. My fave part was her getting completely healed, only to get tackled by the dog, lol!
Ok the tank control bit is killing me because this was my reaction picking up code Veronica after playing all the remakes. I just couldn't. Even my husband who played it as a kid (I didn't) tried thinking I was exaggerating and he was like "this is impossible" lol
Original re1 is just legendary and the dialogue is just beautifully awful and funny and has that special place in our history and noobus's reaction to everything from start to finish is still refreshingly funny watching this a second time 😂❤

16:37 the growling and thunder happening at the same time was perfect
I laughed so hard cause it reminded me of the first time I played it but the guy explaining was a fukn buzzkill , should've just let her play
Wait, people are actually THAT confused about tank control? You kidding, right?
This is brilliant! One of your best!
Love that you guys kept these going after you got through all the soulsbournes, please do RE 2 remake or 4 remake next!!
the intro immediately made me burst out in laughter. this is gonna be a good one
Excellent video! I love your videos! Absolutely hilarious! Lots of love to you guys! Your content is amazing and much needed! ❤️
Great watch! I've never played this game, so I also got anxious watching Noobus's journey haha
Just being that guy...remake was originally on the gamecube and ported to the ps4 :) I love that you' guys are playing one of my favorite series, I think REmake is the best of the lot.
I was just about to comment that I hate to be that guy but you took the bullet for me!
Man, it's insane how well that GameCube remake held up. I know this is then
remastered version, but that's just a resolution change.
My favourite past was her trying to pronounce all the patreon names in awkward silence.
00:40 PS4 Remaster of the 2002 Gamecube ReMake***
" gasp - NO! WON'T BE ABLE TO RUN" poor girl can't even walk in a straight line but atleast she knows her fate
The energy you both give is amazing, I laughed my ass off.
Curious to see how her perception of Resident Evil changes if she gets to play RE4.
Did she read any of the files you'd encounter along the way? Because there was one in a saveroom in which it was explained the ways a zombie can be completely killed and that if you don't do that they will come back alive as cromson heads. The files are your friend close to tutorial in RE.
Prety impressive ! This one was a very fun watch :D
Awesome start of the weekend! Don't let the zombs get to you! Also, keep the doggos safe.
Its refreshing to see another video of noobus humanus
Thirty seconds in and I already feel the Noobus *so hard*
This is gonna be a good one XD
You see so many ppl playing old games and getting annoyed cos the game isn’t stopping to tell you how to play cos they’ve been trained on 2-hour tutorial levels for every game in recent history and there's no indication the game had another source that wasn't included with the port so they just assume the game was always frustrating
I remember in high school days getting a game and reading the manual on the bus ride home so I’d be ready to start as soon as I got indoors. Was magical.
I figured out tank controls as a 10 year old
26:29 YOOOOOO LOOK AT THAT dogde, I swear I yelled that when I saw here dodge like a bloody pro!! *bows*
That was very cute, even the reading the names part. Watched all of it.
Somehow I knew the moment I clicked on the video it will start with the missus screaming 🤣 Sometimes it's good to listen to my intuition
I'm so glad to see her experiencing this, especially to see her cracking up at the opening because I always thought I was the only one finding it funny 😅
all that Julie Valentine and the Nubis needed was the beeping sound of a truck parking in backwards for the tank controls :D
I love this series! I can't wait to (hopefully) see the Noobus play more Resi. Maybe Bioshock? 👀
Oh this is a genius idea
PS4 remaster of the Gamecube remake* glad my feed showed me this video as now I have a new channel to binge lol.
I had the pleasure of paying through the remake with my wife last year and we had a blast. Little sad that she didn't really care for this one
Ah hell yes, this is gonna be a treat!
Edit: yup this has been great 😂 the 15 min mark kills me🤣
"Just need to go home and have a cup of tea shes a bit tired she's seen enough all her teammates are dead"
Peak Karl Pilkington vibes
i dont understand why people dont understand the movement are related to the character and not the camera.
but as a re fan i agree that some camera angle are realy bad.
First time i hear someone refer to a zombie as a "zom"
This is better than online streaming. Especially when your partner plays it.
Funny content that just showed up on my feed , subbed 😊
"He he, I'm so smart."
Freaking adorable.
😆 🤣 😂 the tank controls, I'm literally crying at this point. Which one was the zombie 😆 🤣 😂
What I like about this, is that through your fiance, we get to experience what it was like the first time we played it. My fave part was her getting completely healed, only to get tackled by the dog, lol!
I just realised it says "Fiance" instead of "girlfriend".
Congratulations.
Thank you!!
Ok the tank control bit is killing me because this was my reaction picking up code Veronica after playing all the remakes. I just couldn't. Even my husband who played it as a kid (I didn't) tried thinking I was exaggerating and he was like "this is impossible" lol
Original re1 is just legendary and the dialogue is just beautifully awful and funny and has that special place in our history and noobus's reaction to everything from start to finish is still refreshingly funny watching this a second time 😂❤
RE2 remake is the best introduction to the RE franchise, it was mine & I love RE so much now.
Love seeing a very close representation of how my spouse and I play games together lmao
