They're voiced by the remake characters tho. The cgi movies came out before the remakes did so they had to go with an og design for leon and claire. But for jill? It made sense to go with remake and she's also being voiced by remake jill too. The remakes are cannon now.

@@lordpean I don’t know that I buy that argument. Yes, the CGI movies came out prior to the game remakes, but the most recent releases use the remake voice actors for other characters in addition to Jill. I wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised if Jill’s design in this movie was *based* on remake Jill, but to have her look identical to her RE3-make model is a really strange decision, considering the passage of time in universe. It’s a jarring inconsistency.

Part of what made the characters feel so consistent prior to RE7 is that like their looks (for the most part), their voices were done in a way that smoothed nicely together. When I first watched Damnation, I couldn't tell that Paul Mercier and Sally Cahill had been replaced by Matt Mercer and Courtenay Taylor respectively. Even when it's fairly obvious like when Roger came on board, he still had that same vocal quality that Chris had in CV, the REmake, and Umbrella Chronicles. Now fast-forward to what they've done with the RE4 remake where you'd have no idea who Leon and Ada were by voice alone.

What's interesting is that they had the right idea with Chris in RE8: his facial features from re5 were still obviously prevalent, but they transitioned the face into the RE8 engine and made him older and I think it worked perfectly. I mean, the Leon/Ada thing I think is a bit more understandable. I mean think about it. On their first meeting, she told him she was an FBI agent looking to expose Umbrella. Was quite cagey until they got to the facility, and then he finds out from an Umbrella researcher that she’s a spy working for the highest bidder. She confirms it when she pulls a gun on him. Yes she hesitates, and yes she tells him to look after himself, but she still did all that before. Not to mention the trauma of the night in general on top of that.
She again proves duplicitous during the Las Plagas incident where she helps him out, still flirts with him and then steals a sample. We know it never makes it to Wesker, but he doesn’t know that. All he knows is that sample will end up on the black market. I know games are meant to be escapism, but I had to admit, when I thought about it, I kind of facepalmed at Leon’s attachment to someone who switches sides on a whim.

Also, if OG Jill would ever curses, that one Ripley quote won't be out of place for her character since it's not driven by urge to kill (okay, that may play a part too), but mainly by desire to *protect*.

@Raydhen And to add to what you say there Raydhen, when Ripley does finally say "you bitch" it's impactful because Ripley hasn't been dropping f bombs and other curses left and right. If she was saying that kind of stuff all the time, then when she does say that line, one would think "well that's just Ripley cursing out an enemy like she always does." But instead you can hear the intensity and the fact that she is fed up in dealing with the aliens as well as the fact that she won't tolerate the queen getting near Newt. When you do finally hear Ripley speak like that it stands out and makes you go "Whoa, she means business now". There need to be moments that are picked for those instances to have a bigger impact. Not just throw foul language all over the place, because then it becomes diluted and annoying.

All the female chars in the resident evil used to have more of a warm vibe to them, they kept it with Claire mostly in RE2 remake, Jill and Ada had it. Re6 was Peak Ada and I'm worried they'll erase all of her female James Bond persona in any DLC or future campaign missions. Jill is just a mystery but it also makes me wonder what they will do with Sherry Birkin as well.

    • @Polomance862
      @Polomance862 ปีที่แล้ว +34

In some ways, the warm vibe gives away that they are made by Japanese developers. It's known they give their female characters similar aspects. Whether in support or to the detriment of the characters.
Ada having warm eyes is a nice distraction to her real nature of this callous spy with unknown business connections. Hers is a ruse and to shed that in RE4 Remake makes sense to no longer be this warm person. Leon already knows her game, but has leftover unrequited feelings for her.
Jill originally was intended to be half Japanese before she was elected to be fully western. Her backstory was one of intense merit and work, being the first woman to overcome various military groups that got her into STARS. Once she actually engages the horrors of Umbrella and been betrayed; it's easy to see that she adopts a very callous personality and untrusting stance to people that isn't well known to her. I would prefer if she cared about others more, and didn't cuss like a sailor. But I do appreciate her hardened development.
Claire is the only character who I really want to retain the motherly / caretaker image. She went above and beyond to save a child from Raccoon City, and in many of the other appearances usually has her protecting someone else. She's a natural at it, and she ought to retain this higher empathy for other people. While also gaining confidence to overcome obstacles and get to the truth.

100% agreed. It's actually pretty out of character for Jill to not be in uniform. Watching Chris call Jill - literally - reckless and lecturing her was one of the most insulting things Capcom has ever done. Jill was supposed to have more emotional intelligence than all of the STARS since she was a bomb disposal, being calm and emotionally intelligent were pre-requisites of her job. Especially compared to Chris who used to be a insubordinate badboy in his youth. It was a major role reversal that make no sense at all.
Jill's trauma wasn't about not saving enough people, she always did it to the extent possible. But rather not having control over her own actions and hurting innocent people. Her behavior in the movie is just unjustified and an insulting attempt of capcom to welcome newcomer RE3 remake fans. Absolutely nothing more than that.
I go beyond that. Capcom seems to use the same ready-made tamplate for all female characters from REV2 onwards. Same one-sided tough woman thing. Just change the name and sometimes the outfit, just like the less talented western hollywood writers do. For these and other reasons, I always thought Japanese writers were more talented with women. But clearly something has changed in capcom's office.
Tha sadly part is to see fans desperate to defend the company new code of conduct just to ensure the next product's existence, even if it means their complete lack of conection with the previous one or dignity.

Good to see someone made a video on this. Leon honestly changed a lot too but it’s a lot more subtle because they stuck to his core flaw stronger, that being a naive rookie cop. What changed though is the character beats he goes through in his storyline and the development that comes therein. Original Leon insisted on helping cooperating with and protecting Ada, which broke through her steely spy nature and caused her to second guess her motives. This isn’t just enforced through dialogue but also actions and even gameplay like when you can examine Ada’s gun in the A scenario and find it has no bullets left - so she was bluffing when she tried to take the G sample from Leon. This informs us that Leon’s good nature won out on her in the end, and the only way she was going to get that sample was if Leon was a weaker man than she knew him to be.
By contrast remake Leon is a lot less noble. He means well and wants to do his best but he’s a lot more narrow minded and manipulated. He does help Ada but it’s a lot less impactful on the both of them, and his dedication to her is one driven by authority and vengeance because he buys into Ada’s lie about her being FBI wanting to crack down on Umbrella. As a result Leon in the remakes is just a much less noble minded and idealistic guy. He and his original self sort of represent two ways that someone with naive idealistic perspectives of justice can go: they either do their best to live up to the ideals despite the problems of reality, or they become disillusioned by them.

I miss the original Ada, especially the voice actress... I personally don't feel the current VA understood who the character was. And maybe as over the top as the original outfit was, it was a character statement. It didn't have to serve function, and that's what made it so Ada. The current costume design though... serves neither function nor character, because if you've ever worn a sweater dress (especially a short one like hers) you'd know that thing would not stay below your waist in action! There's a bit too much "overhaul" in their redesigns to modernize and invent something new but without actually improving it, in most cases. Claire's outfit also being an example. It's like they're thinking "what would every day people be wearing in a zombie apocalypse?" while forgetting these characters are not supposed to be every day people...

I was genuinely shocked when I saw the trailer for the new movie. The fact that it looks like they just ripped her model from RE3make and made absolutely no effort to make her look like she's aged, or reflect any of the changes she went through in the 20ish years since RE3 is honestly kind of ridiculous. I wish they had given her some scarring on her chest, where the device Wesker used to mind control her was, and maybe show her using hair dye to cover up her blonde hair. Maybe even make her clothing choices directly attempting to cover up her scar, just ANY visual reflection of the psychological trauma they are saying she's going though. Also personally, I am just not a fan of the direction or the portrayal of Jill in RE3make, it just feels like they took her and made her a generic independent character type. I'm sure the Voice Actress is fine, it really is just the script and the direction I had a problem with, she just seems so mean and pissed off for most of the game.

I could not agree more about some of the characters in these remakes. Jill especially. It's like the difference between Ripley from Aliens and Sarah Conner from Terminator. Both James Cameron action movies, both total badasses, but they are very different. Ripley is warm and kind to those she loves and hella distrustful to most other people, and for good reason. Sarah Conner, on the other hand, is all about the mission. She's a terrible mother and a total warrior, and after all her experiences, who can blame her? Both very well done characters, but totally different. That's how Jill is to me.
As far as RE4R, I agree as well, with the exception being Ashley. I don't mind changing a character if it's an overall net improvement, and she absolutely is. While Luis is technically in the same boat, it comes at a cost, that being Ada. Luis's presence being beefed up is great, until you realize he is just vampiring so much of her screen time and even a key scene or two. I would rather have Ada than Luis, personally, as I adored flirty Ada. New Ada is so dry that her attempts to flirt come off as genuine insults. Also doesn't help that she's been literally reduced to a non-entity in this version, but hopefully her campaign will fix that.
But Ada, Saddler, and Krauser have been done so damn dirty it makes me want to scream, and I absolutely do not understand the choices with them, it's outright baffling.
Also... I just miss Julia Voth. This new face for Jill is cute, but Julia Voth IS Jill. She has been since 2002, 20 freaking years. That's like replacing Luke Skywalkers face, and not to open THAT can of worms, but at least Disney tries to keep Luke's face consistent with Mark Hamil. Capcom has been so hit or miss lately, and the new fanboys just go crazy when you point out the chips in their perfect veneer. Or rant for way too long, like me.

This is a strange analogy, but I consider the remakes of RE2-4 like the remakes of Disney movies: the original is the "canon characterizion" that will always be referenced and marketed at the end of the day. When you go to the Disney theme parks to meet the characters, you expect to see the original cartoon version, not the live action remake one. The Jill (double timeline) situation is akin to effectively overwriting the original characterization and in a way alienating those who fell in love with that character. It's a weird situation when it comes to remakes and adapted media. It would be like if Nintendo started using the Mario movie Peach in their games instead of the same Peach they've been using for the past 20 years.

I still play Resident Evil 5, and I love that version of Jill more than any of the others. She's a strong, kind, caring, compassionate, feminine, warm woman whose very presence is calming. Also.... She was powerful and could kill you.
I haven't played the new games. But from what I've seen. New Jill is VERY westernized. Loud, mean, foul-mouthed, masculine, toxic, crude, no compassion or empathy, just an overall insufferable character.

My biggest gripe is Capcom's refusal to age their women protagonists. At least with remake Claire they have room to grow, but in general, Jill, Claire, and Rebecca don't look any older than their original appearances despite this movie taking place 20ish years later. They should all be in their 40s. Just let them age darnit. And don't give me that "their aging got affected when they were infected" bologna. At least Chris and Leon have slightly aged with time.

Lol that's the first thing that I noticed while watching Dead Island. Unlike the RE remakes, this movie is set in 2015, but all the women still look identical (age-wise) to how they looked in 1998 lol. Capcom are probably afraid some of the younger/immature fans would kick up a fuss about their "waifus" having a few wrinkles.
Other than that, I honestly don't have a problem with the updated versions of the characters, if Capcom want to replace old versions of characters with their updated counterparts in all RE media from now on, that's fine by me. But at least make it consistent. The decision to mix old Leon (Matt Mercer) with new Jill (Nicole Tompkins), makes absolutely no sense, other than 100% fan service. And even more baffling thing is that they used the new Leon (Nick Apostolides) in the last RE animation, Infinite Darkness. Why not bring him back, to have some consistency?

Original Jill always seemed thoughtful, cool and collected, even when scared. Color theory wise, she's akin to her character color, blue; wise, strong, bold, and beautiful like bodies of water.
She can become a bit stormy when she's angry, like at Barry when he betrayed her but she's not one for emotional outbursts or cursing someone out or throwing insults around unless you're as evil as Wesker.
RE5 is the only case where I see her have angry and intense facial expressions and that's because she's forced against her will to fight her BFF.
I think they want a 'spicy' character for the audience to experience, to get further immersed in the story,
and also since deep characterization is 'in' on the market.
Before, the focus was on gameplay and was player-centric so you got more quiet characters like OG Jill for the players to run around as. I also like it because then you can project your own ideas onto the character since we all come from different places, have different experiences, and will connect to characters in different ways. With talkative characters they basically show you, or tell you, how you're supposed to feel about a situation. In a sense it's speaks to the good effort of the developers for original games, but yeah, the inconsistency is a little jarring. There are good qualities to both variants of the characters mentioned. It would be amazing if they could just harmonize those qualities moving forward because of writing level, these already well loved characters would only be more awesome with PROPERLY added layers to their personality, but they flip flop so frequently because of the different mediums they present them to us through that it feels like a coin flip between giving fans some mental peace or absolutely shitting the bed the way they botched remaking 3. I want to say that we should be grateful we even get to see characters like Jill/Rebecca (hell even Barry) at all, but we caused QUITE a stir after what they did to Chris in 7, it's a much taller order but I think it's reasonable to push more consistency when it comes to these characters presentation; a man can dream.

Jills changes feel the most overt and glaring. Which has always felt weird to me because she's always been a fan favorite. They redo Leon and they keep him mostly intact, they spruce up Chris and Claire and they're different but you can still get their personalities and they stay distinct. The changes they made to Jill, though? It's a different vibe altogether, a full on retcon, I'd say. It makes me wonder what was happening behind closed doors that made them take such a drastic left turn with her. OG Jill will be missed.

For starters her personality is completely one-sided and centered around being a stereotypical, swearing badass, while old Jill was a badass but also smart, charming and caring. New Jill doesn't look or sound like old Jill at all, which I could excuse if her personality wasn't so messed up. It's like they turned Jill into a boulder-puncher, or Lara Croft, but even Lara Croft has quite a bit of charm and personality. I am so glad that other fans feel the same way.
I somehow kept running into fake fans who dismiss Capcom's mistakes. I remember I reserved RE3 Remake because it was my favorite of the classic games, and when it came out, it had a live action intro (for some reason) and completely cut the park and the clocktower as well as a few other locations. I was mad, but then people kept saying "No, it's a great game!" A great game does not mean a great or faithful remake.
And yes, these remakes can not replace the original games, as they're not the same characterizations or have the same amount of details. It honestly feels like Capcom's 10 year plan is to entirely rebooting the RE series, BUT, as you said, they're not acknowledging that they're rebooting. They switch back and forth in designs.
Why have remake Jill, but old Claire? Hulk Chris, but in RE 7 Chris was skinny again (and redesigned)? RE6 Leon (who has aged), but neither Rebecca nor Jill have aged even though this new movie takes place in 2020's, and the original games are set in the 90's. So Jill doesn't age anymore because of a mix of the G-Virus vaccine and Wesker's experiments? If so, say that!
It really feels like Capcom doesn't care about continuity anymore. They're streamlining the series with these reboots and cutting out any previous lore or characterization that gave the previous iteration an edge. All of this is leading up to an eventual reboot of RE6, and I think that may be their goal.

    • @neonnemesis3267
      @neonnemesis3267 ปีที่แล้ว +18

That's pretty normal at Capcom look at DMC5 Dante and Vergil aged like crap but Trish looks younger than ever, one can say it's because she a full demon and they are half demons (although as half demons they should age slower not as slow as her but still) but then you have Lady that also looks like aging stopped for her as well and she's full human.
Even if Jill stopped aging she should at the very least look like her Lost in Nightmares/ Revelations 1 self not her RE3 self. Also Dead Island will take place in 2015 not in the 2020s still doesn't excuse Jill looking like she's stuck in 98 clothes and all.
The problem is that the people in Capcom act like children going full on enthusiasm and zero on organization, one would expect that they have learned from RE1.5 an RE3.5 but the RE3R and RE4R situation with the team working on both and this shows that they clearly didn't. Just look at the Umbrella storyline they did a massive build it up to this final stand against Umbrella only for at the start of RE4 "stocks killed umbrella" now let's move to new idea that we had because we are sick of zombies (even if RE4 is one of the best games ever this is one of his weakest points) and no UC is not even a remotely decent ending to the Umbrella storyline.

Resident evil didn’t get popular by copying the modern American culture, it was popular because the Japanese wanted to write their interpretation of American culture into a zombie horror game. That’s what grabbed people in, especially Americans. The only problem was the many instances where Americans saw how silly and over the top it was, but it made sense when a foreigner is going off of mostly stereotypes they perceive to be cool when it’s about America. Which solidified its campy nature, but the problem was if Japanese wanted this to happen, or were actually looking for something serious.
Overall, when you simply just slap their remakes with only a full paint of American interpretation, it loses its charm, and just becomes your typical Netflix slop. Especially in the characterization department. I just wish corporations stop being cowards and establish new characters to overtake the new ones, but so many corporations are so incompetent as to how they should do it. Ethan failed, because instead of starting off in a more grounded and slow setting/story, he’s essentially some superhuman (that’s strangely faceless, which is another huge factor to his failure), and doesn’t stand out compared to the original cast. But you know who did? Piers Nivans. A character who was meant to replace Chris, and even though he was introduced into a terrible resident evil game, he would be quite accepted in RE lore as replacement for Chris.

Personally, I like to think of the Remakes as a separate timeline of sorts. Events may have played out more or less the same, but the effects those events had on the characters is clearly different. For example, Remake Leon was clearly more traumatized by the Racoon City incident compared to Original Leon. I think we can see a bit of this sort of change in Jill at the very beginning of 3 Remake. Her experience at The Mansion is something that she had a hard time dealing with. She still has nightmares about what she saw. She's downright paranoid in regards to Umbrella. She may be very different than Original Jill, but I think those differences are justified well in the storytelling. Granted, I haven't watched any of the CG movies, so maybe I don't know enough to know what I'm talking about.

What's even stranger is that they have New Jill and Claire (Nicole Tompkins and Stephanie Panisello) alongside Prime/Old Chris and Leon (Kevin Dorman and Matthew Mercer). Then again, considering how different-yet-familiar Nick Apostolides made his RE4 portrayal of Leon in comparison to his RE2 portrayal, I have faith that if they decide to keep the new voices for future games they'll be able to iron out the direction kinks and have them sound appropriate (I mean, ID Leon sounds more like RE2 Leon than RE4 Leon, though that did come out before the remake). It does kinda suck that they swapped Leon's Vendetta model for his Infinite Darkness one, and I'll miss Rebecca's Vendetta model as well. Also, I'm surprised that they didn't bring back Jeff Schine to voice older Chris, though since DI takes place in 2015 I guess that can be excused.

You slowly going from talking about remake Jill being death island being weird to a Dragon Ball power up monologue was hilarious

Impressed to see the amount of enthusiasm and effort put into this vid, as a '96 RE vet I salute you.
Regarding Jill's characterization, I know your vid is at least a tad tongue-in-cheek, but I think something to consider is that taking in the entirety of the franchise, Capcom's actual storytelling has never been much better than mediocre, and I am pretty firmly convinced that they don't care all that much about their actual characters beyond their marketability(I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they're confused by the amount of investment players have in their portrayals). The modern remakes are largely celebrated, and for good reason, but the writing in all of them reeks of pretensions of writers that are very convinced of how adept they are, profanity and such is thrown in willy nilly to tell everyone this is for ADULTS, dammit, we are GROWNUPS making this SERIOUS video game. If it was contributing to the stories being told in some way I wouldn't even notice it, but it stands out because of how amateurish it comes off to me.
Main point being that for better and worse these games have never had solid story and characters at their core, no matter how fond we are of them or their adventures. I don't expect the legacy characters to get consistent quality treatment unless Capcom lays another egg like RE6 and forces them to really rethink what they're doing with the series.

Yeah, you're right about Capcom just not caring (and understandably so), and about the remakes having a more grating 'edgy' tone compared to the cheesiness of the originals. Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever be able to capture the tone of the older games because the cultural zeitgeist - the audience and creators - have both moved on.
