@VaderxG Yeah it depends on how you would define casual. My mom never played any videogame in her life besides Tetris and Solitaire. I guess she would die 150x times. My grandmother wouldnt be able to create a character though.
She didn't wander into the catacombs thinking that was the proper path, encounter Havel prematurely, mess with the Black Knight in the Burg, or piss off any of the neutral NPCs. I've gotta say, she's pretty damn lucky to avoid a lot of those new player pitfalls.
I must have basically sprang them all in my first playthrough. Skeletons, catacomb respawning, Dark Knight, trying to fight Hellkite Drake early, trying to fight him later,Havel, the painted world, dark tomb of the giants, Frameratetown, surviving the fall in the pit of Sens Fortress. The only thing I avoided was not discovering Gwyndolin and not getting Dark Anor Londo.
@@capacity9672 I actually attacked the crestfallen warrior on my first playthrough. After repeatedly dying to the skeletons in the catacombs, I got pissed and thought that maybe I could kill the crestfallen warrior and get a better weapon from him. "How hard can it be?" I thought. Needless to say, he kicked my ass many times until I learned how to parry him.
"I deserved that" is definitely for a recurring phrase for moments where I've fucked up and I know it. "Understandable" is another one, for when I knowingly try something risky and it doesn't work out. Honorable mention to "oh get fucked" every time I die because Soulsborne dogs are bullshit
I almost never think that while playing these games, usually the reason I did is because of bad game design or unfair difficulty. I wish I could think like that though, it would make it much more enjoyable to play.

@@KiltLeo I mean, you have a point but if I was in these crazy situations I would jump if I needed to. Also I think a jump is just a gamey way of simulating our traversal. For instance, in a game like assassins creed, where movement is more effectively simulated (if exagerated), there is not really a "jump" in the same sense. More of a leap. Yet in games that do not effectively simulate our traversal capabilities, a jump is acceptable. In reality you would just climb, but since it is a game you should at least be able to jump. Generally.
i played dark souls totally blind, only knowing it's supposed to be hard, and i very quickly by myself started saying "i deserved that" in response to being punished by the game for doing something stupid.
@@MontyZander i cant understand streamers who get tilted in dark souls coz i see what im doing wrong in fights and i know its my fault and im always trying over and over again to fix my mistakes. for me, dark souls is a good game that helps me to stay calm and chill
@@remo-con lmao I had a similar experience. Every mistake is entirely on you and it’s hard to justify calling “bullshit” on the games part. I’ve raged like no other playing sports games or stuff like league of legends. But I had no such issues with dark souls
@@resiefan3258 Do you even hear yourself man? I sincerely hope you're trolling. Jumping is a ridiculously easy thing to add into a game. Press button, increase height, and boom, your character jumped. Also, understand what you're talking about here. Dark Souls was made in 2009. It's old. Plus, it's a running theme of the series. Giving a terrible jump puts limitations on what you can and can't do, which feeds into the linear narrative of the game. Plus, this is FromSoftware you're talking about, the company which made Sekiro. You cannot seriously argue that the lack of an ability to jump is not a design feature.

I almost expected her to unlock a secret where all the bosses make peace with you since she may be the first player ever not to attack the hollows in the undead asylum
My ex boyfriend did this to me, it took me a whole day to beat asylum demon 😂 but now I have my own copy of the game and completed the game multiple times, I’m now well and truly obsessed with dark souls!
@Im gonna be a tumor today what's the point? Someone is now into the souls games which is a good thing, more money for from soft, means better games. You are an idiot
@Im gonna be a tumor today dude, stfu. Seriously, you are annoying and a pain in the ass. She just saying she liked Dark Souls and you come with "cOngRaTs pRincEss" why? Why you need to be so fuckin awful?
When I was 17-18 years old. My boyfriend back then now ex "forced" me to play Dark Souls. I do play games myself but I had never played dark souls. He was very surprised that I didn't die a single time in my two hours of playing Dark Souls. Managed to get away from Asylum and played a little bit further to the Undead Burg. Just a couple of months ago all of the Souls games were in discount on ps store. I bought them all just to try them. It has been very frustrating and also very rewarding experience so far. Especially when I beat Ornstein and Smough. That gave me serious dopamine burst.
@@watchfulwanderer6443 Imprison them? Why? Lodran is just full of free undead lol, most of them went hollow and are harmless (see New Londo). The guard himself is useless cause nobody want to leave the prison. And the raven could have probably killed him and let the ppl free, but the raven want a chosen undead to leave the prison, not a random hollow.
@@nikolai347 First of all, hollows are demonstrably not harmless. A majority of hostile beings in the souls series are hollow. Second of all, the asylum is specifically there to keep undead imprisoned for eternity. Every sane undead wants to escape because the alternative is slowly turning into a hollow. And chosen undead just means someone strong to burn in the kiln, which means an undead strong enough to kill the asylum demon.
"The hardest Dark Souls is your first" I heard this from a friend who loves DS, I'm playing DS2 and it's very difficult, but I'm really enjoying the game, one thing that motivates me to continue is because since I started playing DS, I got better in most other games that I play, my reflexes, learning, attention, decision-making evolved quickly, there are other franchises that have this footprint of the first being the most difficult, for example Monster Hunter (Top 3 favorite franchises) , in Monster Hunter World and the Iceborne expansion I had an absurd difficulty, now playing the new and the old games I am having a walk in the park and look that the World is one of the easiest, I am looking forward to finish the DS2 and play the Remaster, 3, Demon Souls, Bloodborne and other difficult games like Cuphead, Dead Cells, Battletoads, Ghost and Goblins and Ninja Gaiden, this way I will improve my skills a lot
Right!? After watching her muscle through I had a proper itch to go back to it. DESPERATE for a PS5 just so I can play Demon's Souls because it's the only Soulsborne I haven't played yet!
dark souls does bring forth that darkness. Just think, there is the certainty that in everybody's bloodline some dark marauder, bloodthirsty murderer, warrior or brigand ancestor existed that raped and left for dead some farm girl or villager ancestor. Thus we all carry that piece of evil DNA in all of us.
14:28 "she tried again, this time focusing on her pyromancy to battle enemies from afar. It didnt work" the script, the footage, and the tone are all so wholesome it made my day
2:30 you absolutely can morph your character! I'm really surprised how many people miss that option. You just press 'x' (on the Playstation controller) to edit character, then you're given loads of sliders you can use to adjust your characters pretty much however you want.
It was so satisfying to watch someone struggle for once. I just picked up dark souls for a 2nd time 2 days ago and everything I watch has people breezing through it. Years ago I made it as far as the duel boss in New wherever but after dying about 100 times I quit. I am currently at qualag and slowly grinding through but it was nice to know someone else felt my pain.
It was so fun when I first started and eveything utterly destroyed me. The games are still fun but they’ll never capture the same magic since they’re relatively easy now with some speed bumps along the way. Something about slowly improving and getting better little by little is so much more fun than the end result of being able to decimate everything
@@plugshirt1762 by NG+ everything was easy and the game loses something because you know where to go and what is coming next. By NG++ I made it through the whole game only dying once (from Seath when you have to die) and dancing (gesturing) in the face of all the bosses. I even did the other serpent's story instead of Frampt (killing the 4 kings right after getting the lord vessel and not giving it to Frampt) and New Londo had always given me issues. Your first dark souls run is the only one that matters. That's why I keep advising people not to cheat (Soul Roll, infinite items etc) because you only get 1 first play through.
@@aaronalexander4928 the first playthrough is magical but I don’t feel I truly mastered it until around the time I was doing ds3 dlc as I was getting better up until that point in which I could beat even the hardest bosses with relative ease. It’s sad because even challenges like soul level one or similar don’t even make it much harder because it just prolongs the time it takes rather than requiring more skill
@@plugshirt1762 what it is, imo, is on your first play through you are so worried about dying. You don't know where the next bonfire is and you pretty much just creep around corners and try to stay alive. By the second play through, you know all your own moves, you know all enemy and boss moves and you know where everything is. I think you take that experience and confidence into later games. You already know the rules and you know what to do. At that point it is just about learning the new enemies and hoping to spend as little time as possible in whatever poison swamp they throw at you.
Hearing her cheer after beating the asylum demon makes me happy, its why souls games don't need an easy mode. I love that feeling of accomplishment after struggling for so long
I almost teared up from sheer joy of her excitement. It’s contagious when someone conquers a huge hurdle and finds their way amongst the league of all others who went through the same trials and persevered. Such a great feeling!
Lmao, yeah. Dark Souls can be like an abusive boyfriend/girlfriend in the beginning. Keeps giving you pain yet you keep coming back. She knew she didn't need it and was able to walk away. Truly brilliant.
Makes me less ashamed that despite being a long time and avid gamer, who even enjoys a good challenge, I've never 'got' Dark Souls. It's the clunkiness I can't get past. I've even played a handful of Dark Souls rip offs and enjoyed them (The Surge comes to mind but I know there are others), but to the detriment of my gamer cred, actual Souls just leaves me pissed and disappointed in myself.
Considering a good 90% of my deaths in the SoulsBorne games was due to me being a absolute moronic wanker... yes saying ‘I deserved that’ is a very common phrase for me.
“Upgrading your character from rags to riches” wow, that perfectly describes how I felt when I started to find those sick armors and weapons in the game.
The true test of one's relationship is making your lover play a souls-like. I actually found this video rather entertaining, seeing the difference in the mindset between someone who is new to the souls-like genre, and someone who's had a fair share of experience. I sometimes forget that the actual gameplay isn't the only hard part, especially for someone new to the genre of game
I had the exact same experience when I tried to introduce my partner to Dark souls. Asylum Demon jumps down, followed by panic, a shriek and somehow a straight dash for the door. I was baffled, I think I tried to kill the tutorial boss like 3 times before I saw that door when I first played Dark Souls lmao.
When I was a noobis in Dark Souls 1 it took me a couple hours to figure out the game enough to kill the Taurus Demon. I thought I had it all figured out. But then I spent so much time trying to kill the Capra demon. I would say it took about 15 hours in total for me to go from the start to downing the Capra Demon. I ended up leaving and exploring thinking that wasn’t the right way to go. Then came back no stronger than I left. Only to bang my head against the wall for hours on end and taking days off from the game in between out of frustration. When I finally got gud enough to kill the Capra Demon, I was immediately hooked. The learning curve at the start really prepares you for the learning curve you will experience when you get to Anor Londo.
I killed Havel first and assumed I was at the wrong place when the hydra blasted me in the face and was pleased the Taurus demon was so easy in comparison
My favorite was how her shield was up all the time, slowing stamina regen while she fled, but somehow it never came up during a fight when it would actually be useful 🤣 Bless her, though, she did great learning the systems and adapting. Reminds me of my first playthrough (and sometimes my current playthrough when I just have those "bad play days")
I love this video, cuz I talked my gf to play DS 3 and I had the same experience. She really surprised me with her skill, but she was just constantly screaming lmao
She did very well for someone who's so unused to video games. I hope she played more, maybe even finished it. I think she could if she put her mind to it.
“I deserved that” is a quarter of my deaths, like when I think it’s a good idea to run it o a corner that a group of ranged enemies cant hit me in, only to remember that there are 4 melee enemies that the stunlock me to death.
What is an average gamer though? an adult who only plays on Nintendo switch or a kid who only plays fortnite? neither are correct as a person could be addicted to one game and put in more hours than a super pony with all his/her exclusives 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ you iether play games or you don't I say
Rewatching this series. Honesty would love the cursing scott play anything. But the goal of 100 subs in the intro made me smile. Congrats on your growth.
please tell your girlfriend I care her? the absolute JOY of watching someone who is completely unenthused in a certain thing to actually GET IT and also ENJOY IT, even just by its small moments or passing some things? it's really good. I hope you both have many great playthroughs like this, with both of you inviting each other to try something new for one of you thanks for sharing :') (also, question: how did she like the noobus humanus joke?)
Haha, I legitimately think she wants to test her abilities against another Soulsborne so there might be more of her in the new year! And she found it funny! (She called me a lot worse during her playthrough - trust me)
i've followed this series and it even inspired me and my girlfriend to try the same thing, she's currently on dark souls 3. i love how in this video your goal was 1000 views and 100 subscribers and now your channel has blown up :) keep up the good work
The first time I played dark souls, I didn't even know there was a way at the left side during asylum demon fight. So, I fought that ugly demon fairy with my broken sword, almost killed it upto 5% health, but couldn't do it. I thought maybe that's why it's called a hard game.
11:16 Reminds me of when I played Fallout 4 and Borderlands 2 last year and found out you couldn't climb over ledges, walls, and cliffs when you jumped after getting used to being able to do that in Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, and even Cyberpunk.
she did better than me on my first time. I mean i got stuck on the first encounter with the tutorial boss and got stuck there for a good 20 minutes while raking more or less 10 deaths for trying to kill it without knowing what i was doing lmao.
😆 I just finished watching your lady play Dark souls 3 vid. I cheese smiled like an idiot through the whole thing. I'm an old souls veteran myself and watching her play reminded me of my 1st time playing. Thanks for that.
I could imagine her reaction to the Gaping Dragon. *Small head pops out* Her: It looks kinda cute... *Whole dragon appears* Her: EW!!! DA FUK IS DAT!!!
I keep hearing about this game, so I was curious. Although I've been playing games since the 1970s, my coordination has never been good, and I've never enjoyed fighting all that much, so this game probably isn't for me. It seems like I can get to a certain point with action games, but I hit a brick wall when it reaches the point that my brain cannot control my hands quickly or precisely enough and I cannot get any better no matter how hard I try. And I wasted many quarters in the arcades in the 1980s trying. Been there - done that, and I'm done. Although the setting and story make this look like the sort of game I would enjoy, it also looks like an exercise in frustration. For the sake of my mental health, I'll leave this game to others. I would never have the patience for this that the player here had (and I have doubts that I could ever make it as far even if I had the patience) - congratulations to her. If I play a game involving fighting, it either needs to be easy (like Skyrim), or turn-based (like the early 1980s RPGs I loved back in the day). Dark Souls clearly is neither. I must admit that I wish it had an easy mode so that it might be accessible to me (and I fully realize that die-hard fans will hate me for saying this).
I won't hate you for wanting an easy mode. I don't think the games should have one honestly, it is part of the experience. But I can understand why someone would want one.
Your mode is the build you use and whether you summon allies when fighting bosses. Sorcery and bows allow you to remain at a safe distance and sometimes shoot your enemies from a point they can't even get to (cheese). Allies are often good enough that you can just kick back and relax (well, you still have to dodge when the boss notices you). And grinding a few extra levels makes any build more viable. And on the other side of the spectrum there are challenges - from normal ones like melee only, to no death no bonfires no souls no attacking ones. And also there was a madman who changed every enemy in the game to final boss and that was hell (All Gwyn Run, definitely search it). Difficulty in this game is what you make it.
Believe it or not, as a reflex-challenged 55 year old grandfather, these type games can be mastered through strategy rather than quick twitch gameplay. You are shortchanging yourself by not playing these games. Just do what I do and play offline to avoid the PVP invasions -when live players (teenagers) join your game to destroy you. Conquering a tough section or boss is quite thrilling and very rewarding.
@@DarylCook63 I will never play a multiplayer online game - what you describe sounds like a frustrating waste of time to me. I am an antisocial gamer - other people don't belong in my games. Yes, I have noticed that careful strategy can sometimes mitigate the problems of difficult fast-paced combat, and that could be an option if I really wanted to play this game. I'm in my 50s as well, and I only have so much time to play games, so it is also a matter of priorities. I've never particularly enjoyed combat in games even when it is easy or turn-based, but when I enjoy other aspects of a game, I'll sometimes put up with the combat as long as it isn't too tedious or frustrating (or if I can cheat past it when I get sick of it, as I've been doing in Valheim). I guess I don't feel all that much satisfaction after getting past a tough and frustrating fight - I just find myself wishing that the game hadn't wasted my time, and I think that maybe I should be playing a different game. These days, building/simulation games and walking simulators or other combat-free narrative adventure games are better uses of my limited time. What I would really like is a fantasy RPG that has no combat whatsoever; removing combat would force a focus on narrative, exploration, and putting RPG mechanics to new and innovative uses. Something like that probably wouldn't sell, unfortunately. I still don't think I'll try Dark Souls, but maybe one day, I'll decide to find out if careful strategy can make up for my poor reflexes - after I have retired and have more time. At that point, Dark Souls will be ancient history, but I play old games, so that won't stop me.
Wow, absolutely outstanding video! I loved it! Thank you for sharing this and huge props to your girlfriend for putting herself through this, haha. She took it like a champ, I couldn't do it myself!
I just want to say that I found your channel a few days ago and you're quickly becoming one of my favorites. I like that on these videos with Noobus you analize the level design and for me, it's one of the best bits. Be sure that I will become a patreon when I can!
"Dark Souls -- Pacifist Run" That is priceless. As a mom of 2 who somehow got roped into playing the DS franchise myself, I say with zero weirdness: I love your girlfriend. She is awesome.
The only time darksouls was as hard as the memes made it out to be was going to the catacombs for the first time and your fight with orn and smo for the first time

Her choice to grind, level up and buy new armor and weapons was very smart and not too many players take advantage of the mail armor. It was great for a first time playing Dark Souls.
10:00 ahhh the joy of beating ur first dark souls boss... as well as the joy i felt after beating soul of cinder... and smelter demon for the first time... and a lot of other bosses frankly.
That was really impressive for a casualish gamer. I played ds1 for the first time in late 2017 and was stuck at the asylum demon for like 45 minutes trying to kill it with a broken sword before I found that door at the back lol.
Man I loved this. Was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Great narration, great victory story. Brings me back to my first time through and the joy of struggle. As a Souls Veteran with multiple platinum trophies in the franchise (#HumbleBrag,) it's not a feeling I get to revisit often, but one wrapped in a lot of nostalgia. It felt good to relive some of that struggle through someone else!
I used to speedrun this game so if a partner did this to me I would play dumb and pretend I'd never played it before, only to beat the bosses first try lol I think that it would also be nice to see the look on their face as I'm doing it, seeing that joy. might bring some of the magic of playing the game back for me
Grats for her. My wife doesn't get why we try to avoid death in Valheim, I tried to explain it, but she plays a mmo where death just means rez circle, not a 5% skill loss.
I’ve been gaming for years but can’t take the frustration that accompanies DS games, I get collectors anxiety so dying, losing my souls and dying again before getting them back was creasing me, then I couldn’t get the kick mechanic to consistently work so the shield enemies were like banging my head against a (definitely not illusory) brick wall, I tried repeatedly then finally rage quit and never went back…! I’m therefore in awe, extremely well done that woman!
My only video game experience is legend of Zelda games and Mario kart. My boyfriend is getting me to play dark souls this week. If I can do half as well as Noobus I'll be THRILLED.
damn. I played a LOT of games before ds1 (mostly on "easy") but I died much more times, and didnt learn, that I must jump on taurus from tower. I used google for read this.
I’ve played dark souls for three years now, and I bought the game for my friends birthday. It was hilarious watching him play the game for the first time. For me the game is really easy. But, for newer players, even people that play other games a lot, the game is really hard.
Yes indeed, but it really depends on which kind of game you're used too. And probably your generation, old games and arcade games were pretty hard, things such as Tekken won't let you get the ending too easily!
@@nikolai347 I grew up on nes/snes/megadrive games, later it was PC exclusively, and I was always pretty good at fighting games, so they were never a problem for me. Even character action games were easy, I remember smashing through the DMC3 back in the day with ease. However, my first time with DS was train wreck. I had tragic learning curve with it...something doesn't carry from the other games to DS. Now I'm fine with it, after years with the franchise. SL1 and other challenge runs, but there is something magical about your first playthrough.

-Sekiro has entered the chat
How often does one jump in irl?
@@KiltLeo I mean, you have a point but if I was in these crazy situations I would jump if I needed to. Also I think a jump is just a gamey way of simulating our traversal. For instance, in a game like assassins creed, where movement is more effectively simulated (if exagerated), there is not really a "jump" in the same sense. More of a leap. Yet in games that do not effectively simulate our traversal capabilities, a jump is acceptable. In reality you would just climb, but since it is a game you should at least be able to jump. Generally.

@@plugshirt1762 what it is, imo, is on your first play through you are so worried about dying.
I had the exact same experience when I tried to introduce my partner to Dark souls. Asylum Demon jumps down, followed by panic, a shriek and somehow a straight dash for the door.

For a good playthrough of Dark Souls 2, I reccomend “Best Friends Play Dark Souls 2”
Pretty funny stuff.

I think I didn't think I did much better in this part of the game, even after having completed Demon's Souls before.
Everything fromsoftware puts out is so visually pleasing for some reason, like from the blood spatters to the brick textures, everything is super captivating
