You guys are all crazy debating about where, exactly, Malay culture and history came from. As Matsalay who loves visiting MY and who is married to a Nonya girl, what I love most about MY is its incredibly rich diversity and history, including the relatively recent history that included mixing in Chinese, Dutch, Portugues, and British with existing Bumi culture (however that originated). Malaysia today is vibrant and unique, and its ultimate strength lies in its diversity. I absolutely LOVE being able to eat in a MY food court and hear Malay, Tamil, Hakka, Hokkien, Cantonese, and English being spoken all around me. Only in MY can that happen! Be proud, people.
As a origin people of kedah, Maybe it's possible for me to straighten out the facts about the power of the kedah sultanate . First of all, I would like to clarify that the Sultanate is still in power as the state kingdom to this day. The fact is that the institution of the sultanate still remains in power through the heirs of the same lineage from 1136 to this day. Your fact about the sultanate of kedah was stalled in 1909 is completely untrue.
I tend not to believe picture graphics circulated today about Melaka. Remember Tom Pires said, whoever the lord of Melaka, has his hand in the throat of Venice. The Portuguese and Dutch described Melaka as Venice of the East. How can they look like fishermen village? How is that possible. I believe somehow, the true Melaka is hidden somewhere in their library or archive or museum.
I bet the walls of Malacca are made of stone and not wooden palisades, because the Portuguese could only breach the city's defenses ONLY when there are traitors who opened the gates for them, and at that time, they have long-ranged cannons placed on their caravels!
The palace now we see in malacca is only a replica of the much much bigger palace ornated in golds & solid teak. From Srivijaya to Malacca & until today the malay kings have their thrones. Surviving 4-5 european powers invasions including the japanese in world war 2. The malay aristocratics are very skilled in building trades & diplomatics relationship
@@randalljackson4824 most destroyed by portugese, and dutch..A farmosa was build from the grave stone, and palace of the said Sultanate...pretty sad. They literally destroy anything that related to the past ruler.
I don't believe that the sultan converted due to monetary reasons. if that were the case, the Malays would have converted to christianity after the Portuguese conquered Melaka...it would be economically beneficial that way wouldn't it? Is it too hard to believe that the sultan converted to Islam after witnessing the well mannered and piety of the Islamic traders? Keep in mind at this time it was the golden age of Islam in the Ottoman empire and Europe had just wrapped up the Spanish inquisition where Muslims and Jews were burnt alive for not denouncing their religion. Neither the Muslim Arabs nor Zheng He who was a muslim, seek to conquer Melaka like the Europeans did. Just my thoughts
@Anand Kumar Nah I don't believe so. I'm no history expert but I know that the Zheng He fleet was a diplomatic fleet and not a missionary fleet. Plus not all in the fleet were chinese muslims. How do I know? Some of the crew from the fleet stayed and married local women. These people are called the Straits chinese and they are traditionally non-muslims. So, it can't be that the chinese admiral that brought Islam to the Malay lands. Plus , if Islam was brought by Zheng He, there should be chinese style mosques as the standard in Malaysia. But the standard design of a mosque in Malaysia (and many parts of the archipelago) have Arabic influence. And to top it off, almost 30-40% of the Malay vocab has it's origins from Arabic, while none (that I know of) came from chinese. It shows that the arabs and the Malays had a long lasting close relationship which is shown in the culture. So, that's my opinion as a logically thinking non-expert.
@Anand Kumar Of course it is a possibility, but still, it doesn't mean that he accepted Islam from Zheng He. Besides the Chinese Dynasty was not Muslim at the time, so they won't get any favors from China by converting to Islam. But on the other hand, the Ottoman Empire was Muslim and had a lot of fire arms technology that ended up in Acheh and Malaya region due to their relationship with the Sultanate of Malacca. Of course like I said, I'm not a history expert, so I can't say you're wrong. But I tend to go with the Arab traders theory because there is more weight to it, plus it's the mainstream view. The Zheng He theory is too far fetched.
Sad that the British destroyed the fort for fear of it being used by rival French expansion. It would be an incredible site as opposed to the few ruins that remain. I was fortunate enough to be in Melacca during the San Pedro festival. 500 years later you can still hear some Portuguese spoken among the decedents of those early colonizers.
