just purchased a guitar after not playing for 32 years because I quit smoking and I always wanted to have a guitar again so I treated myself 🙂. Now I found this channel and I'm blown away how easy it looks when you play, so I purchased for a premium membership at your site. Thank you for motivating me being very nice and calm. Greetings from Germany.
These lessons are hands down the reason I am playing blues for myself and enjoying it. if you really want to invest the time to learn and play, these guys will get you from A to B in the fastest way.
WOW! What a great lesson! I took a year of frickin guitar lessons trying to learn blues lead and my "teacher" let me run up and down the A pentatonic for a year trying to "find my own voice". I kept telling that knucklehead I don't have a voice so just teach me someone else's voice but no, just kept noodling around sounding like an idiot. I learned more in this video than I did in a year! Awesome job!!!
Fabulous lesson! Your “buffet excess” example is perfect, and your small but elegant solo is the perfect starting point for those of us struggling to get past that point in our playing. Please continue explaining all the many small licks that you throw in between chords, as they are the mortar that holds your elegant playing together.
Wow! Mind is BLOWN! stumbled across this lesson looking for something else. Ditched that idea and just soaked in what you're showing. My key take away is...getting my mind and fingers to "sing" the solo and phrasing instead of trying to hammer through some notes trying to MAKE a solo. short singing phrases! wow! THANK YOU!
Your comments are "spot on" Brian regarding focus. I wish I had great teachers like you when I bought my first guitar over thirty years ago. Back then it was private tuition and books but the learning process was slow and frustrating. The Internet has changed all that for the better.
Been watching a bunch of your videos over the last few days and want to say, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!! I think I've learned more than several previous years of stumbling along and now have had several confusing things explained better than ever before . You are an awesome teacher ! Thank you . I'm 66years old and started taking guitar lessons when I was 8 years old and I've never felt like I really could play until I came across your videos a few days ago . I'm hooked again , feeling like I'm finally truly understanding the guitar in terms of MAKING music instead of just regurgitating it . Thank you !!!!!!
Great video! Great teacher! Makes perfect sense without a long winded diatribe like most of the other teachers on the internet! Thank You for taking the time to make this video!
I love the thinking behind this lesson. It is so easy to get overloaded with information as a beginner. It's so easy to do loads of things but not take the time to really learn them well so they stay with you. So often you learn something, forget it, go back to it, forget it and so you get stuck in this vicious circle. Repetition is the key. You've got to enjoy the repetition or learn to enjoy the repetition.
This is just superb, I've been looking for "learn blues guitar licks" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Wanichael Corylexander Equalizer - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my colleague got great success with it.
I’ve been playing guitar for over 57 years! I am 67 years old. I’ve always played by ear and never ever ever taken a lesson. I just recently started taking lessons from a local teacher. I find myself being more frustrated in between lessons then I want to be but… I realize this is part of the path. You’re struck such a note with me with your message at the beginning of this about the Buffay and seeing shiny stars but never feeling satisfied as If you’ve eaten a complete meal! Walking maybe crawling, is necessary. You’ve given the permission, and I now feel great just playing in my little box knowing I will evolve! Than you!
Idk what kind of snobs would leave 414 thumbs down but Man I’m glad I found this video! You are awesome. I just learned these notes in this bb king box earlier today but the other guys video didn’t have phrasing explained like you do on how many different ways to use those four beautiful little notes. It feels so good to here myself play with feel as a beginner. Thanks so much!! The way you teach has convinced me to sign up for your premium lessons. That says a lot bc I’ve watched endless videos where guys just didn’t have what I was looking for to validate joining their premium lessons. You break it down so easy man thanks again!! I love the blues!! Exactly what I’ve been looking for bc I was getting very frustrated and overwhelmed and losing interest.
Sir - what a FANTASTIC LEASON - I jumped years ahead from this - FINALLY - a clear coherent and focused lesson. Extremely well taught and broken down - THANK YOU!!!!
Really one of the best guitar teacher on the web, very clear, easy to understand, and inspiring, i could play pentatonic scales with my eyes closed, but didn't know what to do with them, now i can enjoy playing guitar and come up with beautiful phrases thanks to this lesson. Thank you man!
Brian, I just found this one (I'm a member) I've been all over the World (Internet) trying to learn and can say you provide the best tools and instruction. Thank you, this is a gem.
Brian is so creative, but more importantly, he's the best teacher on the web. He shows us how easy things are, so many things, and they're not just easy for him! He shows us how easy it is for us to play well!
Awesome teaching ! No words to thank you !!! I had learnt all the scales but they always seemed to be scales without sounding melodic.I searched a lot on TH-cam but couldn't find a way to make them melodic and you made it seem so easy and simple.I had even asked my guitar subscribed tutorial guitarists about posting a tutorial on how to make scales seem melodic and today I'm so,so lucky to have found your tutorial on it. This is why ,I do not have enough words to thank you for this wonderful tutorial . Thanks once again ! :-) :-)
In my retirement days, I envisioned I'd give some guitar tutorial on-line. But you can't do it any better than guys like Brian here. Not just a great player. A great teacher.
Brian you do a great job of being precise on the concept of playing the guitar properly with a bit of style. Your a amazing Guitarist however unlike most on you tube. You understand there a millions of us who will never be. So you explain to us in a basic easy to understand way how to better ourselves. Keep up the solid work.
I have been playing off and on for over 30 years but never was able to wrap my head around phrasing until I saw this video. This short video has inspired me to pick up my guitar again and play something meaningful and new. Thank you!!
You're absolutely right about information overload and the resulting fact that it leads more to confusion rather than any meaningful understanding. I have decided therefore that I'm sticking to your courses and resisting the temptation and habit of jumping about all over the place. I'm already seeing results and I've only been at it 2 weeks. I've learned more and consolidated my understanding more in those two weeks that I have in ages. Thanks, Brian.
Soul can most definitely be learned...a year ago I couldn't even play barre chords now I can express myself through the guitar to an extent and I love it
I am Teaching a Chinese chap' He Tout himself to Bar' in just ''Months' (before he met me) Though it took me Over a Year of playing, before Begin Baring, Point is, He was Using Too Much 'Brute force' and getting 'hand Cramp, I am aiming at teaching him a 'Lighter Touch, Looser feel, He is learning fast' I will Show Him This' Thanks to All of you's out there.
you the man !!! You made a damn good point when you have mentioned that there's so much info about guitar lesson on the net. I have thumb through more than a hand full. Since I meet you on line its only been a few days and WoW my understanding and playing now had brought my confidence way up and having fun. Thank You !!!
This is great! I just showed a 10 year old girl how to slide into notes and use this triangle, 3 to 5 and then 7 to 9 on the G. In two minutes she owned the fretboard. Thanks for taking time to do these lessons.
That is THE most insightful lessons I have ever had. Watched it with pen and paper at hand. Perfect blues sounds in less than 20mins. You are so right about the "shiny thing" syndrome lol! I laugh because it was me. Thank you.
I have to say I have used those notes for years while playing blues ( and other stuff!) in a band in the UK and now France......but not like that! I gave it a go and it fits all through the song! Thank you for an amazing tip showing you are never too old to learn!
Maybe the best single lesson on phrasing on the entire internet. Thanks! I'd heard that the major pentatonic scale works best over the one chord, and the four and five chords sound best over the minor. But I think you have lots of options once you start noodling around. Good stuff.
Brian, Another excellent lesson. You are right, for the most part, i'm lost out there going from one thing to the next trying to learn. You make it very easy to understand and learn. I'm all in . jeff
He's the best teacher ice seen yet, I'm just starting out and even though I have a God given soul swag and the natural ability to pick up music by just hearing it this guy makes it all make sense and now my creative abilities are going to jump up 100% because he makes it clear. Awesome video!
Thanks, this helped very much. I listened to Albert 3 months in a row for hours a day a few years back because it fascinated me so much. This video is a good example of phrasing technique with an Albert shadow at a minimum. Simple, the notes you don't play are just as important as the ones you do because your mind is still hearing the other notes in the absent chord of the progression during the response phrase.
Yes! I’m so tired of the clips of guys just thrashing blues licks. No phrasing, just flash. It’s nonsense. The blues should tell a story. You are a great teacher.
man couldn't agree more. Love Joe B and his "show" don't get me wrong, but Joe B for example will give you 43 notes in a "run" for the show, but this guy just talked us through 6 notes and it felt like it had SO much more soul. Less is more!
Nice, this was a great blast from the past. It isn't the usual angle to the maj/min approach. I have always enjoyed the BB (box) simplicity. Well done........ I forgot to mention - it is rare to find someone who actually shows you how to "count" your way into a blues line.
This Lesson is one of my go to lessons when I need a confidence boost in my limited abilities. A little goes a long way! He's giving my guitar singing lessons. :)
Thats true about the jumping around from one thing to another and hence not learning too much, i tend to do this alot and this is a good lesson to try to overcome that.
I was checking this out last night, and was able to get some beautiful blues licks out of it, also found out that if you slide the middle finger to 10th and 9th position on the G string it sounds very bluesy and really nice.
Thankyou. I was told I had "a sound" that was different from my friends I roadied for in the band in the day. So I was Jimmy Hendrix in my young, never had a lesson mind. I 'm glad to finally get the BASICS. I've always enjoyed playing, but I was embarrassed because I knew that I really didn't know what I was doing. Faker lol. I was close though and it was good fun. With your help, I'll be getting much better very quickly. Thanks again..G
LOVE IT man!. EXACT as PERFECT!. i mostly used Am pentatonic scale or A-blues scale. but after hearing this lesson, i learned!. use the MAJOR PENTATONIC!.
First time visitor and to guitar (my son plays well) - feeling inspired with this simplification, like when I first learned design at college, start with one typeface and two or three colors that work together, keep it simple, get some confidence in producing a coherent result. If you go for the whole thing at once it's easy to be overwhelmed. Learn to walk first. Baby steps are fine. So your teaching approach resonates with what I know and understand. Subscribed and if I can get some momentum I will look at your premium content. Thanks from Guernsey (near France).
This was great, I've been looking for "blues guitar lesson" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Wanichael Corylexander Equalizer - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my co-worker got great results with it.
Hey Brian, I'm a 65yo beginner (picked up a guitar about 2 months ago) with arthritis and carpal tunnel in my left hand and thumb. I can not yet do barre chords so, I appreciate being able to play blues with as few barre chords as possible. Thanks for your lessons!!!!
Blues is my favorite genre. This was a great lesson!! I don't want to take anything away from that but it would be really really helpful for those of us that are not at a pro level, if you could add a tab that you play over at the end. I took notes by pausing and drawing out a fret board but I doubt if it does your lesson justice. In any event, thanks for the lesson.
Forgive me for spamming you, but the video I just posted finally came together after I watched your lesson. I improvised for 8+ minutes, and it didn't suck. It's not great, but it's a lot better than where I came from. You helped me figure out how to let it breathe, and say something. I appreciate the lesson.
Fantastic lesson. Covering many aspects of guitar work and made me focus better on the songs I like to put together. I can hear Clapton in those licks as well. Thanks a mil.
Honestly. After getting the basics of penta scales in all damned position, maj, minor, blues etc this is the most useful lesson about actual phrasing... thanks ! (P.S. even if I also love Albert K. this was pure BB ;-)
Brian, of all your lessons, I think I love this one the most. I’ve often stressed myself out with feeling that I had to be fast. Just goes to prove that faster isn’t better. Also, had a thought ... currently this is standard 12 bar blues. A-D-A, D-A, E-D-A, D-A-E. With the phrasing you are using, you can almost do this. A-D-A, D-A, E-D/C-A, D-A-E. Kind of adds a Joey Bonamassa flare.
you are pretty cool teaching this phrasing lesson. I really love it and I think this is what I've been looking for. So, a big, big thanks to you. You're awesome
just purchased a guitar after not playing for 32 years because I quit smoking and I always wanted to have a guitar again so I treated myself 🙂. Greetings from Germany.
Congratulations on quitting smoking. It isn't the easiest thing to do sometimes. I'm on 10 years without them.
I hope your return to guitar playing has went well 👍🏻. Greetings from the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky USA 🇺🇸
I hope people realize how great this lesson really is, simple things that make a world of difference.
Sure man i like it
Yes, You are absolutely right.
Truly an epiphany lesson
100% this is an AMAZING LESSON
Oh yes 🙂
Low key the greatest guitar lesson on phrasing of all time
What is Low key?
I have had membership on his site several years running, and I think he's one of the most helpful teachers Ive come across
These lessons are hands down the reason I am playing blues for myself and enjoying it. if you really want to invest the time to learn and play, these guys will get you from A to B in the fastest way.

yup most teachers are just after the cha ching...whereas decent teachers actually like seeing their pupils happy and succeed..
Miles Davis was a proponent of copying other people and said that it’s fine because “…. it takes a long time to sound like yourself.”
Fabulous lesson! Your “buffet excess” example is perfect, and your small but elegant solo is the perfect starting point for those of us struggling to get past that point in our playing. Please continue explaining all the many small licks that you throw in between chords, as they are the mortar that holds your elegant playing together.

One of the best courses I’ve purchased. Excellent explanation of where the notes and cords come from. Really enjoy
Your comments are "spot on" Brian regarding focus. I wish I had great teachers like you when I bought my first guitar over thirty years ago. Back then it was private tuition and books but the learning process was slow and frustrating. The Internet has changed all that for the better.
With few days watching your stuff learnd more than in last few months.
Very happy find. Thank you!

Good teacher, keep it going
In my retirement days, I envisioned I'd give some guitar tutorial on-line. But you can't do it any better than guys like Brian here. Not just a great player. A great teacher.
I love this style of Blues playing - this lesson throws out the welcome mat to dive in further.
One of most understandable lessons i ever seen, u are a great teacher, thanks
A great teacher in guitar lessons the best 🎸

Great teacher, Everyone has soul in them. Thanks for helping to get it out of us. 🎸

Très bonnes leçons et les progrès sont assez rapides Merci pour vos cours
GREAT lesson, hoss! Been playin 30+ years, and I got a LOT outta this!
I really want to learn phrasing. This helped quite a lot.
I see too many "teachers" playing fast and fancy but all it takes are a few words and soul
Such a helpful video! Thank you!!🔥
Maybe the best single lesson on phrasing on the entire internet. Thanks! I'd heard that the major pentatonic scale works best over the one chord, and the four and five chords sound best over the minor. But I think you have lots of options once you start noodling around. Good stuff.
Great lesson. You've got a Great way of making the lesson almost In person an direct. Thanks bro. 🎸

This lesson is gold. Thanks for sharing
one of the best blues lessons ever
This is life changing man, thank you
I really enjoy your lessons. Unfortunately, I can't learn a lesson a week but commend you on your willingness to send one out each week.

Also, thanks for reminding me how that II note is soo good on the V chord :) It's magic.
Kevin Musso so true
That's right! Wise words! Blues is a feeling music style!
Agree totally.
@Bill Cook no such thing as too late for the blues..imho
Nice, this was a great blast from the past. It isn't the usual angle to the maj/min approach. I have always enjoyed the BB (box) simplicity. Well done........ I forgot to mention - it is rare to find someone who actually shows you how to "count" your way into a blues line.

The Best tutor on YT..Thanks Brian

i mostly used Am pentatonic scale or A-blues scale. but after hearing this lesson, i learned!. use the MAJOR PENTATONIC!.
That's exactly what David Gillmore does..sings the notes he is playing notably on Wish You Were Here. Great lesson ty
Brian's just, awesome!!!

These lessons are awesome
Out of all the teachers out there, I have to admit I keep coming back to you because you really know how to teach!!!! Keep it up
The best guitar teacher!
That was a great lesson! Thanks. As a teacher of English, I totally understand what you are trying to communicate to people watching this video.

I can not yet do barre chords so,
I appreciate being able to play blues with as few barre chords as possible. Thanks for your lessons!!!!
You might want to try slides and open tunings.
this is cool stuff...brings whole new meaning to style. always knew there are more notes between notes..i am bass player figuring out the other half
You are a great teacher!!!!!!!!!
BB King & You Brian make it look easy. Great Lesson 🙂
Kind of adds a Joey Bonamassa flare.
lry76 im am 2 uploading guitar lessons. You are welcome. th-cam.com/video/BLsWDMXOY5o/w-d-xo.html
you are pretty cool teaching this phrasing lesson. I really love it and I think this is what I've been looking for. So, a big, big thanks to you. You're awesome
You've done it again.. Opened my eyes so I'm able to see the wood amongst the trees..
great lesson!!!!! learned so much already. thank you
