Ok, just to clarify the “cheesy metal” comment from this video. I meant the cheeseball stuff like 80s hair band stuff. Heavy Metal is such a broad category and includes everything from Black Sabbath and Van Halen (which I like), to Winger and Poison, which are totally cheesy. I’m just saying you won’t find that type of shredder metal on this channel.

honestly i'm no pro, but i've noticed one thing in myself, since i've been listening to the blues since 12 yrs and playing since 6 yrs now, i unknowingly copy some licks, which my brother sometimes points out saying "hey i think that sounded like srv or freddie king" i dont care how well you know the scales or certain rhythms when approaching blues, be a good listener, it just adds this whole new level of converting whats in your head to what comes out through your fingers. Be well.

I’m enjoying your content Brian, this is a great video. Between this one and the slow minor blues by yourself video I’m set this weekend for practicing something interesting to me. I’m sounding better when improvising already, I always learn new licks or connect some dots and get closer to demystifying the fretboard when I watch your videos. Something about the way you teach is just right for me to have “ah ha” moments and really soak up some knowledge from you. I feel like I spend more time actually learning how to play and I’m not wasting the little time I have each day running in circles anymore.
Thank you, I’m signing up for a membership at your website tonight. I keep coming back to your videos and realizing they just work for me, plus you sound very much like I want to be able to play, so I find all of your content helpful and enlightening.

Brian I just discovered your site and really like how to teach ... for me what makes this EP420 lesson so good is because you approach how to solo, not from "how many licks can I play in one bar" ... to "look! ... it's about telling a story"... and the blues licks you play are not intimidating, yet they are emotionally very powerful ... as a singer learning to solo on guitar your perspective has "hit home!"... Thank you!

Yeah, as someone who doesn't like metal at all even I found that to be unnecessarily exclusionary comment. I doubt he meant it that way but it's something to consider for the future. I used to be the kind of person to trash other people's music tastes but then I found out nobody likes that guy. That guy never meaningfully adds to the conversation, and most of the time is actively not trying to change his mind and be open to new experiences. Not everyone is like that, but personally I'd do anything I can to not be associated with that negativity.

Y'know, Brian, i learned more about CAGED (& triads) from you than from anyone (even though i understood "re-purposed" chords already, which are the basics of CAGED).
From learning different places to find chords & triads, it has made me a better ad-lib player (improvising).
So now, after less than a year since i developed my calluses to play guitar, i can improvise so much better than i could some 30+ years ago, when i had played for about 10 years (and ppl thought i was good back then).
Of course, then i had that long span where i didn't play at all, followed by nerve impingement, then surgery, then recovery....
But, because it means so much to me, in terms of creativity (and perhaps even my mental health, lol), I LOVE the fact that i can sit and improvise now, like what you're teaching in this video!

Great lesson I am going to use what I learned here tomorrow during my lessen with my teacher. He is going to be glad when I play different phrasing over his a backing track. We have been working on me getting out of the blues scale box then coming back using more of the fretboard. He will be pleased to hear something different I know I am driving him crazy he is just to nice to say so..Thanks
