Yes, I have experienced this, it happens with sectors of social care and many medical professionals too. It's awful, deeply traumatising and absolutely unacceptable!!! But unless society changes, and people are accepted and valued for who they are at all times, life stages and states, we won't see it. The people who work in these areas are in my experience are 99% of the time unsuited to the work. If you lack basic empathy and compassion, you can't and should not work with people enduring very challenging circumstances! If the job stressed them so much that it makes them behave in these ways, again, you are not suited- go off and work somewhere else... Preferably away from other people!
