Yes, I have experienced this, it happens with sectors of social care and many medical professionals too. It's awful, deeply traumatising and absolutely unacceptable!!! But unless society changes, and people are accepted and valued for who they are at all times, life stages and states, we won't see it. The people who work in these areas are in my experience are 99% of the time unsuited to the work. If you lack basic empathy and compassion, you can't and should not work with people enduring very challenging circumstances! If the job stressed them so much that it makes them behave in these ways, again, you are not suited- go off and work somewhere else... Preferably away from other people!

I think it starts with using the right language, as a PBS plan (PBSP) could be called a PS Plan ie Positive Support Plan (PSP). The word ‘behaviour’ is easily misunderstood or misused, and that’s where the power imbalance starts, I feel. A college I visited was good in the sense that they asked people what they wanted their PBSP to be called, and adapted it - as asked. And it should be stated right at the start of a PBSP that the PBSP looks at everyone’s behaviour such as those supporting the person, because although we know that is a fact, it’s rarely ever written. It’s not that applied behavioural analysis is all bad, but a good PSP (rather than PBSP) can be a useful tool for do’s and don’ts re what the person will respond to or not respond to, as far as people know. Really great to have these discussions, and really great to hear about people with Learning Disabilities also being defended. LD doesn’t mean you are less than others, as so often it is like that.

I agree with much of what is said here…I think it’s not a good way to understand people… and based on flawed hypotheses about understanding what a person thinks… heartily sick of these approaches

What Alexis said about "using relationship" resonates. That's particularly bad if there is a betrayal of developing healing trust and instead there is only manipulation or acting. It is not intrinsically rewarding for humans to be on the other end of this. It does not bring the benefits of relationship. It make it more difficult for someone to trust in the future. Being good at social manipulation is highly valued and rewarded in our society - probably in most human societies. Then we have a riot and depose or dispose of the leader. We suck. But we can definitely do better if we have the will to make major changes.

The hospitals and " the system" try to "condition " our kids, they are using positive behaviour approaches which don't work with autistic/ learning disabled people. They are trying to knock the disability out of them and make them "normal" and after years of trying that and realising they can't they then eventually release them if they are lucky and brand the person as being unable to be helped and say " we just need to show them empathy" its unbelievable!!! The person ends up being very damaged by their unbelievable practices!!!

Also, "irresponsible conduct" in particular is dangerously vague and open to abuse. I've heard of people with learning disabilities who have been locked up just for making decisions that others disagree with. It honestly comes across as if this wording is written to make services' lives easier by making them not have to take the person into account, not to respect the rights of and protect people with disabilities.

Great video. I think the problem is individualism, and it's so deeply ingrained in our culture, I’m not sure a solution exists. I’ve noticed when someone with lived experience is platformed, it’s usually only once they’ve achieved something personally. And they’re only presented as an example to those of us at the bottom to learn from. It’s survivor bias, and it’ll only change once people come to accept that the world is not an equal playing field, and we are not individually responsible for our difficulties. If you succeed, it's not because you're wiser, harder-working, or more talented than anyone else. And if you fail, it's not because you're lazy, stupid or crazy. So I think the issue is a false set of beliefs, instilled within us from birth, that must be challenged before anything can even begin change. But then those of us who best understand the problem, are also least likely to be heard by the exact people we’d need to reach.

This is resonating. so much with this whole situation is broken. when we've complained about the abuse and control, we've been peonalised. home visits are suspended. he's being drug tested after unsupervised leave with me on the hosp grounds...section 17 leave suspended... punishment - even for complaining.

Great to see you all and a very important topic.. there def needs more investigation into the power of profs and the use of psychological restraint it’s almost like the ‘normal’ isn’t it? Staffing need educating on this as I’m sure they have no training and almost say and do without knowing the effect it has on the individual

My Autistic 12 year old has been locked up in a PICU for nearly a year. They have him on different medications and regularly have to restrain him and put him in an isolation room because of his heightened behaviour. He has past trauma from being separated from me and passed around 8 different unsuitable placements one of which he was abused in by untrained agency staff workers who he has now sadly developed attitudes towards which are deemed offensive. He is punished for verbal abuse in the PICU and threatened with police. He is over stimulated and distressed on a daily basis and the Local Authority continue to drag their heels and tell me they can't find a placement elsewhere for him. This whole ordeal has been going on for three years and has traumatised me and my son beyond belief. He's now about to have his 13th birthday locked up in a PICU and followed around all day by agency staff, when he should be at home celebrating surrounded by his loved ones. There is still no end in sight to this nightmare. I desperately want my son home with support in place, this is also my son's biggest wish in the world. I will continue to dedicate every day of my life to fighting for my son's quality of life, but I feel like I am up against a broken system and authorities who makes it impossible. I feel like these people simply do not care, and continue to gloss over the main issues and simple solutions time and time again. I am heartbroken and at my wit's end.

She desperately wants to come home and she remains imprisoned. She is currently aged 14 and will be 15 in June. There is absolutely not plans for her future.
