I wet mine down & let the sun bleach it out over a weeks time….each morning I would thoroughly hose it down inside & out & then let the sun do the rest! Worked like a charm…brought it back to brand new!

I know this is nearly a year old video. But I figured I’d share the answer for making your tent look new again. 15% bleach solution is all it takes. Worked for a custom tent manufacturer and rental company years ago. That’s how we kept the tents looking new. You’re right that bleaching does harm the fabric. But it’s not as though you need to bleach it frequently. You only need to do it once to remove the mold. Then research the weather treatment products that currently are used by tent manufacturers and professional cleaners. Get yourself some of that product and it’ll go a long ways in preventing mold in the future. You can either live with the moldy look or you can bleach it. Those really are your only options. Just make sure you rinse well after bleaching if you choose to do it.
It seems you’re sick of having a moldy tent. So what do you have to lose by bleaching it?
Good luck. You made an excellent video. And sharing your experience is a warning to others who may consider loaning out their cavas tents.

Don’t EVER let ANYONE use your stuff! No one will take care of it and you will be left with junk. You should sell them the tent and buy yourself a new one.You shouldn’t have to own something you are not happy with because of someone’s carelessness. I’m sorry your tent is in the shape it’s in.

For tent stakes that are super durable I use 3/8 or 1/2 inch diameter rebar. You can buy it in uncut rods from home building centers. It's also sold in pre-cut stakes in some outdoor/camping stores.

I appreciate you sharing your misfortune with us, as a new canvas tent owner this is good information demonstrating what can happen if you don't follow manufactures recommendations about storing your tent. Apparently your friend didn't know the difference between dry and damp.

just a small piece of info, Hydrogen Peroxide kills mold and it doesn't have to be full strength. You can also use it to kill black mold that you may get in a home. and you can buy it in gallon jugs. As far as your tent stake issue go to your local welding shop and have them cut you some stakes out of 3/8" cold rolled steel and have them bend over on one end so you have a J Hook and then sharpen the other end. You'll have a set of stakes that will outlast your tents.

This is sad and painful to watch. I didn't know it gets mold that easily as I always take good care of mine. I leave it loosely unpacked in the garage if I don't have time to dry it off immediately after getting home, and keep a small fan running at it helps too.
Agreed someone owes you a new tent.

Life lesson learned. I never borrow out any of my gear especially camping gear it almost always comes back damaged. Cheaper in the long run to have friends rent from an outfitter don't worry about offending them you just want your gear to be used when you're with them. And if they can't "afford" an outfitter thet tells you a lot right there.

Yeah that was a huge mistake letting someone borrow it because they don't care about your stuff, that's just people's nature of action when something doesn't belong to them they assumed that it's your problem if it breaks, sad to say. That is why I do not let anyone borrow anything from me! ;)

I have a canvas tipi from tentipi and their hardware is really durable. If you were to still be interested in new stakes but hey, You should tie dye that thing! Thanks for the video I'm actually in the same boat as you. It doesn't feel very nice to be surrounded by dirty fabric but there is a solution and you will find it! "Out!" White Bright is like bleach but less abrasive to fabric. I have a tie dye company and vend so I am kind of partial to doing a reverse dye on that and it will be better than before. Have a nice summer!

If you still have the tent, try this. Use a carpet shampoo machine. I have also used a power washer to clean dirty area rugs that I have taken camping. Last suggestion would be to try a steam cleaner. Many auto mechanics have steam cleaners. Best of luck.

I know this is a little late, but try dyeing some Native American designs on it in rustic brown, red and yellow dyes. You may be amazed, the blotchy canvas from the inside looks to me a little like your looking at thin deer hide, you could create a unique design. Get your hands on some powder paints that you can make a paste out of to easily control and finger paint the canvas. You may need to experiment and try mixing the powder with an oil base solvent as the waterproofing may not allow a water base mixture to absorb.
After your washing, you may have to re-apply waterproofing anyway.
Never give up! There is lemonade to be made!

3m makes a really good mold remover for canvas. You can also spray it with 303 water repellent. Just saying.

2 gallon spray jug 20 percent clorox 80 percent water spray it inside an out leave it to up to dry an repeat till it's gone. An than get the 303 water repell that is used on these tents from beginning.

New subscriber! Thanks for your helpful tip Jodi. I just bought a bell tent and will definitely be careful who I lend it to. I’ve also made the mistake of lending out my equipment to friends n family only to find out later pieces either missing or broken 😡 Now I check upon return and notify borrowers to look for missing pieces or compensate me.

Best tent stakes are 16” Ground Rebar Stakes. Pack of 8 at Amazon is currently $24.98. I have the worst land and suffer strong winds (45 mph spring and fall) but these don't care. Keeps an elevated 24 x 12 billboard tarp totally in place. Does require a dead-fall hammer if you are on stony land (but the nice thing is you can pound the hell out of these with no concerns). Try to get the ones where the tip is cut at an angle but I use both with little issue.

  • @cfeller2
    @cfeller2 ปีที่แล้ว

Best winter frozen ground stakes are 8-12 inch lag screws. Just use an impact driver to screw them in. This will go through frozen icy ground like a charm. They work great in the summer too when you have to pitch in dry hard ground.

Thanks for the video, a great heads up. First off, it is depressing when you spend good money on something you want and this happens. I have a policy of not lending my stuff to others for a number of reasons. Sometimes you don't even get it back. At any rate, sorry this happened to you and it is probably something that I might not of considered.

I agree with the last commenter ... I wouldn't fool around with mold it's nasty and breathing it into your lungs just isn't a good Idea.. in my opinion anyway...:) I just bought or rather I should say ordered the White Duck Regatta 13' bell tent... and the Winnerwell Double View Medium tent stove to pair with it. from all of the videos and reviews it's seems to be one awesome tent and the price is very affordable, for what you get.. They also have the best customer service, they will call you back ask any questions they are very helpful....
I'm very new to this journey, trying to figure out a good place to be able to set up and hang for a while.. I'm in Nevada City CA....Colorado sounds like a good maybe.. not sure yet.. anyway.. ty so much for sharing your story... oh and your pretty cute also :)

We always put a ridge line rope and tarp over our family tent. It keeps organics like pollen from getting on it and molding. Also because it always rains while at camp in central U.P.

7:10 get solid round steel stakes. The big ones (1/4" or more in diameter). Rebar stakes a good fairly cheap choice. Good rule of thumb is if it looks chinsy it probably is.

    1st rule.of expensive items.
Never ever let people borrow what you can't afford to replace.
I made the mistake of letting friends borrow a new military cook set. It was brand new and came back all messed up, and dented. Didn't cost much back then, but its the point they destroyed what I bought!
Friends will not replace $600 tents.
Military surplus tent stakes . Very heavy duty. 8:53

  • @RJ-0301

I let some "friends borrow a very large brand new tent.
They took it camping for a drunkfest and returned the tent in horrible condition.
Broken zippers, torn screens and tears where they hit it with metal hammers while driving the stakes.
They didn't even put back into the storage bag!
I threw it away! No offer of reimbursement either.
    Lesson learned.

If you have any friends that know how to Weld they can actually turn she'll return the rebar still rebar into tent stakes by simply bending one end To hold down the rope and taper up the end that goes into the ground into a point
Those make the best tent pegs and they could be as long as you want them to

Hey Mate, Sorry to see that your “Friend” did this to you. With friends like that who needs enemies hey.
I’m hoping your friend sees all these comments, no excuses & you are owed a new tent.
I’m not going to add cleaning advice there has been heaps of that in the comments but I urge you to take more care when working near mould. Mould can make you seriously ill & you should be wearing the appropriate respirator when cleaning like that & I would go as far as suggesting protective clothing and hair and eye protection.
Mould spores could end up in your hair then on your pillow then into your bed. It’s not a joke if you get sick with it & yes some people have become sick with illness and passed away all due to mould.
If it were me, as costly as that is, I’d burn it snd start again, your health is far too important.
Again, I’m sorry this has happened to you. I hope something special comes your way in the not so distant future.
