When I first started shipping things on eBay I was that person who always paid at the post office, because of that there were a lot of times at the very beginning where I lost money. Lindey is right everyone, printing your own labels saves tons of money! Another thing I was doing was only shipping flat rate and that got pretty costly too. While it can save money for the smaller heavier things, sometimes it cost more so it's really important to check your weight and length and compare prices between flat rate and first class/priority/other shipping providers. Also having all sorts of packaging helps a lot too! There were so many items I shipped in the flat rate envelopes that could have easily went in smaller non flat rates and I could have saved myself $4+ just by having smaller packaging that wasn't flat rate. What really changed my world were polymailers, once I started shipping with those shipping cost really dropped since they are so light! Obviously you can't ship everything in them but I found that clothes, plush, backpacks, just anything that can be thrown around are great in them! I also LOVE the scotch flex and seal shipping roll, there have been times I didn't want to put an item in a polymailers but it was too small to put in a box so using the scotch flex and seal can make a world of difference! Shipping is literally the most costly part of selling items online, it can make or break a sale if you're not smart about it.
Are you saying you can package an item in the Scotch Flex & Seal, weigh it, figure out shipping, print a label, then ship it in this packaging method? Without a box? I ask because I am confused.
This was really thorough & so helpful to me. About 15 yrs ago I was a huge Enay seller and sold a lot of stuff but today it’s like night & day & everything is COMPLETELY different and I don’t have a clue what’s going on. I’m a total beginner now and know nothing. I will also look at your other videos since I know you’ll explain it so I can understand it. Many thanks.

Lindey, I had so many questions before this video about shipping. After watching, pausing many many times to take notes I finally understand. I have watched so many other videos about shipping from others and still confused. You are amazing. Thank you so much.
me too. the less FEES and shipping a person feels they are paying, the better chance they buy from you vs someone else. many times I ship free but sometimes I do say i will pay half if not free. I never change full shipping on that either. But i have to take alittle less profile but make it up in sale and volume and or return customer. After all, we all look for that, and so does customers.
Thank you Lindey, that was a superior tutorial on shipping. It was so good that I added it to my watch again business videos. You covered so much for us new business people that will help us be better at shipping. Great tips
I will have to say that this was the most useful video for shipping on ebay that I have seen. Whenever I get videos like this, I try to use their affiliate link to purchase a product if needed. It does not cost you any more if you went direct. Thanks Lindey
You are so awesome! You are so clear, and I understand so much easier when you just talk like you would if we were standing around talking. I wish you could do that with all EBays knowledge bank! Assuming is the problem, absolutely right. I can only be mad at myself if it's done wrong. Also, EBays settings make it easy to accidentally hit free shipping, as well as the counter offer setting set as default; if you don't unclick it, you get flooded with lowball offers. I appreciate ya!
Another good reason to choose Free Shipping is that USPS insures your Priority package up to $100 for free. So if you sell an item for $100 and free shipping you're insured for $100. If you sell that same item for $75 and $25 shipping you're only insured for $75.
Does that mean you can just tell USPS that the item is worth $100 so you can get the free insurance or do you have to prove to them what you're sending is worth $100?
You're also more likely to sell the item if it was free shipping. I myself will rarely buy an item that has shipping costs unless it is a pretty low shipping cost.
I loved this vidoe so much that I watched it twice! I'm starting a new business and I have the scotch flex tape on my order! You're so awesome for this!! Thank you so much!
Great video Lindey! Thank you!! The US Postal Service used to have a slogan to help with ensuring your package is packed to avoid breakage of the contents, which is "If it shakes, it breaks!"

Not ever issue with you... As a buyer I have been charged for several miscalculations on shipping. They all had PayPal shipping labels. None of postage due have been over $4. I was somewhat agitated every time since I had paid for requested shipping costs. I have never left negative feedback however let seller know so they can grow. Want to clarify you were not one of those sellers. Thank you for all your hot tips. Shipping is my biggest fear of becoming an EBay seller. Have a stellar week.
A small flat rate box is 50 cents more than a flat rate envelope, but the small flat rate box fits easily inside the flat rate envelope. 50 cents may not seem like a lot, but when you mail out over 500 items a year it adds up. Another tip is that the small flat rate box is very sturdy and it's hard to find a good sturdy small box these days. A lot of times you're only going to need to mail it First Class and not Priority which can save you 2-3 dollars. When I first started I was putting the small flat rate box in a 10x13 manilla envelope and paying First Class as long as it remained 1 pound or less... but the corners of the box started to poke through the envelope and I was getting charged the Priority rate once they saw this. So now I put the flat rate box in a flat rate envelope and then put that in a 10x13 envelope. That way there are no sharp corners and I've never had to pay Priority rates again going on 4 years now. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for this detailed information on EBay shipping. I’ve only been selling for a few months. Yes I have made some of these mistakes for exactly the reason you have addressed “assuming”. So funny Lindey!! And so very informative. I'm comfortable with shipping, but Im'ma watch this again and again, if not for the valuable info and your way of explaining, the sped up voice I can't quit giggling at :)
Great tips! I have a cheap ($10ish) kitchen scale that goes up to 8lbs and that's worked great for me so far! I've totally done the "yeah it'll fit" thing a time or two lol I love the free shipping supplies from USPS! lol I have to find the item upstairs (ebay room) then run downstairs (office) to print the shipping label and get the item ready to ship, then back upstairs to get it out to the mailbox. I'm also still taping the label to the package because I only have about 5 - 8 packages going out a week. I'm waiting until sales come up more to reward myself with a good label printer.
You can use sticky labels with your regular printer. I figure it's worth the cost of the label to save on the tape and the process of taking down regular paper. I'm new and just starting.
@@AskChevelle True. I don't know why I hadn't thought of buying the 8.5x11 sheets with two labels.. I have an old printer and like Lindy said, planning to use it until it dies haha it doesn't work well with 4x6 labels, so I've just been using paper. But yes, I'll buy some labels :)
USPS has 2 sizes of customs form envelopes that you can put your paper printed label in and stick to your package. I asked the Post Master if it is ok to use for domestic shipping, after checked codes, I was told I could use them to ship any USPS package. They are free on USPS website, just like Priority supplies.
Excellent video with sound advice I wish I had known this years ago. I've made every known mistake you can make on eBay shipping but managed only do it once because that's a big ouch. you get excited about selling something then you're screwed up the shipping and wella you have no profit and you're in the red. Heed These warnings know what you're going to ship in prior to listing that item it will save you a lot of angst. Thanks Lindey!
You have taught me and clarified much.. but you are seriously intense. Thank you. But perhaps another video on how focused one needs to be? I am just looking to sell a few things I have laying around, got screwed on shipping in the past. You answered my questions. Thanks. But.. intense!
A little late but stumbled upon your videos! Great info! I’m actually surprised you don’t use regional b boxes. I shipped a whopping 7 lbs(!!) of clothing to my sister in the next state over for the regional rate b of only $8.64. (I did the click-n-ship online so I figured it had to be accurate lol!). I stuffed that box so full/ kinda overflowing. But a large flat rate is over $20 now...No way! Anyways great videos, thank you!:)
Funny. How many times have I assumed something would fit into a Padded Priority Flat Rate. LOL! Thankful for Pirate Ship as they've saved me a few times. Thanks Lindey
I've made a big "boo boo" when shipping my orders. I accidentally selected "USPS Priority Express Mail" instead of "USPS Priority Mail", about a $25.00 mistake. Since then I always double check the prices before printing the labels.
i did that! mine was just small difference of about a buck, but learned real fast. They need to Allow an easy shipping choice sellers can change IF they are the ones paying. I dont get why they did this, this way IF seller is paying for it.
Ouch! I have an Etsy shop where I make one of a kind jewelry and I had someone purchase something from Spain and I live in the United States the product was only $15 and I had $499 shipping but the shipping ended up costing me almost as much as the product 🤨😩
@@ameliacatlover1985 usa has the highest shipping and cost compared to many countries, and gov wonders why we can't seem to bring back mfg...... it is crazy shipping like that sometimes... you can cancel the order and cancel shipping if paid and return money from order, along with get refund on shipping if unused on ebay... I did not have much luck with esty myself. found where they pretty bias allowing favorites to sell whatever, and not others. plus they do not help with shipping rate discounts. that was a biggie for me too.
I pretty much exclusively use the Scotch shipping roll since seeing your first video on it. Not having to keep multiple different sizes and types of bags/boxes is worth any extra money i may be spending on the roll. I haven't had to mess with shipping tape in months its been great!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! Shipping is a B*#%!, and has been eating so much of my profits. I absolutely hate it. Thanks for the great information. Absolutely relevant and very helpful.

Sheri Willingham Just make sure that you choose the correct settings on your printer. It will tell you in your printer roll box. For my DYMOLabelwriter 4 XL, I have to pick 1744907 - 4 X 6
I am so careful with my shipping and I slipped up one time because the address was pretty close to me and the product was received damaged I got the notification today so this video is literally perfect timing...
Yes I've sold for products online and I basically in the end paid these people to take my products and ship it to them all in a little more. Lesson learned
I really love your videos! I just started the eBay platform, sales are a little slow for me. But I’m going to stay motivated that it will pick up :) thank you for always the great advice :)
Never forget region A and B boxes for cheaper shipping. Both A and B come in 2 styles flat and cube. Also if you open a UPS account you can order the sticky labels a pack of 50 free each month or thermal rolls if thats what you use.
If i m shipping a long & bulky item( sump pump), can i wrap that item in the Scotch flex sealed shipping paper without having to box it and do i put my shipping label attached to the flex & seal?
Do you suggest only using first class or priority? I wonder when usps ground is a good idea to use? Love your videos. So straight forward and informative 😊
Sharon Brown You have to use USPS Ground shipping when sending anything that might be flammable, such as perfume etc. It’s illegal not to due to the hazard.
I love the curtain rod for your tapes!! What a great way to improvise and be stylin' at the same time!! Love your videos. It's helping me as a new seller. Thanks Lindey!
I found out the hard way about not using the calculated shipping. I used a flat rate based on a couple of previous sales (of cast iron). So I couldn’t print the label from eBay and just took the item to the post office. Because of the weight, box size and destination, I paid more in shipping than the total sale (final auction price plus buyer shipping). I essentially paid a couple of bucks to send someone my item! Lesson learned. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Calculated shipping! Your great content and I love your enthusiasm considering shipping is not all that interesting you kept my attention the whole time. Also 14 years? What were you 12 when you started 😊
I use a kitchen scale because I already had one, should I get a postage scale? I just sell sports cards 99% of the time. I use bubble envelopes size 7.5" x 4.8" x .50". One thig I have noticed is any time I use custom shipping USPS first-class, a default comes up auto 8" x 5" x 1". when I change to actual size of envelope the price drops. I assume inside of tier weights, 4oz, 8oz, 12oz, 16oz, the price stays the same? I know size changes it by a few pennies. I could actually put thickness of .25' easily and it would drop more. Your take on this. Thanks Penny pincher 😊
You should because usually kitchen scales are not as accurate to weight mail and some cannot even weight anything as low as an ounce. I don't know if yours is that precise and accurate enough for that. And yes, always change dimensions if you can from the default.
Awesome Video Lindy! Made most of these shipping mistakes myself & have learned from them. Wish In had seen this a couple of years ago! Kevin-Nw-Hills-Picker...
Also, the dimensions make a difference for the rate, especially if you ship large items. Make sure that you enter the correct shipping box dimension so you ensure that you are charged the correct rate.
@@budgetedgoods I'm new so don't quote me but I don't believe that dimensions matter for flat rate packages. I do however always enter accurate dimension info.

Heed These warnings know what you're going to ship in prior to listing that item it will save you a lot of angst.
Thanks Lindey!
Great Tips! Love the thumbnail 👍
You have taught me and clarified much.. but you are seriously intense. Thank you. But perhaps another video on how focused one needs to be? I am just looking to sell a few things I have laying around, got screwed on shipping in the past. You answered my questions. Thanks. But.. intense!
Appreciate your help in growing my knowledge. Thanks
Thanks for telling it in a way that I can understand. And yes, like the other lady, I/we get excited when you put up a video👍😋
❤️❤️❤️
Great video. 👍. Took lots of notes. 😊. Extremely helpful.
Not just in the US, cheaper to buy shipping labels online here with Aus Post in Australia too.
Hi, this was very helpful. Do you have a video that goes through putting in all the required shipping boxes on the listing? Thank you!
Thank you very much. You took me to school.
Lindey is the Best!!
You rock! 😃
@@LindeyGlenn Thank you!😊
I'll give her top 10 status lol :-) LOVE YOU LINDEY
This video was so helpful and informative. Thank you!
I feel so cool that is the same scale I use. Sometimes I need to zero it out with box on it so I can see the numbers.
So many of my questions answered! Thank you for the great information!
really good tips! Thank you
I pretty much exclusively use the Scotch shipping roll since seeing your first video on it. Not having to keep multiple different sizes and types of bags/boxes is worth any extra money i may be spending on the roll. I haven't had to mess with shipping tape in months its been great!
It’s such a crazy cool shipping product right?!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! Shipping is a B*#%!, and has been eating so much of my profits. I absolutely hate it. Thanks for the great information. Absolutely relevant and very helpful.
Reviewing so many of your important videos today as I prepare to kick off on Wednesday. However, I'm curious- is there any objection to using newspaper as filler? I ask because I have it at no cost to me, bundles and bundles of it. TIA!
I love my thermal printer! Lindey, there are TH-cam videos on how to set it up and use it, so don’t be nervous about new technology. Love your videos!
This is what i have but need to find the video on how to set up labels for printing my ebay labels. Do you recommend one? I have the dymo label writer turbo 450.
Sheri Willingham I have the DYMO LabelWriter 4XL. When I googled it, the DYMO video for my model popped up right away.
Sheri Willingham Just make sure that you choose the correct settings on your printer. It will tell you in your printer roll box. For my DYMOLabelwriter 4 XL, I have to pick 1744907 - 4 X 6
Thinking about trying to teach my daughter about buying and selling.
never too old or young to learn new things. Is a good thing for sure.
I am so careful with my shipping and I slipped up one time because the address was pretty close to me and the product was received damaged I got the notification today so this video is literally perfect timing...
You should show the Scotch sealing ability and try pulling it apart and demonstrate how good it is. They are a sponsor of yours.
Yes I've sold for products online and I basically in the end paid these people to take my products and ship it to them all in a little more. Lesson learned
Excellent Advice....Thank you
The voice change edit scared the heck out of me!! Lol too funny
😂
Yeah- thought I was getting a high fever there for a second 😆😆
Wow, Thank you Lindey, these tips are very helpful!
I really love your videos! I just started the eBay platform, sales are a little slow for me. But I’m going to stay motivated that it will pick up :) thank you for always the great advice :)
Great Content, I'm loving your information
Great video appreciate all the information you provided.
Never forget region A and B boxes for cheaper shipping. Both A and B come in 2 styles flat and cube. Also if you open a UPS account you can order the sticky labels a pack of 50 free each month or thermal rolls if thats what you use.
What are region A and B boxes? And does it cost money to open a UPS account - if so how much is it and is it a monthly or yearly fee?

Lindey is the best professor ☺️
I learned a lot from a Beautiful Ebay seller!
Thanks Lindey!!
Calculated shipping! Your great content and I love your enthusiasm considering shipping is not all that interesting you kept my attention the whole time. Also 14 years? What were you 12 when you started 😊
Thanks for your help.
Great video! Learned so much. Thank you!!
Also, the dimensions make a difference for the rate, especially if you ship large items. Make sure that you enter the correct shipping box dimension so you ensure that you are charged the correct rate.
Thank you! I was just going to ask about that... The flat rate padded envelope is 12.5 x 9.5 but eBay has it as 7x4x4 do I change that???
@@budgetedgoods I'm new so don't quote me but I don't believe that dimensions matter for flat rate packages. I do however always enter accurate dimension info.
@@budgetedgoods Doesn't matter with flat rate envelope. Go with the Ebay pricing.
Hi! How do you bundle shipping if a customer buys more than one item from you!? I had a client buy two heavy items from me and paid shipping for only one. I do not offer free shipping!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I learn so much from you!
Yeah I use a Wal-Mart bought kitchen scale.
Excellent video. Very informative.
