The BRM P83 : Duraluminium monocoque mated to a mid mounted, three litre, naturally aspirated, 16 cylinder engine in a compact H layout, developing 420 brake horse power at 10,500 revolutions per minute. With its manual six speed gearbox the P83 can reach speeds close to 200 miles per hour and tips the scales at a mere 1480lbs...
...and I even like the colour.

Of course, in the real world the Lotus 49 was one of the greatest F1 cars of all time. Launched in '67 but lost out due to reliability issues, won the Championship in '68 and was still used in early races (incl. Monaco win ) in 1970 before Lotus switched to the 72 Model, winning the Championship in '70 and '72. But for me the Lotus 49 is still the greatest F1 car of all time. By 1970, everyone except Ferrari used the same Cosworth V8 engine and copied the design.

The Lotus 49 was extremely unreliable throughout the 4 years it was used by the Lotus F1 team. Reliability was even more apalling when Lotus introduced the B version in 1968 and it therefore made the championship a lot more exciting since Hulme and Stewart caught up and made it a close 3 way tie to the final race of the season. Graham Hill did an exceptional job that year to keep Lotus together after Jim Clark's death.

The best for me is the Brabham BT24. It is very light, very agile, stable, it handles very well and the lack of engine power can balance itself if in the driven sections you are precise in the lines and fast enough to accumulate tenths of a second to "spend" then on the straights. Of course, on tracks like Monza and Spa you suffer enough but in general this is the car I frequently choose to play single races and also the world championships.
Instead I find the Honda RA300 absurd: very heavy, undriveable, with a huge basic understeer that even by revolutionizing the set-up it cannot improve. The only "value" is the engine, but even there the recovery is lacking, just better than the BRM one.

I love the BT24 the most as well! I would also add the noise as a big bonus; it sounds wonderful! One weakness of the Honda that I rarely see mentioned is the complete lack of low end torque. The Repco engine revs the least and seems one of the lost torquey ones as well.

I steered clear of the Lotus because EVERYONE had one it seemed online. I Like Honda best. Ferrari was nice too.
On high realism which I only play, the Eagle seemed to always pop it's motor. although I defiantly liked the Eagle, just unreliable therefor, I never used it.

anime with Gigi Brabham won World Championships on the back of it’s reliability.Don’t know why the sim modelled it differently.

Back in my GPL years, the BT24 was the car of my choice. Very easy to drive with enough power to short shift the car if necesary

True, I found myself being faster with the Brabham as well.

I like the lotus the most. It is verry difficult to set the car up properly, but when you do it is a gem to drive, it keeps you on edge and is the overall quickest of the bunch. Although I do have to admit that I haven't set up any other cars than the Lotus, B.R.M. and the Honda and of that bunch the Lotus is the lightest and I moslty drive on the Nordschleife...

If the engine was modeled to be more reliable...the Eagle. Weslake was a genius. In point of fact, I usually drive Lotus.

I might be wrong but I recall in the original (un-modded) game the BRM has the best brakes and really good acceleration, so if not the slowest (or second slowest) car overall, it was really hard to pass all-else equal.

Yes, ErikGPL has a video mentioning that, I think it was due to a weight bias of 64%. Not bad for such a log of a car.

@@GrandPrixYannick Thanks for the info! I miss playing these games but due to time constraints and the level of addictiveness I avoid ever getting back into them. Therefore I vicariously get my Sim Racing fix by watching your guys' videos. Thanks very much for posting them!
