I like the callback to panzer korps 1’s first Barbarossa mission where in turn 1 all the Soviets were completely unprepared, with red ammo and you had to kill all the planes possible before they resupplied with fuel a few turns in and you got swamped in I16s
You're right! I last played Barbarossa in PzC1 about 5 years ago, didn't even cross my mind. 😂 But it's a nice touch in Raseiniai, and first time around, all those enemy planes coming out of nowhere was a very nasty surprise!
I think your configuration for Rudel is just about the optimal. - Double Attack vs Double Move is a complete no-brainer IMO. If you're that starved for air recon, bring a freakin' 1 core slot Fieseler instead of multi-jobbing with Rudels tac. - Aggressive counterattack ? Great, he hits first if he gets bounced by a fighter. That's only ever gonna make any real difference if you end up putting Rudel into a fighter-bomber instead of a full-blown tactical bomber. Could be a nice trick, but Lightning Attack means he can blitz key enemy units even while they're under an AA umbrella, and that can do some potentially amazing things. - Ignores Entrenchment also helps with that - nuking dug-in key units should open all kinds of possibilities. And erasing fortified artillery positions is never not a good ability to have. Tank killer... eh, seems kinda overkill to be honest. Like, a high-vet double-attack tactical bomber is going to outright wipe most tank units already and I doubt it's gonna make much of a difference in practice that you can "only" nuke like three quarters of that IS-2 instead of outright deleting it from existence.
Tank killer might be useful if you haven't got any tank killer heroes (I've got three, I think)! But I like and agree with your analysis, Rudel indeed is the tool you need to nuke key enemy units, and he's absolutely required for handling difficult situations during Barbarossa.
I know you say Zagreb is easy, but as someone who plays with "Inefficient Supply" on always, it was probably the one mission I had to restart the most so far. All the recons and tanks ran out of fuel. The artillery ran out of ammo and fuel. Infantry in trucks had to ditch their transports to not get killed by cavalry charges forcing retreats... like what happened to the mechanized forces. It's definitely informed my equipment choices for Barbarossa.
@@Hexaboo Is inefficient supply nasty? I just think of it as "the game". 90% of the time it makes no impact on my planning. It's just that when the 10% hits, it hits hard. On Zagreb, I now know that I should replace all trucks with horse carts in permanent bad weather missions. Also, your advice has been extremely helpful. Sometimes it's after-the-fact (Zagreb) but other times it's needed beforehand (Operation Mercury; that mission is tricky.)
I was about to ask how you get around in that Char 2c with only three moves, but forgot you use the trait Master Of Blitzkrieg, giving you one extra move point. Thanks for providing short detailed walk-throughs with your dry English humour,I love it and keep your videos as reference points in one of my playlist. You helped me get through some sticky times, especially as I refuse to utilize captured equipment and have the same core army since the Spanish campaign.I own this DLC,but haven't even opened it yet,as I'm up to Pindus in AO 1940.But thanks to you and a few others,I'll be well prepared when I get there. It's amazing this game how it evolved from Panzer General 2 in the late 90's to this.
Hey, thanks for finding a use for my videos :) And ironically, even with Master of Blitzkrieg, I've never seriously used Char 2C in 1941. It's just too slow! (Though it might be rather hard to succeed without any captured equipment in later Soviet missions!)
@@Hexaboo No,my pleasure, you take the time to do these videos,I can take the time to show my appreciation. And you did it again, tipped me off,OK,when I hit AO 1941,I'll begrudgingly accept some captured equipment, like tanks.I'm still running a panzer 1b,it's four point something stars, three heroes and acts as my stealth assassin behind enemy lines taking out artillery and anti-air in one shot. But the rest are all updated,or gifted.Be watching with interest and explore some other games you cover that I don't own yet.Kind regards.
I was thinking to myself "ok don't buy the DLC before Hexaboo makes a video about it" and what the fuck you already deliver. Here goes my week-end I guess. Thanks for the opinion, the details and the jokes, sir.
I'm happy to have ruined your weekend this way! 😂 I'm currently playing the rest of the DLC, and the next part is coming next week (next weekend most likely)!
Thanks to the new Paradrop mechanic operation Mercury is extremely hard and nearly impossible to complete to 100%. Most of the Fliegerkorps XI dies already in the air or land so weak that the allied forces have zero problems killing them.
@@Hexaboo yeah. with the patch 1.02.00 which came out the same day as 1942 air transporters, even paras can only drop if they still have all their movement points or if they are above an enemy or friendly airfield. that makes it impossible for the german Ai to drop their paras effectively.
For Operation Mercury you actually can get your paratroopers some support. The small AA guns, 3.7cm PaK and most importantly the 7.5cm artillery can be airlifted! You can only land them on an airfield but that shouldn´t be a problem to secure. What´s a bit annoying though is that they can´t bring their transport with them...BUT you can upgrade them in a supply hex to give them a random halftrack they somehow found on Crete. IN FACT you can get tanks this way on Crete because anti-tank guns can be upgraded into tanks and recons for some reason...yeah. Feels more like an exploit, though. I disagree with your choice of landing zone, the exit of the small peninsula is covered by infantry that you have to fight through and has almost no cover, while the hills to the southsouthwest of it are completly uncovered and its much easier to avoid the british ships there. I landed all my guys there, took the airfield on the coast, brought in 2 artillery pieces and gave them transports. I never used the 7.5cm before this mission but oh boy they make taking that victory hex so much easier. That said, I failed to take Rethimnon in time. Reinforcing the AI landing is clearly needed to finish in a timely manner but given that right now paratroopers can´t move and drop on the same turn and you can´t provide fighter cover in that area they just get blown out of the sky. I really don´t understand why they changed that about paratroopers, wtf? :S
Nice catch on the light artillery, that might be helpful elsewhere! :) TBH, I don't remember anymore exactly why I went for the peninsula instead of the hills (which look like a good option), perhaps because of some of the mobile units that wait for you to show up and counterattack there! And as far as I know, the paratrooper nerf is only temporary. :)

I didn't get the notification for some reason, i'm guessing battle of Bryansk will be the third video (everything up to that has been really easy but that mission just feels really hard).
Nvm, managed to do Bryansk, just head on assault, ignoring secondary objectives (didnt deploy in the north but had to send units back/keep garrisons as soviets attack my taken hexes from there). Easily the hardest mission since Epsom.
Heh, should I become one of the youtubers who constantly ask their audience to 'press that notification button'? 😂 I haven't reached Bryansk yet, the video with it is coming next week, and I'll get to playing the mission this weekend! Congrats on finishing it, and thanks for the warning :)

Well, you're just a DLC away from having that wish granted. 😉 Also, I'm doing a PzC2 stream on Slitherine's Twich channel (www.twitch.tv/slitherinegroup) next Tuesday, and there will be pink tractors there, I promise. :)
